Web 2.0 Gets Political
Posted by Pixelhead
Following a TopBlog link from the post Why Social Media May Not Be All It’s Cracked Up To Be, I learned about the banning of Lee Oden’s Toprankblog.com from Digg. Apparently, several of his posts had been added by others, and were in no way spammy, but the powers that be at DIGG or rather “certain digg community members” decided they don’t like anything to do with SEO, SEM, or online marketing in general. So these people, violated their own philosophy and reported Toprankdblog as being spam. To appease these reverse spammers, Digg banned the Toprankblog address. So it seems the DIGG system has been manipulated and spammed by its own members. Does this signal the downfall of DIGG or will it change to overcome this shortcoming?
As I was reading the post, I was thinking to myself that this leaves an openning in the social media. Certainly if Lee wanted to he could rally his followers to stop using DIGG(so it seems many have without his asking) but Lee,still seems very optimistic and not totally negative about Digg which is shown by his comment he made in reply to another comment
“Apparently I’ve been a bit too optimistic. There are so many good things happening with Digg, it’s a sad reminder that despite the pretty wrapper, some things are rotten inside.” Love the wrapper analogy Lee.
