Top Commentators, Twitter and other Blog Changes

Posted by Pixelhead

Just a short little post about some site updates.

I got the top commentator widget to work. After reading Jonathan from SmartWealthyRich.com post about his updates I was inspired to add it as well. I had tried to add it a similar widget before, but was unsuccessful. The advice from PersonalFinanceAdvice.com, were I downloaded the program, was very helpful.

I would also like to do a weekly post that gives links to some groovy posts of top commentators, much like David of Pureblogging.com does every week. I like these post not only because it spreads the link love, but it also highlights some posts that David things would be good reading for the rest of his readers.

I also put the Twitter widget in the sidebar. I am really getting into it, but may have to cut myself off because of its ability to reduce my productivity. Can not have that now can I. I sense a post about productivity coming on here( I do owe Steli one).

One last change that is only noticable to me, but other wordpress users should also use, I activated Askimet to reduce spam.

Future Change:
Just looking at the site to see if there are any other updates, and noticed my side bar is awfully long, really need to get a new template with at least two sidebars. A new template will hopefully be in the works with in the next couple of months.

Got any suggestions for Themes?

Hi Adam! Top Commentators plugin is awesome! Works like a charm, and you can also edit the php file to change the options and configure the plugin (like putting 15 people instead of 10 and stuff like that)

As for themes recommendations, I really like the Cleaker theme, here’s the url

Or the ISmart theme (by BloggerLounge and SmartWealthyRich hehe)

I only removed the twitter sidebar widget when twitter started REALLY playing up, as it was causing my site to load slowly (or should I say MORE slowly, mediatemple are evil!!).
Personally I love a nice long sidebar, although probably sensible to trim it on article pages.

Maybe I will just add more posts, that I think I have it set to show 3 or 4 posts , maybe I’ll need to up it to 5.

Hmm I will have to keep an eye on the speed, I know before I added several other widgets it was slow.
Yet another reason to upgrade.

Hey Adam, I noticed something about your top commentators plugin, and it happened to me to when I installed it, by default wordpress will put your URL in the comments that you post, so it will show up in your top commentators section, you can edit the plugin file and fix that easily by adding your name(s) in the “filter_users” section, so that it will prevent the top commentators plugin from displaying your name on there ;)

I must say that this is the most useful plugin ever! After installing one at my personal finance site, I was able to increase comment tremendously!

Ditto what everyone has been saying here. The top commentators plugin and the do-follow plugin are 2 that really promote comments and conversations on your site.
