Link Love for Commentators

Posted by Pixelhead

I have been noticing more and more blogs are doing the link love type post for top commentators, which works in conjunction with a top commentator widget. This is a super way to increase comments on a blog, and it is also a great way to help out the commentators who frequent your blog.

On Pixelheadonline, I have been giving you the commentators two links and stumble in my posts. I also try and visit the blogs of commentators on a somewhat regular basis and participate in the discussions that are going on on these awesome communities.

How Frequent should the Link Love posts be?

I have been trying to do them about twice a month. I know many others do them on a weekly basis. I prefer an un-Link Lovescheduled link love post, but I also like to give link love in other posts as well. But one is usually around the middle of the month, and the other is around the end or the beginning of the next month.
Sites that do Link Love posts for commentators:

  1. David of Pureblogging.com is one of the first blogs that I became aware of that does the top commentators post. David has an awesome blog with lots of info on Blogging, which ranges from basic to technical.
  2. Adam over at MonkAtWork.com does a Gratitude Friday post to show gratitude for those  commentators who have participated in a meaningful way. MonkAtWork is kind of like a personal growth blog were Adam offers up advice about growing as a human.
  3. Sarah over at BlueJar.com does a Jar Full of Links post for her top commentators. Be sure to check out her How to create a Favicon post for some easy to follow directions about making Favicons for your site.
  4. Saman of Samanthon does a Speedy Links post every week for the top commentators. For info about windows and windows hacks, check out his site.
  5. Cristian of CristianR.com does a weekly post called Friday Night Bite My Shiny Metal Links(love the title). Cristian is a relatively new blogger from Romania. He has some pretty groovy posts, so give him a read.
  6. Aaron over at TodayisThatDay does a weekly Link Love posts, its not really a top commentator’s post, but I so love the name, and Aaron’s blog is an example of an awesomely positive blog, that helps others to improve their lives.

This is a short list, so if I missed anyone, please let me know, and I will add you. As I come across other blogs that do these types of review posts, I will add them to the list.

How do you get mentioned in one of these posts?

Visit these sites and participate in the conversation. Don’t just leave a comment like “Swell site, I’ll be back”. Actually read the post and leave comment that adds to the info. After you do that, usually a little mentioning of one of your posts is ok if done in a tactful manner. For instance, if you are commenting on this blog, you might be able to say “I have a similar post about commenting at url.”

Using keyword text by using “a href” tags is often acceptable, but don’t load them with a bunch of keywords. This may or may not be allowed depending upon the blog. Here on Pixelhead it is groovy, as long as it is done in a meaningful way. No more than one per post though.

How do you give Link Love?

*The graphic above was found via Google images and was found on Bulimia Anorexia Nervosa Association(BANA), which is great organization that is “committed to the provision of specialized treatment education and support services for individuals affected directly and indirectly by eating disorders.”

I’ve decided to add the “Top Commentators” plugin to my site as well. I also like the idea of writing a post with top commentators and linking back to their site once again.

@GnomeyNewt – thanks for writing that post on favicons, it was my pleasure to mention you.

@Aaron – no problem Aaron, and love the new article about Goal Attainment.

@Joanna(Coachingwizardy), thanks for the mention, and thanks for stopping by.

@Adam Kayce – Thanks for the gratitude( we all need to show more of it I believe) Taking a lot of time moderating comments sounds like a good problem to have. I am sure you will get there.

@John Bennett- great I’ll stop by ThingsThatAreFun more frequently…your feed is in my Reader.

Cool – I need to check out the Top Commentators plugin. Not sure about a weekly post – I hardly have enough time to do my own posts. Oh wait, that’s because I spend all my time reading blogs, not writing!

Question – A touch off topic, but the top commentators widget.. Do you happen to know how often it updates? Is it monthly top commentators? Hourly? Forever?

Thanx :)

@Stephen, I know what you mean. Blogging does seem to be a lot about being able to balance all of the activities. Sometimes I think I don’t spend enough time, then at others I think I spend too much.

@Michael they are all great blogs that the writers spend quite a bit of time working on. Check ‘em out and get involved. I am sure they will reciprocate.

@Cathy- I believe the update occurs after the comments are moderated. You can set the reset (number back to zero) to what ever number you want. I do a month, but others do longer, forever might be an option as well. The plugin I use is theShow Top Commentatorsplugin.
It also has some other options for adjusting various aspects, which can be found in editing page.
Thanks for the question

Ukrainian,
It does involve reviewing comments and weeding out bad ones. Your site should also develop commenting standards, which I have been meaning to do. I am sure that will be the subject of one of my upcoming posts.
