Commenting Guidelines

Posted by Pixelhead

Emperor having CoffeeWith the increase in comments to the blog, I am also seeing and increase spammy comments as well as some really awesome comments. In order to ensure quality comments are being left, and to make the top commentators spot more valuable, I am going to create a commentators guidelines page which should be referred to prior to leaving comments that are questionable. This post will also be the basis for the forthcoming commentators guidelines.

If you have any comments or suggestions about my comments guidelines please let me know.

Additionally, you may also contact me via the Pixelheadonline Contact form if you have any other questions or would like to just say hello or inquire about advertising on the directory or blog.

Update: Commentators Guidelines page is up and also put a link to it in the commenting template.

What if you have a blog that has minimal content?

Paula do you mean a blog that was created solely for adsense and uses only articles from other sites?

I’ve been thinking about add a “disclaimer” to my site as well for comments. I have to delete comments that aren’t blocked as spam all the time and it get’s a little annoying.

I have just thought about doing the same thing, over at my own blog. After I changed comments from no follow to do follow, I have recived a lot of comments. Then when you click their link, it takes you to some affiliate crap. I also get a lot of these “Thanks for sharing”, where I really get the feeling, that this guy have not even read the damm thing. This is a good idea. I link the lists of blogs which allows do follow, because I find a lot of new and intersting blogs, and I have the possiblity to get a link back. But on the other hand, a lot of people are using them to spam people with useless comments in order to get higher ranking.

@John – It is a a little annoying to have to delete all the spam comments. I feel badly too. Like this morning a guy left a really good comment, but he was linking to a site without a blog, and using a keyword for his name. tsk tsk tsk.

@Jakob – I too think the list is a great way to meet a lot of other do follow bloggers to network with. I guess dealing with the spam comments is just part of the job.

I installed do follow a few weeks ago and somehow ended up being added to lists all over the internet. I added do follow for MY MEMBERS who all have blogs similar to mine, not for random people who decide to stop by and leave worthless comments with links leading to sites created just days ago with no content, or porn sites or even worse hate sites.

The do follow movement I have come to realize must have been dreamed up by someone looking to mooch off of sites with a high Google page rank. It was never intended to really help your regular visitors but rather those who want to run through and get what they can from you and split.

I haven’t removed do follow, but you need to make at least 10 posts on my blog now before the do follow tag is removed.

@Dana don’t you mean you need to make 10 comments before the no follow tag is removed? I am contemplating using that pluggin in the future.

I hope every blogger is like you Dana. The sad fact is that there are spammers everywhere, and on my blog alone, the no follow tag does not deter them from filling my Akismet folder.

For me, what I value more when I make comments are responses from the bloggers, making me know that they took time to read my comments.

It is also a sad fact, that for me, I usually arrive at a blog from links on other blogs promising interesting content. When I do land on one, I read as much as I can on their list of articles and do bookmark them. However, I am not lucky to have a lot of time to go back regularly. I guess that might make me a passerby most of the time.

I hope that does not decrease my worth as a real human reader. I just plant seeds of friendship wherever I go, with people of the same interests.

Pixelhead, this is cool idea. I have thought of adding a commenter’s rule too, but thought better of it, knowing that spammers do not actually read them and that I do moderate my comments anyway.

“Seeds of friendship” is a great phrase. I was getting some comments that were on the edge of spammy. Guidelines just seemed like a good idea that I have heard others do as a means of legal protection.

Yes Pixelhead, I meant to say “no follow” tag.

I, like most WP users, already have Askimet but I got tired of the filth I was seeing in my Askimet spam folder as well and installed Bad Behavior. Now those nasty spam bots can’t even get to my site and my Askimet folder has been spam free for over a week now. I am in heaven :)
