Digg:Do You Love to Shout

Posted by Pixelhead

The first Web2.0 Wednesday is a post about Digg.

I have not been a fan or user of Digg in the past, but this week that seems to have changed. Monday morning I got added by Jon of SWR, and after that it seemed like I was being shouted at, adding a new fan, or being added as a mutual friend every time I checked my email throughout the next several days. People have been shouting at me to check out some links. I have actually seen a couple of stories that I sent shouts out to all of my contacts. That probably is not a good thing to do to often, and when I do, I need to be certain it is a Digg worthy site.

This week, I have been going through the top Digg stories and adding people that have made good comments on stories. For example, I was just going to Digg the Plastic Ocean article, but found that it was already submitted. The one person who made a comment that was really relevant, I added.

So its that easy to add people to your Digg network. Of course many of the people I contacted did not return the favor and add me as a friend. But that is fine.

I also was going through Digg and making comments on some top stories. After which, I would frequently get an email notifying me that I had a new fan. I would then check their profile out and add them as a friend.

At the beginning of the week, I had maybe 5 people in my network, currently I have 28. I think that is a pretty nice gain for three days.

Got a story you need Dugg, let me know I will check it out. I can’t guarantee front page yet, but I can get you at least a few Diggs. Work on your network, and mine and yours might add up.

Or you can do as Stephen from Vandelay Web Design does and utilize second tier Social Networks to set up a Domino affect and push your posts up to the front page. But having a little network of your own, that gives you a little something to bring to the table.

I started this post just to talk about the shout feature which was recently added to Digg, but ended up being more about creating a network on Digg. I myself think the Shout feature is a great way to communicate with your Digg friends, however I have heard that true Diggers don’t.

What do you think? Do you like the Shout feature? Are you going to work on your Digg network? Give me a shout. I promise, I’ll give you a shout back.

Update:Steven asked me in the comments below about my Digg profile. I am EmperorAnton on Digg, which is a Star Wars reference that a friend started referring to me, so no I don’t have illusions of grandeur.

Actually my week of Digg started with Jon adding me, but then you added me as well and gave me a shout to Digg check out the Jennifer Young story, who is a really talented artist by the way. And it did fit nicely into my week of Digging.

Thanks for compliment(I had to look up erudite{characterized by great knowledge; learned or scholarly: an erudite professor; an erudite commentary.} Sure I would be interested in guest blogging, but I am really behind in my other guest blogging invites, but I will do my best. What do you have in mind?

I’m not sure about the shout feature yet. So far I’ve gotten mostly information that is of no interest to me and from the same people over and over. Definitely not something you want to do often. I’ll probably use it myself on occasions where I’m really aiming for Digg traffic. Thanks for the link by the way.

I used to shout when I was a little boy, but the people around me did not seem to be loving it :(

I favor Stumble over Digg. In fact, I just stumbled your home page…hope that helps!

Thanks Susan, I am sure it will help. The traffic I get from Stumbleupon at this point in time has been a lot greater than Digg. Since last week though, I have increased my network on Digg 10 fold. But I think I need to sit down and do some writing so that I can come up with something that is Digg and Stumble worthy alike. Currently a head cold, seems to be limiting me to nothing more than commenting. Thanks for stopping by Susan.

The shout feature is really starting to get on my nerves.

I must get 5-10 shouts everyday to digg something.

When you digg it, and shout them back to digg urs…they don’t even do it half of the time.

Getting on my nerves.

I hear you Andrew. I have started only checking my shouts 2x a day, that is unless someone that is one of my better contacts sends me a shout that looks interesting…Digg should have different levels of contacts don’t you think.

I used the shout feature for the first time a few days ago and the post wound up hitting the front page. I don’t have a ton of friends, so I’m not sure how much the shouts helped, but it did get me a few diggs within just minutes of submitting. I’m sure I’ll use it again, but not very frequently.

It certainly doesn’t take many Diggs does it. If you get one person to Digg it and their contacts do as well, pretty soon it’s a huge amount of traffic. I think helps to have a quality post that your Digging as well.

Quality and contacts are definitely the #1 and #2 most important aspects of the digg. I’m not sure which is 1 and which is 2. I’d say probably contacts is #1.

Yes, with enough contacts, the worst content can get to the front of Digg. But in the long run, quality will do more for you, as anyone who comes to a crappy page will not stay for long.
