Social Media Article

Another top commentator, Steven Snell of Vandelay Website Design, in the post Building Consistent Traffic With Social Media, gives some good advice about building consistent traffic using a variety of social media sites.

Steven has shown that he is a master of using the Social media to build traffic with many of his posts becoming very popular on sites such as Digg, Stumbleupon, and Del.icio.us.

A couple of key tips that I would like to highlight from the post include:

Whether you are a seasoned social media user or new to using social media sites, I suggest checking out the articles in the Social Media category on his site, where you can find such articles as the one listed above and others such as 233 Social Networking Sites for Marketing Your Blog.

I’m more on the new end as far as social media is concerned, but I’ve been doing well with the buttons I’ve added to my posts. I’ve always noticed that most people seem to focus on Stumble Upon, which is pretty interesting … I always thought Digg was the dominant system, but they seem to have fallen pretty quickly from grace?

I think with the buttons the best bet is to just use a few, so they stand out more. If SU is working for you, keep the button on your posts. I think people are more prone to thumb up an article because it’s one step easier than digging a story.

Forrest, I have to agree with you about Digg falling from grace.

Steven, I have never used any buttons(other than the WP bookmark widget), but I guess that I should if I want to optimize for SU and/or Digg.

I read several posts today about Mixx, a new Social media site that is just two months old. I imagine I will be doing a review post of that this week.

Adam,
I would recommend doing some experimenting with at least the SU button. I used to have one on my posts and I removed it a while ago to see what happened. I think I’m going to put it back because it did seem to make a small difference.

I like Mixx. Obviously being new it doesn’t yet send very significant traffic, but there are so many people joining now that I think it has a real chance. And it seems to be attracting users who are very social media savvy, which I think is a good thing.

Hi! This is my first time to see your page, but I really liked what I read. I’m a fellow digger (kaeda on digg) and I run the undergroundunrest.com/blog. I was reading some of your older posts and noticed you talk about shouting on digg. I’ve done this many times and it helped get me an average of about 5000 readers a month. However… lately Digg just isn’t letting me shout. I can’t figure out what happened, and I haven’t been banned or received an email saying why this would happen.

Has this happened to you? I’ve asked a lot of other Diggers and not gotten any responses. Thanks.

Jaden, thanks for stopping by, I’ll add you at Digg. I have not heard of your problem before. Let me know if you find out what or who has caused it.
It’s not something in your Digg settings is it?

Joe, there are ways of Stumbling your own posts…you can ask someone else to do it…you can stumble your own occasionally, but I would not get in the habit of doing it often. And as Steven said above, you can optimize your posts by putting the SU buttons on your posts.

Mauro, I would recommends reading the articles in Steven’s Social media category above, but if I can be of assistance, please give me a shout.

I currently don’t have SU button on my posts but I got some great traffic from SU when one of my posts was noticed by an active user.

Now I am in process of creating several good posts to try them out on Digg and ask someone to SU them and measure the traffic results. That should be an interesting battle.

I don’t optimize for social media like Steven suggest either, but it still comes in.
Good luck with your social media experiment. Let me know when your post is up and I will help you out.

I don’t have SU buttons on my pages either. You can definitely get solid traffic from SU if you have a reader base of active SU users regardless of what you have on the page. I have had good success with optimizing the blog posts for delicious though.
