Environmental Post for December 2007

Posted by Pixelhead

Here is the December Environment post which has some articles and more that I have noted in the course of my surfing in the past month.Lake Pontchartrain Sunset

Mymilemarker.com

Mymilemarker.com, which is part of the Sidebar Network that was discussed in the last post Twitter Update: Have You Overheard?, is a site that allows you to keep track of your gasoline consumption. Sign up and add all of your vehicles and after you fill up, text Milemarker your odometer readings, gallons bought, and more. Could be useful as a way of tracking your mileage for a business as well.

I think if you keep track of your gasoline consumption, it might enable you to actually reduce the amount of gas you use, which means you contribute less carbon to the environment.

Harvesting the Power of the Ocean

A wave power article about Finavera Renewables who are developing a wave park off of the coast of California.
AquaBuoy

Finerva manufactures the AquaBuoy(picture at left) which is a device that generates electricity by using a piston type

generator. Check out the Aqua Buoy video.

From Hugg.com

I found the Mother Jones article The last empire which attempts to answer the question “Will Earth survive China’s economic development? I had to stop reading the story several times because it was almost as depressing as the Plastic Ocean article, but a great informative read nevertheless.

Natural Photography

What better way to appreciate nature than to photograph it. Here are a couple of Photography sites that I recommend you check out for their breathtaking photos.

Thanks for sharing. They were very beautiful shots. Photography is an art by itself and the photographers were able to convey a message only thru pictures. I envy them and I thank them so much because they brought me back to reality that we live in a polluted world but there are still places that serenity lingers.

Dave, thanks for stopping by and commenting. Just stopped by your site Musings of the Charger, and love the Teenage Poem.
Yes there are still places on this big globe that we can appreciate. But I do believe we all have the responsibility to do what we can to preserve them for future generations, so that they can do more than look at pictures of them.

Had never heard of MyMileMarker…I’ll have to try it out and see just how much money I’d save riding a scooter to work! :)

I am sure you could save quite a bit, depending upon the vehicle that you are driving instead of the scooter. Arizona is nice place to use a scooter for your commute.
Great site E.B. Lane has, too bad the home page is all flash. But then again large agencies like them don’t have to worry about the SERP’s now do they?

its good to see clean energy sources getting promotion, but i still wonder how much difference it makes if countries like china continue to use polluting sources of fuel. That aquabuoy looks interesting!

What a depressing article … the ‘plastic ocean’ makes me think of that 1970s (?) commercial with the lone tear falling down the man’s face. I’ve never crossed an ocean, and without a TV, my idea of what the sea is supposed to be like seems to be a little out of date.

We’ve been through a lot and keep struggling: a cold war, nuclear proliferation, AIDS. As the sky gets noticeably browner, we see freak storms, more powerful wildfires ( supposedly because a hotter desert dries out the sage brush, turning it to kindling ) and more … I personally find this a lot more terrifying than, well, international terrorism.

I’ve been doing what I can, personally, to have less of a negative impact. I have to admit I get pretty greedy with the pleasure travel, but I’m flattered at the idea any of my photos might inspire anyone to realize why preservation is so important.

Hi,

I am really happy to see a few interesting environmental news posts on your pixelheadonline. The plastic ocean article made me want to read twice. I am really worried about the NATURE’s gift being plundered by the man.

The two pics are very nice, wish I could get their high resolution versions. MyMileMarker.com seems to be a very good service but since I have for sometime discontinued using my vehicle and use public transportation, I have little use for it, but fact remains that it’s very essential to optimally use the natural resources.

AquaBuoy is a very good concept and reminds us that we still have many resources to get electricity from.

Sendev, I am glad you liked the post and got something out of the articles.

Jalaj, yea I love the aquaBouy idea as well. I think we all need to conserve more natural resources and use the renewable ones in greater quantities.

It’s nice to see that there are lots of people are concern in preserving the environment. How I wish we could live in a pollution-free environment. But with our present situation, almost have bad effects in our environment, even in our health. Let’s help in saving our environment for a better future.
