Building Blog Traffic with Blogcatalog

Posted by Pixelhead

This is the second in a series of Building Traffic with Social Media blog posts. The first post focused on Using Mybloglog to build traffic, and ths one will focus on Blogcatalog , which is another great site for using to promote your blog and for developing networks of blogging friends.

What is Blogcatalog?

Blogcatalog is essentially a blog directory, however, it is without a doubt, one of the largest and best blog directories that is being actively developed.

What features does Blogcatalog Have?

How do You Join Blogcatalog?

Blogcatalog, is free to join, after which you may add your blogs provided they have a minimum number of posts and I believe must also be at least 6 months old. I might be wrong on this, but I have had at least one blog not accepted, but then when I resubmitted it several months later, the blog was then accepted.

After joining and before having your blog accepted you will need to place some sort of Blogcatalog Badge or widget on your blog. The widgets are very similar to the Mybloglog widget, so you may opt for just putting on a Blogcatalog Badge on your site.

Blog Catalog Premium services

BlogCatalog has some premium services available which include a nice little logo next to your profile saying you are a Blogcatalog supporter. There is also a premium listing method for the Blogcatalog directory, which will enable your blog to be listed ahead of other blogs in a particular category. There are a limited number of premium listings per category, so you may have to purchase a premium listing in an alternate category. The premium listings are also on a month to month basis, however the prices are pretty inexpensive, and many of the categories in addition to being cached in Google, also have some pretty good page rank.

How do I build traffic?

  1. Blogcatalog has a lot of communities available which can allow bloggers to network with similar types of blogs. After logging on, do a group search using your particular keywords. For instance, for my pet blog, I did a search for pets, dogs, and cats; and then I joined several pet related groups.
  2. Don’t see a group to your liking, Start your own, and then go invite others to join it.
  3. Visit other bloggers profiles that you might be able to network with and invite them to join your group.
  4. Leave blog review comments on the blog pages. This will involve actually going to other blogs and checking them out. You may also want to leave a comment on their blog. (Please don’t leave a “nice blog, check mine out comment)
  5. Another way you can get traffic is by participating in the discussions in the particular groups in a meaningful manner. This could be asking relevant comments, or even asking advice of other bloggers. Bloggers love to be asked for advice.
  6. Start new meaningful threads on groups. Don’t be afraid to start some controversial threads either. But please be nice.

How Else Can You Build Traffic With Blogcatalog?

I am not an authority on Blogcatalog, but this post covers the basics on using it for networking. If any other readers have any other methods for networking with Blogcatalog that I have not covered, please feel free to either leave a comment with your advice or leave a url to any Blogcatalog resource posts that may be helpful.

I am EmperorAnton on Blogcatalog if you’s like to add me.

Is there a way to really improve your site from a Google standpoint with BlogCatalog? I tried it for a while but gave up… what are the benefits for site moniterization from BC or is it purely for blogs that just want to gain readers?

I know many businesses that have blogs on their sites that use Blogcatalog. It’s great for getting to know bloggers in your niche. By participating in the community, you can also position yourself as an authority in your particular field. Oh, check out the Stumbleupon group if you join….lots of Stumblers to network on that group.

I usually go in cycles with all of the Social networks. I usually start using once someone from one of the networks contacts me.

How has your luck been with Blogcatalog?

I’m loathe to add things to my blog ( other than content, I guess ). One of the most important rules when composing a photograph is to avoid distractions, and as a person with bad organization skills, I make an effort to carry that through to life in general.

I’m trying to find ways to get people who wouldn’t otherwise see my work to look at it, so Blog Catalog has my interest. But would it be worth it? More to the point: is there a way to find out before putting a widget in the sidebar?

I have used blog catalog and I found it useful for improving traffic, but ultimately the quality of a site decides the traffic.

Interesting ideas, thanks! I’ve been working hard to increase my blog traffic levels with little success, so maybe something like blogcatalog could give me a much-needed boost!

Forrest, you don’t have to put one of the big Blogcatalog widgets on your site, just a little badge would do.

Daniel your so right on the quality point.

Steven, let me know when you sign up, I’ll add you asap. Would you consider sites like Mybloglog and Blogcatalog to be second tier Social Marketing sites?

FYI:If anyone wants to learn about Social Marketing from a master, check out Steven’s Social Networking category of posts.

Frank, let me know when you join Blogcatalog as well and I’ll add you too.

You’ve posted some really great tips. Most of the blogs i read that post about how to use blogcatalog only suggest joining as many neighborhoods and adding as many friends as possible, ehich is a bad idea by the way. BlogCatalog is a great way for bloggers to connect and help each other out, the traffic part just follows naturally.

Thanks for your Support,

Daniel / BlogCatalog.com

Actually you don’t have to place a widget or button on your site if you don’t want to, BlogCatalog also offers meta-verification as well. I should also mention that the link back/widget/badge/meta options are just to verify ownership of the blog, its not mandatory that you have to keep it up after you have been approved if you don’t feel it fits well in your layout/design.

Thanks Oscar, that is some really good info to have. I personally like the little widgets, but that is just me.
Not being a designer, and having a really busy sidebar is something that doesn’t bother me too much. Perhaps down the line after the site has had a good redesign I might, but for now, I kind of like all the widgets.

I have just found the blog and love the topics covered. I have built a blog and it is slowly coming around but because of how busy I have been lately it is hard to keep up with how much time it takes. How do you allocate time in your busy day.

No this is not the same as BlogRush, and yes it does work.

NHP- I find the blogdesk tool to be very valuable for organizing my blogging. It allows easy post generation while I am both on and off line.

Hi, I would like to know if you know anything about the “thief” of traffic from blogcatalog, I mean before I used blogcatalog my blog was the first one in google search (for words like “A te jovanotti traduccion al espanol”) now is blogcatalog the first one with my post!!! They are steeling from me!! -kind of-. The worst is that when you click on the blogcatalog link you doesn’t see my post, but others!!.
Do you know how do I stop blogcatalog from doing this?
thanks,
t.
pd:sorry for my english…. hope you understood my point…

tcalo, I did a search for the phrase and you were number 1 and 2, while blogcatalog is 6 and 7. Check the terms across multiple Google Data centers to see a more accurate ranking. Also, if you want your site to rank better, build more links to both the home page and the related subpages using the desired keywords as the title text. See my link building posts for more info on link building.

Hi, I was checking on google.it -because I’m in Italy- but on google.com is like you said. Anyway I noticed yesterday -looking around to see what others are doing- that others bloggers do not use their blog ulr for the blogcatalog but they used something like myblogurl.com/myaboutpage or any other page. is this a way to avoid the “steel” of google positions?,
thanks,
t.
