MSN Buys Yahoo | Its a Done Deal

Posted by Pixelhead

Driving home from a funeral today, I heard on the news about the purchase of Yahoo by MSN.  At the time it was not a done deal. Lizzie just told me she got an email that said that it is a done deal. We shall see.

What do you think about the purchase of Yahoo by MSN?

I always preferred Yahoo as a search engine over MSN but if this buy over was true then I hope MSN would adopt Yahoo’s tech and not the other way round.

We shall see :)

Yes you would hope so. It is a little concerning to see number two and number three joining to take on number one.

Interesting. I still haven’t heard anything about it, but now things will be quite different. I wonder will the duo by able to come close to the big G.

Update: I just heard on the news today that Google is going to file a petition to stop the sale, and wants to help Yahoo to stay independent.

I actually like the idea of three rather than two as well, but I do think that Google really needs some better competition to keep them on their toes.
Perhaps with all the layoffs Yahoo is doing, it will spur some changes that will allow it to flourish.

That’s interesting. Seems that Yahoo’s gonna shuttle between Microsoft and Google.

Why would Google petition the sale? A little scared of being dominated. I do think yahoo needs help and MSN needs much more. I just don’t like that Google makes all the rules and if you don’t follow then they punish your lively hood. As you can see we have a love hate relationship. Google does take care of us so I can’t complain to much.

Where would I find more info on this deal???

MSN bought out Yahoo!? That is crazy I would have called the reverse! I wonder how this will ultimately change Yahoo! because MSN is about one of my least favorite search engines. It’ll be interesting to watch the future unfold.

Murad, I have not heard anything in the news about it, but Lizzie’s source says it is a done deal. Microsoft has a lot going on besides MSN.com, whereas, Yahoo, just has Yahoo, however large it maybe. But I guess since they had to let so many people go lately, the company must not be doing so well.

Incredible that Google is coming with allegations about Microsoft destroying the openness of the internet and trying to monopolize the search engine market… Look who is talking :)

Here is a pretty good article showing how everything is playing out. I am not sure that Lizzie’s source is correct on a done deal. On the other hand Microsoft may have put on the table a deal that Yahoo may not be able to refuse.

I am not exactly sure of Lizzie’s source either, although I do know the contact is extremely well connected.

If I was a betting man I would put my money on the deal going through.

Soge- I do agree with you on this! No offense to Google but I guess their stocks (-12%) got the Microsoft slap. Know they know how it feels when we get the Google slap on our PR’s and SERP’s.

This has been a very big move in the online world. I’ve been reading news about this for almost a year now, when Microsoft started its bids.

Every one seems to think Microsoft and Yahoo will be some kind of great Google killer. Wake up folks, any mega corp has too much baggage to really give a crap about the little people. No mater how the sale turns out you and I will be screwed in some manner.

If the deal does happen, I really don’t think the two will be able to “kill” Google, but they might be able to dip into Google’s profits a bit.

I agree. It will not kill Google, but I believe that it will change the search engine world. If the deal goes through Google may become more lenient about certain things like punishing PR and SERP’s. Just my opinion. As of now Google owns what 60% of the search engine market. If Microsoft can do it better than Google why wouldn’t people switch over?

This sucks… I don’t want another Microsoft-centric search engine, which is exactly what it will become. Microsoft is going to use Yahoo to push more developers and consumers towards their products, like they do with everything else. Oh well, Google will still rule the world.

I’m not really all that worried. I mean, do you really think Microsoft is really going to change yahoo all that much? And even if it does, Google will still be the search engine champ. I don’t even use yahoo, or any other search engine, a whole lot anyways.

Lets face it, as it stands Google operates a near monopoly on the internet. Additional competition in this area should be welcomed.

Yahoo keeps his cards tight and will have to wait a bit more to see in which direction will they go. A bit more about it you’ll find here http://blog.wired.com/business/2008/02/bits-and-bytes.html

If it happened, it might have the knock-on effect of waking Joe Public up to the fact that there’s only one gateway to the ‘Net for 60%+ of people, and that is not healthy.

Yahoo + MSN are _way_ behind Google in Search, even bound together.
