Logo Contest

Posted by Pixelhead

I am considering doing a Logo Contest on Pixelheadonline, but I want to know if there is an interest from the readers in such a contest. I am in the brain storming stages at the current moment, so any feedback would be appreciated.

What I have thus far.

Well thats it so far. Any feedback would be appreciated.

I would also like to submit the first entry for a friend of mine, Roman, who is a Polish designer. Roman made the Logo for Earth-in-Hand Landscape seen below.

Hi Pixel,

I like contests as you know;) Do you want a logo created for you? Or a sweet logo for us? I am in so let me know what the rule are. How many entries like two different styles? If there is anything I can do let me know.

No, just want to have a logo contest, but you just never know. If someone else or I like a logo, you just might get some requests for new logos. At any rate, it will not only get the participating logo designers some exposure, but it will also get the sites that the logos were made for a link or two.
I still have to work out the details, but that is why I wrote this post to get feedback and to see if there is interest.

Why do you want a new logo? I personally like the spinning head.

Pet-a-holic, Lizzie my wife says thankyou…it took her a while to make that logo. I don’t want a new logo. Someone, I think Dosh-Dosh posted a tweet a while ago, and asked who made good logos. I have been wanting to run a contest so I could give away Alex’s Ipod I won off him, so I thought, why not have a Logo contest.

You’re wife did a rockin’ job on your logo! :-)

I don’t know if it will be of use to you in any way, but I’ll offer a months banner on my blog to the winner..As long as it is in no way related to gambling, porn, or drugs. (or otherwise funky stuff)..

What a fantastic idea. I wish I had some talent … anything I might come up with would look like the work of a six year old. But I’m really curious to see what people come up with. I really like the logo to Earth in Hand.

Off topic: Dosh-Dosh has a very interesting article on the page called “What You Don’t Publish Defines Your Site.”

This contest is a great idea. I hope I will see it when it becomes available – will be interesting to see all the great ideas – one suggestion, maybe make the thing interactive, and run it over time, say 3 to 4 weeks, with each week having your readers vote for the top design – then in the 5th week, have them vote for the top, 2nd, & 3rd place…

Sounds like a good contest. Unfortunately, I have absolutely no skills when it comes to graphics.

@Spostareduro- thanks for the sponsor offer, thats great. Oh and thanks for review on your blog.

@Forrest- I believe Roman used Photoshop for the logo. The building on the Logo is part of Earth-in-Hand’s barn. Logo/website design is just one of Roman’s talents.
I’ll check out Dosh-Dosh’s article, thanks.

@Mark- Thats a great idea, I like it a lot.

@Piper- I don’t have any design talent either, but I like many others, know what I like.

@Eva-I have not set a limit on the number of logos from each participant, but setting a limit does sound like a good idea.

I would like to offer my services as a sponsor. Let me know if you are interested.
No Porn, No Gambling, No Drugs. Just trying to help a friend.
(You might know me better from Working at Home on the Internet).

Hi Pixel,

After reading I’m moved to make a comment, albeit bold, so take it or leave it.

As everyone knows, logo contests certainly aren’t anything new; neither is the concept of offering exposure in exchange for free work. Especially over the last several years, this market has become increasingly saturated and thus competitive. Designers are willing to offer cheap work, free work, and basically undervaluing themselves and galvanizing the market for the rest of the fairly paid and talented designers out there. Not to mention their own industry and livelyhood.

Okay, so this argument isn’t anything new, either. :)

Instead of perpetuating it, might I offer an alternative? (Complaining never did anything, right?)

What about posing the contest to non-designers. I know, sounds counterintuitive, but consider this: Many seos, online marketers, photographers and other industry folk do have a working knowledge of basic creative principles and/or various design apps. Provided you get enough entries, surely there will be a logo you can use, designers keep their market safe, and entrants get an opportunity to try something new. A unique concept never hurt blog traffic, either.

Lastly, to budding designers: (Or to budding anythings…)

Exposure is not the way to make money in your field. *Charging what your worth* is the way to make money in your field.

/// end ball busting. Thanks for reading.

Joe, that would be sweet…thanks for stopping by as well.

Megan, hmm, I like the idea of a layman logo designer contest.

There may be something to that layman logo thing…maybe a two-part contest?

Yes, I am liking the idea of a multi part contest.
I’ll work on the rules this upcoming weekend, and get a more definitive logo contest post up.

Heh I should of worked more on my design skills I guess, as it is now my logo would be better to enter worst logo contest or something. Hopefully contests like this will reduce the number of memes and such. And one last thing if I may-it is true that exposure does not bring money but it just might bring work to designer or anyone else really which will hopefully allow one to make money based on skill.
