Will You Put Your Lights Out?

Posted by Pixelhead

Here is another little environmental post for March08 that just can’t wait. I was sent a message via Stumbleupon this morning, which directed me to 2 Days to Lights Out America/Earth Hour…March 29th and I learned about Earth Hour, an event which was started by World Wildlife Fund.

EarthHour Banner

Earth Hour was created by WWF in Sydney, Australia in 2007, and in one year has grown from an event in one city to a global movement. In 2008, millions of people, businesses, governments and civic organizations in nearly 200 cities around the globe will turn out for Earth Hour. More than 100 cities across North America will participate, including the US flagships–Atlanta, Chicago, Phoenix and San Francisco and Ottawa, Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver.

So What Do You Do For Earth Hour?

At 8pm in what ever time zone you happen to be in, you turn off the lights from 8pm to 9pm March 29th. That is it.

Check out the Earth Hour site and sign up your self, your school, or your company to participate in the event.

Great success. Our town was up to speed. Papers had articles about the date and time. I overheard numerous people talking about it.

Curious to see if any stats can be had by all of this. Really, that may be the only way to get some of the others off the couch and participate.

Cheers!
ERick

That’s definitely a great idea! First time to hear that there’s that kind of program. Hope more people joined.

It’s a cool idea. Hope it gets more popular every year. My neighbors didn’t participate though. You can’t just imagine what you can do if you unplugged yourself. For me, I spent the one hour reading.

Hi Pixelhead, we also had that here in the Philippines. Only for an hour though, would’ve been better if it was a little longer. All lights were turned off.

I added your link to your name Rome…I have been going through my spam to see if real submissions are included. But I get over 1000 spam comments a day, so a few good might not be found. Good way to make sure it doesnt go into spam.

I’m curious how many people actually did this. I remember hearing about it last year. I actually couldn’t participate because I was at a party at a club, however, at home… I did have all my lights out! So I guess I partially joined in!

Where do you see the results from this? Is there a site that shows how much energy was saved during this hour?

The energy saved wont even be a dent in the daily energy consumption around the world. There is so much being used at any given time, that if you shut off yours and so does your neighbor and your neighborhood and your city, you still wont cause a dent in the worldwide picture.
I didn’t participate for all my lights are CFL’s and at 8 o clock I was only running 1 13 watt, haha yeah I’m frugal.

I don’t live in one of the cities that officially participated in the event, but it was still pretty cool to see neighbors/friends participating.

I don’t know how much energy was saved, but I think the primary point was to encourage public dialogue about the state of the environment, and from what I saw it was successful in that regard.

I was more than happy to turn out the lights! But I make a very concise effort to keep my lights turned off when not absolutely needed anyway. So this was not much of an inconvenience for me.

Yep, i ended up turning my lights off. It did not do much of a difference to be honest. You can go without them for a day or so no problem.

This was the silliest thing I had ever heard of – symbolism over substance. If you believe on conservation you need to do so everyday, not just once a year. Next people are going to suggest that no one eat for a day so that we’ll have an excess of food in the world.

Needless to say, my lights stayed on.

I think it’s a very good gesture to start something like this. it makes us aware how important ‘light’ is for us. According to me more and more people should participate in this event and increase global awareness towards electricity.

Now that I look back on this, I was hoping for something impressive. Nothing happened at all in Miami, and I completely forgot about it. I also noticed a lot more coverage leading up to the event, than actually on the event itself. A shame.

Our earth is a beautiful home and humans are the life on earth to take care of it.
Turning off light for an hour is a big reminder that will with time extend awareness in other areas of earth-care. I like to see a bandwaggon effet! Great idea!
