Google Vs Technorati

Posted by Pixelhead

The other day I noticed that the Incoming Links notification was being delivered by Google Blog Search instead of Technorati. I went onto the Wordpress forum and found that the change to Google was made with Wordpress 2.31, however there is a pluggin that will change it back to Technorati. In the forum, there is a mix of those who like Google vs Technorati. With Technorati, I had noticed for awhile that my incoming links were rather spammy at times only showing a few scrapper sites that had stolen my content. That in itself is another blog post. Freakin Scrappers.

Since Google has been delivering the results I have not been seeing any of the crap, but I have not been seeing any of the good either. Back several weeks ago I had made a video about why I blog for a group vlogging mashup Darren Rowse, the Problogger was working on. The link to Darren’s mashup finally showed up today in my incoming links stream, but then I went back a little later to check it out again, and the link is no where to be seen.

Sure Google is huge and will not have down time like Technorati, but all those Google data centers that Google uses to compile its results seem to provide some pretty terrible results for the incoming links stream. I will be installing the pluggin ASAP. If you have linked to me since I upgraded, and I did not receive a notification, I am really sorry if I did not respond. Please let me know if I have missed any one.

Has anyone else noticed a difference? What is your opinion? Which do you like better Google or Technorati for supplying your incoming links notification?

I noticed the change too. Was wondering what was up. Google is known to not show all the incoming links for websites. Not sure how it does for blogs. No better I would guess.

As far as I know, Google is very good search patrol. Then how come it gives out the details of the blogs, I’m really surprised. Though it happens, but Google is the best. It can’t be compared with the others, it has its own place and value.

While I have nothing against technorati, it is Google that we want the links for so if it is Google supplying the notification we can be sure Google has picked up on them, which is nice to know.

I still prefer Technorati and have been meaning to switch back since I updated Wordpress. I think my Dallas real estate blog still too new to see a real difference though.

Thanks, I did not know this plugin. I have not noticed the change. If I do stupid guess, Google is picking the site up in some manual way.

I stopped paying attention to Technorati a long time ago. My site was doubling in traffic every month, and no sign of progress from them. Google is who I want to notice me, so I support the ’switch.’

Now that makes sense…I was wondering why I was showing so few links from google. I hadn’t realized the change. On one site I have Yahoo shows over 80 links, and then google shows 8! I think I’ll get the plug in too!

Great post, I was having this same conversation with a colleague the other day! I think many people still rely on Technorati when searching for blogs, but I have noticed the shift of people turning more often to Google, now. Google seems to be catching up in blog monitoring capabilities, and I find that Technorati isn’t always as reliable as people seem to think it is.

I am not sure but perhaps many blogs don’t ping Google like they do to Technorati. As more bloggers let Google know about their blog, hopefully Google’s Blog results will be able to surpass Technorati incoming links results.

I think it’s a good idea for Google to show the links. The only problem is that showing a limited number of links makes it difficult for the blogger to accurately track the progress a blog is making.
