Make June 8th "World Ocean Day"

Posted by Pixelhead

I was just doing a little environmental blogging for the upcoming June Environmental News post and I came across this 41pounds.org blog article about World Ocean Day, which is trying to become established as being on June 8th. Check out the Celebrate World Ocean Day on June 8th! post, and sign the petition to HELP MAKE A DIFFERENCE FOR OUR OCEAN PLANET!

Oh, by the way, 41pounds.org is a great site that can help you to stop all that pesky junk mail you get with your snail mail, which is both annoying and bad for the environment.

Will you celebrate World Ocean Day?

I’m not sure how much a World Ocean Day could do to actually help the Oceans, but I’m sure at the very least it could raise awareness.

I too have a healthy aversion to the various “days”. I strongly believe that they are created by vested interests like greeting card companies and florists to generate some business!

I am a little leary if another greeting card holiday as well. I think this is not meant to be a holiday, but a day to create awareness, much like Earth Day. The organizations involved with the program do a lot of community out reach programs that educate.

Thx for blogging on World Ocean Day. It’s an event we’ve been coordinating and promoting for the last several years. It is sort of like an Earth Day event, although not nearly as big (yet). It’s getting a lot of attention this year though, so hopefully things are on the upswing. Our world’s ocean needs all the attention and awareness and positive action it can get! Thx for helping spread the word! By the way, in case you want to check out our outfit (two of us plus two interns) you can go to: http://www.TheOceanProject.org thx!

It is good to create awareness like this. Judging from the response on the petition site, I think more effort need to put in.

Bill, I couldn’t agree with you more. Thanks for stopping by and commenting. Only education will help to stop the environmental crisis so that the reefs and the Plastic Ocean problem can be acted upon to prevent even more severe environmental problems.

This is a great idea!! I was just reading in this months Smithsonian a bizarre idea to scrub the air of CO2 and deposit it under the ocean. This can’t possibly be a good idea!!

Sorry I haven’t been around much ( I’ve been really pressed for time, and barely had any to enjoy going online ), but thanks for bringing peoples’ attention to this. And to other important environmental issues.

The plastic ocean article you did a few months ago makes me want to cry. As a photographer, I notice air pollution, because it’s harder to shoot a mountain vista, or other scenery that includes a lot of sky. Pollution in the waters might be less visible, but that doesn’t make it any less important.

I tend to groan myself, over “another day,” and Nicole ( comment #2 ) is right. Circling the box on your calendar won’t do much at all … but raising awareness can only help. You can’t solve a problem until you know it’s a problem to be solved.

While having Special Days may help bring the problem to the fore, its actually how you behave on every ordinary day that will make a real difference.

I agree that it’s what you do between the days that matters. However, starting with one day that highlights the problem and raises awareness is a swim in the right direction(!) and would, perhaps, create the momentum needed to keep it going through the rest of the year.

take care…

World Ocean Day is an opportunity every year to honor the world’s ocean that connects us all, celebrate the products the ocean provides, such as seafood, as well as marine life itself for aquariums, pets, and also a time to appreciate its own intrinsic value.
