Lifecasting on Plurk

Posted by Pixelhead

Like many other bloggers, I just started using Plurk, which is very similar to Twitter, yet different. As you can tell if you look at the sidebar to the left, I now have a Plurk widget, where the BlogRush widget was, because I don’t believe the BlogRush widget resulted in any traffic since I started using it back in September of 2007.

What is Plurk?

Plurk is a microblogging social community much like Twitter. After being asked to join Plurk by numerous people, I finally gave in and took Spostareduro’s invite and joined. As an incentive to add friends, Plurk increases your Karma points. They have a Karma rating scale which has four levels I believe. At each level you get a new title and you get to have some additional privileges.

Plurks, like Tweets, appear

in your timeline or Lifestream(first saw this term used by Maki), and you have the ability to go both backwards and forwards by holding your cursor over and clicking on one of two arrows at either end of your Lifestream.

Karma Points

The emoticons below can be used in your Plurks if you have a Karma over 25, which is my next Karma Goal.

Everyone seems to like the dancing banana.

In addition to the Karma levels, and the emoticons, there are some other groovy features that make it a fun program to waste some time on.

I have just started Plurking, so I am not an experienced Plurker. If you have a Plurk account, please feel free to add me. If you don’t have a Plurk account, why not join and start lifecasting on Plurk?

I dunno. Another social networking program again? Will they ever stop spawning? MySpace looks too cluttered already, plus it’s a pain to navigate around in. And Facebook is headed that way too, no thanks to their still-increasing list of applications. And guess what, you remember Friendster? The social networking site that never really took off on our side of the world? They’ve gone the way of Facebook and started using applications on their site too. So having another program like Plurk that runs like Twitter, with just a slight difference of the Karma points used in the former, is not too enticing right now. Maybe when my friends and contacts start migrating to Plurk will I seriosuly consider it.

I’m still thinking that Twitter is more familiar and user friendly than Plurk. And I still have no reason to find the substitute…

Twitter and Pownce both have issues of down time which can be very annoying whereas, at least so far, Plurk seems to be holding its own!

Nicole, hopefully as they grow they will keep the down time issue a priority.
As they improve the site and the user base increases, it is a possibility. I did notice at least one Plurk about temporary down time.

Davin, I was a bit confused with it at first, but the learning curve is really short.

So many social networks, I can’t decide which ones to choose! This one sounds pretty fun though, I think sites where you can advance in some way. In this case, it is by means of the Karma.

Be careful! Plurk is highly addictive. I’ve resorted to banishing myself for the past few days so I could get some work done. It’s a lot of fun, though, and a great way to meet new people and network your site.

Ally, I know what you mean. I try and only allow myself to much time for interacting on Social communities. Its like everything, you need to use it in moderation and only do it at certain times of the day.

Of course we dont want to be dominated by only 1 or 2 social networks, but it is getting to the stage, which one to use.

I will only use one, too much time to be on more than one, with so much to say several times.

i am not convinced, but then i wasn’t when Myspace started, stupid me!

Haha, I saw the dancing banana for the first time a couple of years ago and it still looks hilarious to me, making me smile. I was asked by my friends to your the Plurk too, so I think I will do so in the next future. Seems like it’s getting more and more popular.

Imho, Plurk and similar sites are wastes of time. Sure they help with certain aspects, but did those areas really need improvement to start with? That time can be spent improving areas that really need improvement, adding new content, etc. Just my views on programs like these.

Plurk sends more traffic to my site than Twitter, even though T has many more followers.
