BrightKite Beta Invites

Posted by Pixelhead

After seeing Tweets about Brightkite from the Viddler Guys, Colin and Sandie, and after reading Colins post about a Viddler tshirt and BrightKite giveaway, I decided to sign up and find out what Brightkite is all about.

Brightkite is described as Location-based social networking, which allows you to Discover who visits your favorite places.

I don’t have a lot of knowledge about Brightkite, but I do have access to 5 invites, if you would want to receive one. I know, you already belong to way too many social networking sites, and really don’t have time to get involved with another.

Well Brightkite seems to be a social networking site that you can use while you are out and about, and will enable you to actually physically meet some other users. I can also see myself using it when I am doing restaurant reviews for thegrubhound or while writing for our travelblog.

So far, I added Lizzie, and drubyt, who was the first person to request that I add him. I also uploaded the picture above that was taken by my pool, and geo tagged the photo. Well, it actually tags the photos with your current location, and I am not exactly sure if that is the same as Geotagging. It does place the picture on a map which marks your current location. I am not exactly sure if I can add photos once I get home and then adjust their map location. Nope, I believe you need to adjust your location to be where the picture was taken, and then you can upload the photo to make the location be more accurate.

You can also set your profile to private so that only your peeps will be able to see where you are taking that risque photo.

Well if anyone would like a Brightkite invite, let me know.

If you use Brightkite, what do you think of it, and do you have any tips?

Geotagging is getting so popular, particularly with apps on the IPhone.

Hmmmm, another interesting angle from a fresh social media endeavour. Time will tell how effective this offering is going to be, or whether it is simply going to fade into obscurity….

Jacques, It is still in beta, so hopefully they will be able to make it a sweet destination site. I would like to see some integration with Flickr and the like.

No thank you. In an earlier comment also I had expressed my reservation about the proliferation of social networks. I simply do not have the time, a fact that seems to apply to you too.

Isn’t that the truth. I am not expecting to be active in this community, unless it becomes really easy to use. They will have to work on it a bit more to get me to use it frequently.

I have to agree with Nicole. The time it takes to get involved in some of these social networking sites is way more than I have. I am already completely booked as it is.

Oh I’m sooo full. I can’t carry anymore! Plurking is good enough for me, and reading good blog posts.

If you continue to use it though, let us know what you ultimately think.

Brightkite seems like it could be a useful and fun service. Nice to see social networking moving further out from behind the desktops. Will be interesting to see how many other apps become more mobile over the next few years. Think that is where social media is ultimately heading.

brightkite is okay but I think since they don’t have an iPhone app they will lose out to others like loopt. my biggest worry is about privacy with these services and if information from the new social sites could be used as admissible evidence in court… eventually it will be!
