Here is another Link Building video I made. I originally was going to use this for a guest post on Link Building Bible, but I just read that LBB was sold…only a five month old blog and it has been sold…hmm.

Link Building Tip

This link building post suggests that when doing your link building you use variety. Sure you want to use your target keywords, but try not to over do it. Over using the keywords could potentially hurt your rankings.

A few ways to use Variety with Link Building:

submit to different categories when doing directory submissions
use stop words occasionally
have more than one keyword you are focusing on
use a variety of types of links such as blogs, directories, forums, paid links, etc…
get some links without keywords by using the url as the link text.
banner add links
a few premium directory submissions
deep link building
use variations of the keyword phrase by switching word order if a multi word keyword phrase is being targeted
use plurals
use both capitals and lowercase

So what are your thoughts on using variety while building links to your site?

Nice video explanation of how to post links and submit. I haven’t figured out how to embed video in my blog posts yet.

I like your video tips though I am restricted to only viewing them at home as my office PC does not have sound!

Variety is a good thing I believe though do you thin if you really wanted that one keyword it will still be quicker to just use that one keyword in eveything you were doing or do you think it would quicker to use the variety method?

I guess the variety would be better long term as you would rank well for a viariety of longer keyword combinations, but i’m talking about if you really, really wanted that single word?

Sorry regarding my post up above- I keep forgetting that this is one of the few sites I read that does not have the keywordluv plugin which I use regularly – for some reason it stores these details and then I go ahead an post then it is too late.

So firstly – would you consider offering an option to edit posts?

And secondly – would you consider the keywordluv plugin?

Nice work reinforcing variety… sometimes it’s too easy to get stuck in a rut with link building… doing the same thing over and over again. Mix it up!

DragonBlogger, thanks for stopping by, I see you figured out how to post video.

Olly, in general we don’t recommend using one word keyword phrases because even if you do rank for them, they frequently are way too general and will result in a boat load of un-qualified traffic. We do double words, Triple words, and then maybe good singular words.

JBO, I’ll look into using the Keyword Pluggin, sounds like it might make things a bit easier.

Rossbren, YW..hope it helps.

FP, I believe going after the long tail helps with the more competitive words.

Neolight, directories are great, but I suggest using both free and paid. Paid submissions generally have more cached links. Oh, interesting product you are selling…think it could help me?

Gerald, a few premium submissions don’t hurt..but do be choosy…I would only choose one where I could not get a cached link unless it was premium and usually only ones that are really inexpensive.(under $25)

Nicole, yes Variety is my mantra..I’ll expand on the mantra this week hopefully.

Goran, yes one of my wife’s favorite phrases is “due dilligence”, research being key part.

Spreading links back to different pages in your website helps with a wider choice of relevant Keywords to work with.

ha ha — well why? You appear to have a nice thick goatee! (Seriously…. I don’t know about hair, truthfully, although I have been swayed that it helps skin to heal)
Thank you for the advice on the paid directories — I guess you have to ‘pay to play’ to some extent. I’ll search this site to see if you’ve already recommended some specific paid directories, thanks again.

Nice tips Adam. I believe variety is very important to have a backlink profile that looks natural. And that variety will help us rank for a good number of keywords if done right.

I am working on a client project where the top ranking site has just over 1,000 backlinks. Only 70 of their competitor’s backlinks, as reported by Yahoo Site Explorer, have their primary keyword in the anchor text. Using a different strategy, I should be able to compete with their position in six to nine months.

Variety is also important to reduce the possibility of triggering any filters or algorithm red flags. Without varying our backlinks, Google may actually think we are using some sort of Google Bombing technique.

It get pretty complicated when you’re moving from “basic SEO” to just beginning with the long list that you provide. I agree variety is a good idea, diversification might not always be that great when investing, but it’s a safe bet for SEO as the returns are just grouped.

Time is really what it takes. Thanks for the awesome post.

Changing anchors is a must if you don’t want to create a Google Bomb. I know a lot of fellas who got penalized because they used the same anchor over and over again.

If you are too lazy, do some articles and post them on article directories to get different anchors for your blogs.

Great advice on link building. I am bad about not always varying the capitals with the lower case. But I have heard that Google is now making a difference in them for searches.

also use some non related words as anchor text- your name for example when commenting on others people posts. I think it looks more “natural” to the search engines

Great tip. Google seems to look at variety as a testimate of being natural. I should probably start doing a better job of mixing it up. I tend to focus on one kind of link building for a couple months and then switch it up.

I can see your getting the odd spam comment because your using keywordluv. I feel your pain mate…using Bad Behavior and Akismet at least kills off the obvious spammers :p
