Wordpress Update and Merry Christmas

Posted by Pixelhead

Last week I updated Wordpress. In so doing the settings were changed and the link structure setting was changed to custom, where previously it was set to the date-name structure, so anytime a visitor or myself tried to visit a post, the result was a page not found.  After being frustrated by the host support, I decided to do a little tooling around this morning in the updated WP back office, and I realized the link structure setting was different. One click and voila it was fixed.

I also noticed prior to this incident that when I tried to get to the blog, occasionally I would be redirected to the home page…I believe Paul of Newhomesection sent me an email telling me had similar results. And thanks to the  Marbella Spain Real Estate site blogger who notified me as well. My webhost said that there was a redirect in the HT access file. Got to hate when that happens.

Hmm..still seems to be redirecting to the homepage..I deactivated the “comment relish” pluggin which is a pluggin that sends a thankyou email to first time commentors…that may have done the trick.

Well at any rate, I had a little vacation from the blog and am now back in full swing. Until my current host has the one click update to Wordpress 2.7, I should be groovy.

Since the holidays are fast approaching, this will also serve to be my Merry Christmas

Ice on our trees out front..nice sunset.blog post. I have been posting pictures for the 2008 Christmas Season on Flickr, if you wish to check out my pics, just click on the ice picture to the right. Until my next next post, I wish everyone a blessed holiday if you are celebrating it. Be safe, ttyl.

I am glad to see you have successfully upgraded WP to newest version. Big upgrades like current one can sometimes be a pain, and some glitches can bring you headache.
I guess you still have some small fixes to do. In Mozilla Firefox 3.0, there is a noticeable blank space (about 200pxs in height) in sidebar between Top Commentators and Identification fields. Check that out, i guess it’s a small problem, it looks like something is missing over there.

Upgrading WP is such a pain especially if you have multiple blogs. I wish they could make it a single click process.

Frankly, I and some of my friends are having major problems with the upgrades. I have half a mind to revert simply to 2.6.5.

Merry Christmas to you too.

I am a little weary of upgrading to 2.7 as I heard it had at least one security issue.

Merry Christmas Adam to both you and your family! May it be as though you were 5 again. :)

I didn’t have any problems upgrading 3 blogs to WP 2.7. I like the new UI, but I really like the ability to auto-install plugins and allow anonymous comments via the XML-RPC API.

Could you describe the screen you are discussing in a bit more detail? I want to write down my current settings before I upgrade. Thank you!

David, If you go to “settings” then choose “permalinks” and then view your current link structure to know what it currently is set up. You could also just check the site structure by clicking into a post and noting the url. Like the one for this post has the date then the title. When I updated to Wp2.6 it changed it to “custom”.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the heads up and info on this change.

One tip you might find useful if you are not already using it is to use google’s webmaster tools since it will browse your whole blog and check for any bad links. You can easily detect a problem that way even if there is content you don’t go back and check yourself ever. It’s very useful, I had a problem where wordpress starting killing my site prefix in my links so some articles had relative links from their pages working, but not working if they were viewed under a tag or search page.

LOL, I took a lot of grief because of the lack of quality of the shirt. The up side was that we have received over 200 visitors from that post. You should defiantly send a shirt if you get around to it. Hope you had a great Christmas and your New Year is just as good! Thanks for the props! ;)

Paul, Nice, and I am sure you will get some nice link juice from his site.

Mike, thanks for the tip, I’ll check it out.

Pear, Thanks for letting me know, I guess I am not the only one that happened too.

I’m also waiting to upgrade my blogs to 2.7 until my host updates their fantastico. I tried upgrading one time manually and somehow corrupted my database, I’m never dealing with that again. That’s for sure.

@Frank: you should try the auto upgrade plugin, upgrading will be a breeze.. here: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wordpress-automatic-upgrade/ with a few clicks, your wordpress files will be backed up, database will be backed up and plugins will be deactivated, wordpress files upgraded and plugins activated again… all within a few minutes!

I have no problem installing WP 2.7 even with Comment Relish plugin. I’m not sure what the problem is. Hope your blog problem is solved now. Enjoy your holidays

Frank, have you ever tried the automatic wordpress update plugin? I’ve been using it for the last 5 or 6 upgrades (ln at least 10 different blogs) and it has worked perfectly every single time.

If you changed the link structure (friendly URL settings), you may want to redirect the old URL to the new URL so Google knows where the pages moved to (which helps with Google traffic). There might be a Wordpress plugin for this. Otherwise, search for “301 Redirect” to learn how.

This year alone i had to upgrade wordpress atleast 3 timesm, the task becomes daunting when a bunch of your favourite plugins or themes stop working :(
