Need a Job? Start a blog!

Posted by Pixelhead

Liz Strauss post A 5-Step Plan for Work in a Time of No Jobs and 25 Services that Could Be Sold Separately inspired me to create this post. The video is a bit long winded, so I’ll try and summarize the points I was trying to make. Oh, I came to Liz’s post via Joe’s post This Weeks Helpful Reads… Week 139.

Summary Notes

In this economy, jobs are really hard to come by. Even the low paying jobs like dish washers are competitive. I am suggesting that that anyone who is in the job market, should start a blog to help get a job.  Posts on your blog could include:

If I were trying to get a job in the field of SEO(I am not), I would visit and get involved on all the SEO sites like SEOroundtable, SEOMoz, Sphinn and the like. The point is you want learn the skill set of the job, you should get involved in the community you want to be a part of…so read other blogs in your prospective niche, and write about topics that will be part of your potential job as well…hey no one says you need to start out as an expert, but you need to start somewhere.

But Blogs are so Stupid!

So you don’t want to put the effort forth to create a blog, you don’t want to write.  Then someone else will, and someone else will get that job. Creating a blog will show potential employers that you are actually very motivated and that you show initiative. Blogging develops communication skills that can carry over into the employment realm.

When Creating Your Blog:

What about you? Are you going to create a blog in the new year? Do you know someone who is out of work?  Send them the link to this post?

Hey Adam,
Thanks for the mention.
You mention that people should blog for various reasons on how to gain experience and show their expertise. I would like to add that those looking for employment should also consider that their blog could serve very well as an online resume and when applying for that special position they can point the potential employer to their blog as a reference.
Just a thought. I does work.

Really great idea. I’ve been blogging for a little over 2 years now about stuff I find on the Internet. Being an expert on silly stuff on the Internet isn’t in itself that useful, but it keeps me up on happenings around the world and different cultures. I’ve also had the opportunity to interact with a lot of other people doing the same (as you said…. networking). I’ve heard arguments to the contrary, but I feel blogging helps out in more than ways than you’d initially expect.

Definitely don’t start a blog to make money…not initially. There are so many things to learn in the beginning, and many things you learn through experience. Start a dummy blog first with the goal of learning, and then plan out your REAL blog. I guess touch your toes in the water without committing yourself to some possible, permanent mistakes (such as adding a domain name and having to worry about all the links and backlinks)

I would add that running a blog has enriched my perspective of the world in general. I’ve only been running my blog for almost a year and the number of people I’ve befriended across the world is amazing. It’s really worth it if you like a good challenge.

Joe, I like the idea of your blog being an online resume. How about adding a page that is your resume?

Brian, Oh I am sure the list of ways it can help you is quite extensive.

Make Your Own Tshirt, it does and can provide a decent part-time income, but as I said, I would not suggest doing it for the dinero.

Wayne, I myself started quite a few Dummy blogs on both Wordpress.com and Blogger.com. I really wish I had started our travel blog on its own url. The others I really don’t do much with anymore, but they are still out there.

Property Investment, it could be considered an investment, but I would not start one thinking it would be your sole means of support immediately. But it is a nice little piece of supplemental income that does have residual income.

One can also mention the blog on resumes to give reference to one’s interests, writing skill sets and commitments.

Writing a blog might be profitable, but it needs a person that knows how to write and loves it. I myself don’t like writting and started a blog 2 years ago, I stopped at about 20th post, which visitors mostly around 2-4 a day.

Easily said. I’m sure many will start blogging as their supplement income but in 09, blogging income could be main for some who lost their job. Recession is at our doorstep and in some country like Singapore, it has already begun.

Owning/running a blog is a lot of work, but the rewards seem endless. I have met a lot of interesting GOOD people through blogging and have managed to make some money along the way. The internet is a great way to meet people with similar interests even if you never meet them face to face. Blogger who have supported things that I have done and bloggers that I would support in a heart beat. Not what you know but who you know, isn’t that what they say. ;)

Besides it is a great hobby that is relatively inexpensive to start and maintain. If some here starts or has a blog feel free to email me and I’ll stumble over and check it out.

Happy New Year Everybody!!!

Good advice. However, those who need a job and start a blog should consider that the blog may not earn money for a while. But when it does, the money will continue to roll in even after the author stops posting to the blog.

Interesting article. I’ve never heard of the concept of using a blog to position yourself to get a job. Love to see some of these types of blogs to see how people put something like this together and if it works. Thank so this unique post.

True – a blog allows people to research you before making contact.
If you consider that a potential client / Boss / contact already knows quite a bit about you then the fact they have contacted you is your chance to wow them without having to harp on about past experience.

Read other blogs in your prospective niche is a very good idea.
I am not sure potential employers will have the time to read a Blog like that. But it is true that in some cases it may be able to earn some money from advertising. Thanks for the new idea.

James, I agree that prospective employers probably won’t read your blog, but they would or could find out about it via your resume or from someone else who was reading it and referred them to it. Say you have a blog in the fashion niche, when the employer of a fashion magazine asks what have you been working on lately, would it not be better to tell him that you have been researching the top fashions and writing about it on your site Sharyourfashions.net rather than just sitting at home doing squat.

A blog is a great way to show what you have to offer. I do think that if part of your strategy is to help your career that you should have a specific location discussing that. You blog will likely have tons of content and is not likely to specifically address the skills you offer for an employer. The blog can help give you legitimacy but a career focused page or two, along with a resume, would probably also be wise.

I think to define the strategy of the blog is not so easy, the problem is beginning to start a blog, having got some experience in bloggosphere one should determine the appropriate stuff and develop the necessary skills.

Write your way out of it! That is the motto of a very brave lady that literally wrote her way out of the lemons life had dished her up.

Not everybody may have the necessary writing skills, but it is a great idea to start a blog to give you that extra edge in the job market. So if you think you can do it, you most propably are able to. Go for it, you have nothing to lose!
