Need a Job? Start a blog!
Posted by Pixelhead
Liz Strauss post A 5-Step Plan for Work in a Time of No Jobs and 25 Services that Could Be Sold Separately inspired me to create this post. The video is a bit long winded, so I’ll try and summarize the points I was trying to make. Oh, I came to Liz’s post via Joe’s post This Weeks Helpful Reads… Week 139.
Summary Notes
In this economy, jobs are really hard to come by. Even the low paying jobs like dish washers are competitive. I am suggesting that that anyone who is in the job market, should start a blog to help get a job. Posts on your blog could include:
- Interview those in the field you wish to be employed to learn about the duties, and training that is required.
- Journal about your job hunting efforts.
- Top 10 places or companies you would like to work.
- Top 10 jobs you would like.
- Least favorite jobs.
- Least favorite places to work…I sure would hate to work at a prison.
- Write about job interviewing skills. This may require you to do a bit of research, but I am sure it will make you better at interviewing.
- Top 10 things to do or not to do on a job interview.
- Write about your desired position to include what duties you have learned are part of the job.
- Write about certain tasks that you can perform which would make you a great candidate for the position.
If I were trying to get a job in the field of SEO(I am not), I would visit and get involved on all the SEO sites like SEOroundtable, SEOMoz, Sphinn and the like. The point is you want learn the skill set of the job, you should get involved in the community you want to be a part of…so read other blogs in your prospective niche, and write about topics that will be part of your potential job as well…hey no one says you need to start out as an expert, but you need to start somewhere.
But Blogs are so Stupid!
So you don’t want to put the effort forth to create a blog, you don’t want to write. Then someone else will, and someone else will get that job. Creating a blog will show potential employers that you are actually very motivated and that you show initiative. Blogging develops communication skills that can carry over into the employment realm.
When Creating Your Blog:
- Be professional, look professional, sound professional, and write professionally. No bad language, no skimpy bikini clad pictures…be aware of your online reputation at all times.
- Create the blog to position yourself as an authority in your field or at least to position yourself to be a top candidate for the job you want.
- Lastly, in so creating your blog, you may actually be able to earn some money from advertising, paid blogging posts, and programs like Google Adsense. However, I would caution you to not create a blog for money, but to do it for the potential knowledge that you can gain. The learning comes first, then the dinero.
What about you? Are you going to create a blog in the new year? Do you know someone who is out of work? Send them the link to this post?

Hey Adam,
Thanks for the mention.
You mention that people should blog for various reasons on how to gain experience and show their expertise. I would like to add that those looking for employment should also consider that their blog could serve very well as an online resume and when applying for that special position they can point the potential employer to their blog as a reference.
Just a thought. I does work.
