Swag from SES NY

Posted by Pixelhead

SES NY was well over a month ago, and I have yet to do a blog post about it. Cleaning out the SES swag bag(had two), I found a variety of swag items to include;

  1. An SES Convention pocket guide courtesy of Tmp Direct Marketing
  2. March 2009 issue of the SES Mag ..2 copies, mine and Lizzies.Baldydog and SES NY Swag
  3. 2 Brafton news feeds advertisment.
  4. An add for a Google Adwords meeting on March 25th…sorry missed it.
  5. An add for Adside Premium pay-per-click ad network.(2 copies)
  6. Three crappy pens from GlobalCollect an online payment service that ran out after several pages of notes.
  7. Four crappy notepads from GlobalCollect whose pages came off immediately and resulted in my notes being totally messed up.
  8. 1 ad for Microsoftadvertising.com
  9. 2 Icontact email marketing ads
  10. A nice looking ad from SEOSamba…love the iguana. (2 copies)
  11. An addendum fro SES about the speakers for the convention.

  13. 2 SEMJ.org issues.
  14. 3 copies of the BS annoucement of the winners of the 2008 annual SEO & PPC competition..I wonder how much you need to pay TopSEO’s to be on the list?
  15. 1 Visibility Magazine, the magazine for Online marketing strategies.
  16. 2 copies of Overdrive Interactive’s Social  Media Map..this is pretty cool.

My favorite pieces of swag include the two bags and the social media map.

60 SES NY Notes

(skip to the end–its all bs)

I forgot to bring a decent notepad to write on so I had to use the crappy pads provided by GlobalCollect…every page came off of the pad and my notes got hopelessly disorganized. Lets see if I can make them into something that could be of use to someone else besides me:

What did I get out of SES NY?

  1. We(Lizzie and I) learned that the bus terminal is at the Port Authority.  We took a taxi to the Penn Station and then had to wait in the rain for another taxi to take us to the Port Authority.
  2. Found out about Womma.org..sounds like a groovy organization.
  3. Discovered the so called experts are no smarter than I.
  4. Do good.
  5. Next time I go to SES, I will be presenting.
  6. Found a place that has the most awesome sandwich…a pastrami sandwich with two plate sized potato pancakes as the bread.
  7. If you are only attending the last day of SES, since the vendor area is done the second to last day, you need to go sometime before the end of the 2nd to last day to get the good SES swag. A 700 dollar swag bag was the highlight of SES NY.

Well, you learned more from it than I did. All the pushy salesmen always cause me to turn my brain off when they’re talking…

Ok, I don’t normally print out posts, but I am printing out yours right now because there is lots of great information, I appreciate you taking notes for those of us that couldn’t be there.

From the sound of if, it seems like social media is HUGE right now in online marketing. Who would have thought that Youtube would beat out Yahoo for number two.

All eyes on Twitter too it seems.

Yea, it seems like all of the presenters were giving out their twitter profiles..more than one presenter promised to not mention twitter more than once.

I really think it will benefit you. Lizzie seemed to get more out of it than I did. I might not have been picking out the right sessions. I stayed mainly on the Social Media track…but when you talk with your clients it looks good to them that you are staying up with the latest tech.

I like your cutting to the bone note taking technique! The speak no evil point is one that I wholeheartedly agree with. It will come back to haunt you in one way or another, so rather try eliminate it from your personal and business doings altogether.

Great post overall, but I’d like to address what really struck me there. In “what did I get out of SES NY” you mention that you discovered the so called experts are no smarter than You. How true is that! It’s a serious issue, I know of at least 3 cases when people that had good ideas for startups or an ad campaign started reading about it and finally decided not to do it. Why ? Because when they hit all these experts blogs, they were overwhelmed and felt inferior, felt that with a competition like that there is no point in trying.
In reality most of these gurus are regular folk with some experience in the field. There are geniuses and there are assholes, it all depends on the person. But they are not “better” or “smarter” so don’t get discouraged!

Thanks for this. I was able to attend the SES in San Jose back in 2007, but was never able to attend any others. Lists like yours is helpful for us to be able to keep on top of what’s going on, and thanks for this. Looking forward to your next tips from the next SES show.

I keep on wondering about the YouTube videos (#52). I have posted a couple but I just don’t know how much they are worth for SEO work. A lot of people are starting to say that video links are being rated high after Google redid their crawlers.

Thanks for the notes, I’ve yet to attend a conference, but it’s on the to-do list. It looks like there’s a lot to gain from going – swag and info.

It’s amazing how many SEO channels are available today, I hate it when often expert bloggers pull out a list of 100 different things to do, it takes a huge amount of time and effort to even use a few of those techniques effecively, a lot of these pro bloggers and leading sites pretend to be a homegrown thing – when they are simply not
