Site Was Down

Posted by Pixelhead

Just a little note. I am actually in Maine for a wedding but I needed to get this quick post out. The site had actually been down for well over 3 days due to some errors from the hosting company…will be changing hosts…They were unable to find out why the site was redirecting to a gambling site.
Numerous emails and phone calls later, I finally got a supervisor on the line today, and he promised me he would call me back when the site was up and running.

3 days is a long time.

I was quite irritated with the host, and we have actually already switched the site over to a new host, and will be switching all our other sites over as well.  This level of incompetence is just unacceptable.

Today, I got a text from a friend asking me if his site was down. I checked and low and behold it was redirecting to one of our medical directories.  Well actually it was redirecting to the blog of said directory which is inactive.

I am unsure of what other action will follow, but I am very greatful that all the sites are back and running and nothing was lost.

The previous post, Adding a Business to the Google Map, was written on Wednesday and was suppose to be published then. That is when I found out the site was down.

What a bummer. Glad to see your site is back up. Care to share what host you were with? I’m shopping for a good host right now after other problems with my host.

Things like this really happens, and its too bad knowing that it redirected to a gambling site.

Your site reputation will surely get affected. But good to hear that all are back to normal.

Another good reference to the value of a proper hosting provider. 99% is just not good enough if you’re trying to run a serious online business / project. Good luck with the new host, and please share your recommendations for effective hosting providers with us.

Sorry to hear about your site that is a bummer. I wish I was able to catch it but I haven’t been blogging for a little bit. Side note wondering what you think about bing.com and if it is going to change SEO to decision engine marketing? My site never really ranked well for msn…

Paul, I know it has gotten a lot of press, but its the traffic that will really count. If I see my sites getting any traffic from it, then I will consider optimizing for it. I had a number of sites that ranked well for msn, but got only a small amount of traffic…so small that I stopped including msn on client ranking reports.

I don’t suppose you use 3ix.com for you hosting, do you? I have had major problems with them in the past. As much as I hate to admit it, godaddy is pretty sweet.

Not a fan of Godaddy either, but no I don’t use 3ix.com…I am looking at various hosts and will be doing a test on one this week, which might determine who I switch to.

It feels like Internet is becoming more unsecure place. I also had a problem with one of my websites, and my identity of facebook was stolen, too. Anybody else with this problem?

Can you offer any of us tips on how to investigate new hosting services and identifying their reliability levels? It seems a lot of us have had similar issues, but I”m not sure how to avoid going from one problemprovider to another.

More often than not it’s a hacker who has modified .htaccess files. This was only used by malware distributing guys but increasing it’s being used for traffic and SEO :-(

One of my hosts got hit by this and needless to say all blogs hosted on that machine were probably affected.

Back to Fluena’s comment, security really is important. Hackers can not only add links but steal important information from your hosting company. Before anyone chooses a hosting company, they should check to see if they’ve been black listed.

Oi! Three days is just totally unacceptable, and the fact that your traffic was being directed at a gambling site just makes it even less so! Good for you on changing hosting service providers. What factors did you take into consideration when making your choice of new host?

Hosting is very important. You host with the wrong company and your entire operations can go under in one afternoon. I’m fortunate to have a very reliable free hosting provider. Been with them for over a year and haven’t had a problem yet.

Wow that’s pretty poor service on the hosting companies part, it should be back up and running within the hour. Thought hosts were supposed to take snap shots of sites so that in the unfortunate event of anything going down they can quickly retried their clients sites. maybe it would be good to do a post at some point about readers hosting companies and their experiences and form a chart of recommendations.

I find it to be such a minefield finding good hosting. With all the promises that look good on the surface. The 99% uptime promise always makes me laugh, allowing for over 7 hours of downtime every month.

For that reason I always go VPS or dedicated with uptime monitoring these days if possible. It is reassuring to know that your host isn’t going to be taking the server on and offline when they want and that in the rare event anything does go wrong, a reboot request is sent to the datacenter.

I use a small hosting company who only host about 50 sites. I think its best to go with smaller site becasue the support is faster and friendlier. That’s my personal view!

@Minnestoa Attorney: ya, the moment I run a moderatly CPU hungry script (drupal thingies, especially) I get an error 500. Now, I wasn’t expecting a dedicated mainframe for $15, but this is laughable.

what hosting company do you use? i’ve never heard of any hosting company that any one is happy with, either their servers our down, or people can get hold of customer support after their services is done, so it ends up being down for the same amount of time

I just started using 1and1..a friend who uses them, asked me to do some work on his site. I had to call 1and1’s tech support, and was very happy with the service I received. They are pretty big, so I would be surprised if their servers were down much. The only think I don’t like is that they don’t use a cpanel.

Avoid 1and1
For instance search for my new main domain rabeuf.fr
I just see Windows2008 running one hour on the machine i rent july 15
Still waiting for reload
Support told me (phone call I paid) that they do not administrate
They just plug cable and AC

I’ve been using 1and1 for a few years now. Their domain registration prices were the best when I started, but their prices have increased to the point where they are now more expensive than many others. Their tech support has been very frustrating, sometimes waiting on the phone for over 2 hours before speaking with someone.

The 1and1 Transfers department is what sent me over the edge. I asked them to set my domains so they would not automatically renew. First, they failed to do this, seemingly ignoring my request after they emailed me to confirm it, which resulted in $1000 bill for renewal of domain names I didn’t want renewed (I am still waiting to see if they issue a refund). Second, when they did finally act on my request, they canceled the domain names rather than set them to not renew. When I emailed them about the problem, they ignored it. Over 1000 of my websites were down for three weeks despite me sending multiple emails asking for them to fix their error and restore the websites. They didn’t respond for three weeks. Finally they said they were working on the issue, but it still has not been resolved. Needless to say, this type of service cannot be tolerated when I rely on websites for business income.

I am leaving 1and1 and moving to HostGator for hosting and Moniker for domain name registration.

Good that your site is online now. I know how it irritates. You loose a lot of your visitors/money and you just can’t do nothing but phone hosting support. I belive that good support is most important when you buy hosting (I always advise to check if it is available 24h a day).
