Cherry Mash Needs SEO

Posted by Pixelhead

On the way home from my recent trip to Amarillo TX, I discovered Cherry Mash, which is a very unique candy that is only available in the mid west at this point in time. I made the Cherry Mash video below to get the word out about the tasty candy that has an almos cult like following in the mid-west.

Thanks to Chris the Video Production intern for filming the video and whose video skills far out way my own. I am sure Chris was not satisfied with the quality of the video, but I have a policy of only doing my home made videos in one take, after all I am only an amatuer.

Cherry Mash Needs SEO

Looking at the CherryMash site, I realize the candy site is a bit dated, but I also noticed that they have a PR5 on the Cherry Mash History page, and they also rank well for a few of their target keywords.

CherryMash.com Stats

Why is CherryMash.com a good Candidate for SEO

Cherrymash.com is has a really high PR, and is somewhat of an authority in the candy industry, having somewhat of a cult following. It seems to be a candy that you either love it or hate it. Those who love it, it seems often have a hard time locating the cherry flavored candy. I read online that they often have recipes that involve Cherry Mash as the primary key ingriedent.

Since it does have such a high PR and is over 8 years old, it would respond well in the SERPs if it were to undergo an SEO campaign.

To get a larger portion of Candy market share, they should expand their internet influence to other keyword areas.

Have you heard of CherryMash?

Why is CherryMash.com a good Candidate for SEO – I think he can be one of the biggest gurus in SEO. Everyone can be, it is a matter of time and learning. ;) Same with CherryMash.com.

If they have a good following in the mid-west they should update and do some SEO for their site to “extend the trend” Ha that could be part of your pitch to them… Hey CherryMash you need to extend the trend and go nation wide with your delicious candy! lol I will be your pitchman lol

I love how you break down the analysis of why they would respond well to SEO. Is it in particular because their Page Rank is already high? What would you suggest if their page rank had been lower, such as a 2?

I would suggest about the same thing, however, it would probably require a lot more time to achieve the same results. Also, due to the high PR, other sites are always much more willing to link to them.

Moving CherryMash higher in the SERP’s might be easier if they start by focusing on local directories for the MidWest, such as Yahoo! Local, Google Maps, etc. That would allow them to build on their local success and begin developing links for national searches as well.

I’ve got a notoriously sweeth tooth, and am glad that Cherry Mash Candy is not available in my neck of the woods, as I wouldn’t be able to control myself with the stuff!

From an internet marketing perspective they are in the pound seats too, and a bit of link building and on page optimization will really boost them big time.

How much does site maturity impact SEO? Should I register my site before it’s complete for SEO purposes?

Get your own gravatar by visiting gravatar.com Pixelhead
#22. October 7th, 2009, at 6:20 PM.

Site maturity helps to show that a site is an authority…it is a great thing to have a domain that has been out there for a while. That’s why there is a huge market online buying up domains that expire…yes, it doesn’t hurt to register the domain prior to completing it. Just don’t do a ton of link building as many places won’t link to a site that is under construction or parked.

I myself do not like cherry mashes but my mom loves the and it is like you said it is either you love them or hate them. They are a unique candy tho. I would encourage anybody that have not tried them to do so.

From an seo stand point i myself would think that the page would not be to hard to optimize plus if the company is wanting to grow advertising on their behalf would be great for them.

The website has a high PR because it was created a long time ago. A lot of people seem to forget about the aging factor when it comes to google ;)

Anyway, yes it should be easy to rank high with a site like that on google

Thanks for sharing the mental analysis that you go through to determine whether a site is a good candidate for SEO. The years of authority issue is not something that is easily overcome. Only time can change that, but we can work on everything else!

Your analysis of the Cherry Mash site is spot on. I can’t stand it when purported “SEOs” analyze a site and make useless recommendations (in the overall scheme of things) like adding more content. Everything comes down to backlinks. That’s how you get ranked for a term that will turn a profit.

The website itself doesn’t look good. This website need web designer more than SEO expert. However, I know some of the website don’t need SEO. because they don’t targeted the visitors of the website. Website only for online brochure.

Of all the topics surrounding the web, there is one which tops the list from a marketing point of view and it’ s Search Engine Optimisation (aka SEO ). It is indeed one of the most important levers for bringing traffic to a site. I can barely think of a Marketing manager I have bumped into in the past 18 months who isn’ t obsessed with the fact that his products will or will not show in search engines. This is obviously a valid request and a lot of expectations are set on the improvement/ optimisation of web pages to be more search- engine friendly, and a lot of pressure is put on web site owners like yours truly. There is nothing wrong with that though, I believe it all boils down to getting the right explanation across to our managers and explaining what SEO really is and isn’ t about. In essence, it’ s not about cheating; on the contrary, thinking that optimising your site for‘ free products’ when you sell expensive products is not only daft, it’ s pointless. So I won’ t take any of your time debating on whether SEO is cheating because it’ s not. Or at least it’ s not a side of the business that I’ m interested in.

I used to love a good, old school Cherry Mash when I was a kid. Throughout my travels I have found a lot of mom and pop style stores that still carry them, and I always stock up. I liked lookign at the Cherry Mash website, though I totally agree that it needs an overhaul. It has a unique, throwback feel that could still be preserved while applying more modern aesthetics, accessibility, and marketing techniques into the sites design. Even something as simple as a user board or forum that would allow fans of the candy to swap stories while at the same time increasing the site’s web (and SEO) presence would be a nice addition.

If it has a cult following someone should create an iPhone app that finds stores where Cherry Mash is sold. Is it so popular because it is so hard to find or is it that good? It sure looks good in that video!

Every website is a good candidate for SEO :) But if you have 8,5 years old domain and start too aggressive SEO campaign you risk the over optimization penalty. It would look unnaturally if you build 96 links in 8,5 years and now you get the same number of links in a few weeks.

No, never heard from them..I don’t think that CherryMash is very active online. I noticed that their site was down one day because their hosting had not been renewed. I gave them a call to let them know about the problem, and I got an email from a guy from another marketing company thanking me…they might need to upgrade their IT as well. But I doubt they will. As many small companies tend to be very cautious with their advertising dollars.
