Does Steve Carell Love Hooters?

Posted by Pixelhead

When I take my son to hockey at the BodyZone in Reading, I frequently pass by the Reading Hooters. While sitting at the traffic light, I got my camera out and made this quick little video.
I wonder if Hooters pays Steve Carell for this advertising.

Inspite of Michael’s negative buffoon type character, I think the branding for Hooters is mostly positive.

Do you watch The Office? What do you think about the use of this type of advertising? Is it effective?

I think this type of advertising is effective. I personally get tired of blatant advertising but what else are they going to do with TIVO…I guess that’s why I don’t watch regular TV anymore. Funny post!

The office is one of my favorite shows on right now. The character Michael on the show cracks me up when he is in their restaurant.

I think this kind of advertising is even more effective than T.V. commercials. Especially because this is someones opinion (even if he is getting paid…) and not just the “brand” telling us how awesome they are! Am I right?

Paul, yea, a lot of times, he is almost painful to watch. Steve does an amazing job of making him look stupid.

Compared to any form of advertisement, I find this one as the most effective. Testimonials from other people really count when customers make their choices.

Michael Scott talks about Chili’s too, like when they host the Dundies there. There’s gotta be some reason why they use actual restaurant names instead of making up their own for the show. By the way, did you say David Koresh instead of Steve Carell in the video? It sounded like it to me… two very different people haha.

Hey Pixelhead,

I am sure you would know this. Nowadays corporate interactive agencies and ad companies are welcoming these type of ads. Have you seen the ads that air on TV for dove, maggi.. etc.., Infact they had a competition which goes like this. Shoot a 30 sec video and say how much you love their product and send it to them, if its pleasing and excellent then it will be aired live on tv.. So I think you should find the agent of hooters to get your video aired :) All the best.

Living With Crohns, you get the gold star..I was wondering when someone would point that out..yea..doesn’t that seem like a mistake Michael would make..lol…

David Koresh, if you do not know was the leader of the Branch Davidian religious group…not sure what I was thinking..Almost without a doubt, Hooters would probably rather be associated with Steve Carell than David Koresh..

I might have to go and make a new updated Chili’s/Hooters video using the correct name..

Ah Branding….the old trick. Sure this is effective, that is why they have been doing it for years. Imagine if they tried to make up some dumb name for a quasi Hooters restaurant, it wouldn’t be relevant or valid. Branding, when done right, can spice up TV and give it a sense of validity in that it uses real world things that we are confronted with daily. However, when it is over done, it can be harmful to the brand, as it becomes sort of a joke, and one dimensional.

Loved the vid!

I drive by one of these taking my daughter to her dance classes. She asked one day “what does that restaurant have?” Just then we noticed a couple of the white topped, orange shorted workers setting up a message on the Hooters marquis out in front. My fourteen year old then said “oh…I get it.”

I don’t know about him, but if his British counterpart, Ricky Gervais, did something like this, the food chain would get a MASSIVE surge in business.

The potential connection between The Office and Hooters raises another issue. As you probably heard, the FTC is now requiring bloggers with affiliate links to provide certain disclosures. The FTC said that “material connections” between the blogger and an affiliate company must be disclosed. (See http://ftc.gov/opa/2009/10/endortest.shtm). This makes me wonder whether product placements and other subtle advertising within television shows, like The Office, should be disclosed to viewers.

It is possible. There are many ways of advertising that we are not aware of. The alternative forms of advertisement is something very popular last years, especially with spreading popularity of world wide web. I think that this will go forward and become even more popular than writing funny writings on the wall :)

Well, Hooters probably couldn’t buy much more effective advertising than frequent mentions on “The Office.” You gotta love product placements, don’t you? ;-)

Of all the restaurant chains out there, it would be nice if the one that was getting all the free publicity didn’t have to be Hooters.
