What are Twitter Lists?

If you have not been on your Twitter account lately, you should be aware of Twitter Lists, which is the new feature that Twitter just released last week. This is the feature that allows the Twitter user to create groups. Twitter Logo

Lists enable the user to group users according to any variable that they choose. Some Examples:

Geographic locations(Philly Bloggers)
Occupations (Web Developers)
Family(My family and friends Twitter accounts)
Work(business contacts)
Hobbies(mountain biking)

The uses are limitless.

Lists can be both public and private. You don’t need to follow someone to add them to a list. Adding profiles to a private list does not let them know that they are on the list, but adding a profile to a public allows the profile to see that they are included on a list. Twitter takes the word privacy serious.

When would I want to use a private list?

keep track of my competition.
Using Twitter for research that you may want to keep private.
Keep all your amorous profiles secret.
Keep your family profiles secret.
If you are ghost Tweeting, you can create a list of the profiles that you tweet on to have easy access to the stats.

Got an idea for a list, then create your list and then add profiles.

If you get added to a list, follow the list.
When you are added to a list, your Tweets will show up on the Twitter list stream.
If someone adds you to a cool list, not a list of “jerks”, then you might want to consider not only following the list, but also consider following the person.
If you go to http://twitter.com/goodies/widgets you can get widgets that allow you to show lists as well as the standard Twitter stuff.

Found the solution elsewhere. Yes, they can be removed. If they don’t come off immediately now, just unblock and reblock them. I finally got 20+ people off my list doing that yesterday. This morning, I blocked them once and they were gone.

I am loving twitter lists, It is so much easier to find certain tweeps in a particular niche and also is a great way to gauge how popular someone is.

Moving Checklist, you don’t join a list, you can follow a list. But to be added to a list, the profile that started the list must add you to it.

I really need to get on top of my twitter campaigns. I just struggle justifying the time it takes to implement anything other than tweeting and retweeting. I see minimal traffic from twitter even when I fully engage, and eve if I manage a few hundred visitors the traffic is never profitable.

Oh You cant remove them because they will still be counted as followers but when you block them they cant send you messages or anything so thats good:)!

One tip I would add, don’t get carried away and start following a bunch of lists. I started following all sorts of lists and after awhile my profile started to look really spammy with way more follows than followers.

You could make a list of all your favorite people on twiiter and the list name would be “My Fav Followers” or something like that.

When the Lists feature suddenly appeared one day, I had wondered what it was about, though I figured it out quickly enough. All I can say is that I greatly appreciate any feature that makes it easier to sort through the ever-swelling sea of followers and followed. Unless you follow only a very limited number of people, it’s next to impossible to keep track of their tweets without some means of organizing and categorizing them.

Speaking of new features, why the heck has it taken them so long to address the ability (or lack thereof) to send automatic retweets via Twitter itself, instead of having to resort to another application (e.g. TweetDeck)?

I think the twitter’s new feature of lists is quite useful and help target your followers on Twitter for better marketing. Twitter is very popular site and quite simple. I would like to see more useful features to be added to Twitter.

“Twitter lists” is best feature released by Twitter. There are two options one is “lists following you” and “lists you follow”. Lists following you show you the number of lists you are on, while “lists you follow” is obviously the number of lists you have followed.

I just signed up in Twitter this morning and I am so happy i found this. I felt a bit awkward there at first cause I feel like a stranger .. I dont know lots about Twitter but my friends sends me invites and I wanna get on it too!
