Blog Comments – How to Leave Blog Comments that Get Published

Posted by Pixelhead

I really love getting comments that add to the conversation. And sure I like to hear that my blog is great, what blogger doesn’t. However,  I don’t publish comments that don’t pertain to the blog post, the comment was left on.

How to Get Your Blog Comments Published

If you have read my commentators guidelines you know that I generally don’t like to publish comments for sites that don’t have either an active blog or a forum.  Occasionally, if the comment is really good, I will publish the comment…frequently, I don’t. If you don’t have a blog, then be sure to leave an awesome comment if you want it published.

If you want to compliment me, feel free to do so, but leave it at the end or the beginning of a relavant comment.

Well, that is enough of my rant on crappy comments.

What Do You Think?

Do you have commenting guidelines on your blog? If you don’t have a blog,  do you think commenting guidelines are good?

Hey man, great post….. uh ….. what did you write about again…. any way keep up the great work!

I really like to get comments on my site(s), but I do moderate “heavily” and try to weed out the bad ones that are just looking for a link (shh – do-follow) and I do have some readers that don’t speak/write great english, luckily they have connected with me on other social sites as well and I recognize their site or email address or they wouldn’t make it through either…

If you don’t have anything of actual value to add, then why bother commenting, the links aren’t that good anyway and your time would be better spent creating some community on your own site. Just my $.02 (man I am running out of money giving up 2 cents all the time!)

I would agree is it a good Idea to have comment guidelines, but if you do some searching you will find that one factor drives the “crappy comment” problem.

Any blog that is listed “dofollow” has just made itself a target for people trying to increase the number of relevant backlinks to their sites. Google even has a search function that looks for dofollow blogs.

I run a small content writing, backlink creating service, and I can promise you the majority of bad or spammy comments are coming from people like me or my customers.

Great comment Keith, thanks for leaving your 2cents..I do give bloggers a break that are another language as their primary language, buy correcting grammar errors when I notice them or if I have the inclination.

Yes James, moderating comments for spam on a dofollow blog does take a bit more time.

I too leave comments on blogs for my clients, but I don’t leave crap comments..reputation management is part of our SEO practice, we don’t want any negativity coming back onto our clients, to include being accused of leaving spam comments on blogs.

I am thinking about doing a blog post where I publish the crappy comments and the links(nofolllowed) and I want to make the point in the post that site owners need to insure that their SEO is not spamming blogs with crap comments.

I’ve become a comment Nazi, and if the comment isn’t a true comment, then it gets spam-filed. Sometimes it’s a big judgment call as some of the commentators are pretty good as masking their true intentions, and for that I’d approve a comment. If you at least try to fake it, and it sounds alright and is perhaps something I might reply to, sure. I’d approve that.

Normally I’d require a proper name and a link destination that I don’t mind sending my regular visitors to.

Adam, I was thinking of doing the same thing using a blog to post examples of bad comments. If you plan on setting anything up, let’s talk first. I have some ideas around that very concept. ;)

Cheers!

I too hate crappy comments but I often get no comments on posts so I’ll usually let them in. Askimet handles the spam so that’s not really an issue. It would be nice to have a community of nice bloggers with intelligent comments.

It is hard to expect seeing own comment without saying anything about the topic. It is obvious for me that any answer need to be combined with the question :)

Askimet filters the spam comments so there’s no really have problems with those who comments without relation with the article. We always welcome those who have something to share but there’s a lot of link builders who doesn’t even respect the site.

Hotel99, I believe you should leave comments on a variety of types of blogs, but I think that it is better for you to leave comments on blogs that are more closely related to your niche. You would do better to focus on travel blogs like my travel blog at all-travel-sites.com.

I just pulled this comment from my spam box “Very interesting post. Couldn’t be written any better. Browsing this post reminds me of my old bud. He always kept talking about this. I will send this post to him. Am sure he will have a good chuckle. Thanks for sharing!” This was posted like 4 times on 4 different posts! Or the ones that say how they love the site and they will be sure to bookmark it…

Commenters on your blog may have their comments caught by Akismet. If you do not regularly check your Akismet Panel, have an easy way of allowing readers to email you if their comment did not appear.

Comment guidelines are helpful but bare in mind that the length of the comment does not always indicate the quality of the comment. Sometimes the best comments are pithy.

I have a comment policy on my corporate blog, but yours seems a bit more restrictive. I don’t really care if your link has an active forum or blog… but you can’t have a link to another auto glass company’s web site.

At least, that’s the policy. In truth, even though it’s my competition, I usually let those through.

Other than that, we’re aligned on comment policy.

Having a comment guideline on your blog or website is essential. It just like saying to your audience that you care about everything posted on your blog; may it be on the comment section or on the post itself. Also, it imposes some kind of credibility or authority in my opinion.

People more offen trying to comment on the blog without an proper response to the post as they mainly focusing on keyword promotion to get approved and for juice. This is not the right they must read the post and give the proper comment on those blogs

1) Mainly, is one that is authentic. Your thoughts, your creative background, your interests – there’s only one “you,” so be expressive! I know, that’s corny, but it’s true

I have comment monitoring activated on my website, but unfortunately no one will leave a comment :) Too few visitors I guess.

I was wondering if Google counts the text from the comments section as content for your site? If so the more related comments and keywords used the better. Right?

Also, there are so few dofollow blogs out there do you think it is because site owners are too busy to monitor or are they afraid to dilute the minuscule link juice their Cordless Black and Decker Hammer Drill website has? lol

Thanks for the link (I hope),

Jonathan

well if one owns a blog, then they should know what type of comment they should leave, as obvious as a blogger knows if the comment is meant for spam or it really is a comment based on the article, now those that do not own a blog and pretty much find blogs to comment for a link, then say byebye to the comment,,,,people should understand that bloggers are not stupid, they read, write, and know a spam from a mile away :)

Great post, thanks! No just kidding, LOL!

Keith, it must really annoy you to get these all the time, as 99% of the time they are blatant spam comments that add zero value. I’ve been frequenting your blog for a long time already, and you do manage to keep the neighbourhood tidier than most of the other blogs I’ve visited. Kudos to you for keeping the standards up, and here’s to a continued clean neighbourhood.

I love your blog, do keep up the good work….no, really ;-)

All the best

Above mentioned points are very helpful for me and gives good information about how to post a comment and how to be specific for that blog. Most of the people does commenting for getting back link, but this is also not good, because they comments with their keyword its like a spam and as result of this their blog owner remove their comment from their blog.

I hate the comments that spammers leave when they auto jumble words together and the statement that they made makes absolutely no sense… then they stuff a keyword in the comment like that is not going to get flagged!

Well in the blog commenting world there are two types of people: The ones who are interested in the blog itself, and the ones who are promoting something of interest to them. It seems as though more and more of the blog comments are made by people promoting their own business. Either way, they should still pick something of personal interest even if it does not have relevance to their promoting site. Only then would Blogs be very informative.

Great post sir! I learned new things by reading your article. Nowadays, spammers are everywhere and they leave comments on your blogs that is not related to the article posted and worst, they bombed you with anchor texts. Anyways great blog sir and I am an avid follower of your blog. Keep posting more good and interesting stuff .:D

This doesn’t work always. There are many bloggers out there who just don’t want to give link juice no matter how informative your comment is.So the comment will get deleted if you will leave a link. This happened with me many a times.

Christa, I normally don’t publish comments for sites that don’t have a blog( you really should), but I thought your comment was pretty orginal, and your site looks like it has a lot of potential for an ecommerce site. You should make a blog out of your digital recorders review articles…just a thought.

Relevence to the post is the most important consideration. Posting such comments as “nice blog”, “cool post”…etc is just spammy. You need to add depth and volume to the comment. Christa is right in saying “There are many bloggers out there who just don’t want to give link juice no matter how informative your comment is.” but I guess this is something you just have to put up with because there are bloggers out there like this guy who will leave your comment in place provided it follows the guidelines above, i.e. no spam. Informative post that I hope many people read as I see countless spam comments as it’s really quite annoying.

There’s no issue in promoting your own business as long as you are contributing to the blog you’re commenting on.

I have a number of blogs in different niches, and use the free wp-spamfree plugin on all of them. I find that it is very effective in blocking the worst spam comments.

At this stage I haven’t posted comment guidelines on any of my blogs, but it is certainly something I will think about.

The sad reality is that there will always be people who try to post rubbish just to get links, whether it be in blog comments, on forums or in article directories.

Genuine comments are easy to spot, as they naturally (like your guidelines request) offer some form of input, question, or expand the discourse. What I find interesting is this:

This was posted on february 19th 2010, and the most recent comment – behind mine – is from the 8th of March. How many meaningful comments on here are present *just* for the “do follow” attributes on your commenting section? I guess the real question is – if a comment is genuine but made only for the link, does it matter?

Regards
PR

ps: your guidelines for posting are actually quite useful, much like a copyright – it won’t stop anyone, but I’m sure it serves as a deterrent :) .

Great Post Pixelhead – Thank You LOL
That’s not what you want, is it? And you are right!
Remember, a few months ago I posted with you for the very first time and I told you, you can delete my post since I do not have an active blog, but I wanted you to know I learned something new from you.
Well, I haven’t posted much here since then but came by once in a while to read and to learn something new. No Pixelhead, I’m not buttering you up, I’m only telling you, I like your posts.
You ask if commenting guidelines are good and here is what I think:
Commenting Guidelines are not just good, they are nowadays a must.
Why do you think I didn’t leave more comments here? The simple answer is, that I most of times I felt like I couldn’t leave a good comment, a post relevant quality comment. I have set up one rule for myself when it comes to link building and that is “DO NOT SPAM”. And to this day I do stick to this rule. More and more blog owners/admins have made their blogs being nofollow blogs. Quality blog commenting is one way of building backlinks and the minimum a comment poster should do to get a backlink from a blog is to leave a post relevant quality comment.
If I can’t do that, then I better keep my mouth shut or better saying, my fingers away from the keyboard.
But also I would like to bring up some critics about some blog owners/admins who use the so much loved keywordluv plugin simply as a bait to draw traffic and to receive as many comments as possible just to turn all links the commentators have left into nofollow links a few days later. Except of their own links for any answers on comments. And this, even on blog posts where they highly advertise for their blog to be a keywordluv blog. Now that’s not the right way either I would think, or what do you think about that method?
Then I rather leave a comment on a nofollow blog just for the traffic but at least I won’t feel like someone tried to cheat me out.
If everyone would stick to commenting guidelines, so that would help the blogs and the ones who leave the comments and this nofollow era could end again. For a new site like mine, it is very hard to build quality backlinks since there are fewer and fewer resources or if you just don’t have the budget to buy links or you don’t have the time to write 5 or 10 quality and unique articles a week.
To me blog commenting is fun, it is a way to learn something new (like here on your blog) and it is a way to build backlinks and to do some marketing for the site.
Well Pixelhead, I leave it up to you, like I always did, if you want publish this or not.
I only told you my 2 cents and tried to answer your question.
Best regards
Paula Jo
