Yellow Pages or Google Local

Posted by Pixelhead

Do you even have a Yellow Pages in your house?

This year, as many believe, including myself, you are going to see a huge increase in the number of smart phones that, much like my iPhone, will be able to access the internet from the palm of your hand. New data plans are becoming available all the time that are well within the budget of many.

You know when you do a search in Google and you put in a location modifyer, and the local listings appear at the top of the page. These are the listings that will appear on the cell phone screen of the user looking for local businesses such as restaurants, shops, Chiropractors, gargages, etc..the idea is, you want to be sure to be on the Google map and as close to the top position on those listings as possible.

Add Your Business to the Google Map

If you have a business and you have done any advertising, your business will probably already be listed on the Google Map. You should however, claim your listing, and submit yourself to be sure that the listing is correct. To do this you will need to have a Google account, and then you will need to log into the Google Local Business Center.

So even if it is already on the map, you should create a new listing and claim your listing. Being sure to to use the correct info to include the use of the five best categories. I would also suggest that you add your biggest keyword and your phone number at the beginning of your add description, so your phone number will appear in the add.

Its a pretty easy process, but just in case you have questions, check out this post for more detailed info on adding your business to the Google Map.

Its already there, how did it get there?

There are several data services(not listing) out there that get their data from both white pages and yellow pages.  Which then add the businesses to the search engines.  So if in the past you had a Yellow Pages add, your business is more than likely listed on the Google Map. The info in your business listing may be old or incorrect, so be sure to check it out, and if it needs to be changed, then log onto the Google Local business center and create your listing.

More and More Local Search

I am going to be doing a series on local search as I really believe that it is going to take off this year, and be even more important. So be sure to check back often, and you can also sign up for the feed.

this is a no brainer for me, I don’t even know where my phone book is. some business owners don’t know how to get listed in google local either, but it is very easy and usually shows up within a few weeks (at least last time I had a local business it did)

I agree that local directories could be more effective at marketing services such as plumbing Milford is an example of quick searches on the internet instead of trying to find the yellow pages is much more effective.

This is free service from Google? Sweet! I always thought you have to pay for your business to show up on Google maps and local. =) Time will come when more people in my city/region can easily get Google local/maps while mobile. Smart phones such as the iPhone is still pretty much expensive so it’s not for everybody. And the carrier plans are not as cheap as one might want it too. But it’s something to look forward to sometime in the near future.

@Nate Hanson

Well, we better start collecting those vintage items eh? Nonetheless, the Yellowpages print companies are trying their best to incorporate their item within online community.

I’ve been seeing the Google local listings popping up more and more whilst using Google, and I concur that it should be a priority to get a local business listing ASAP as part of your internet marketing strategy. The value of the Yellow Pages, along with print media like newspapers is definitely on the decline. Online is where it is at!

Google has *always* sold some of the top search results for lucrative keywords. Search Google for something like “credit cards” or “credit report” and you will see that the AdWords ads sometimes appear above the organic search results.

I couldn’t agree more. Have a smart phone keeps you connected when you are not at work. My friends phone is an android and his home screen constantly updates his social media status. I have an iphone and check email, twitter, facebook, youtube business location from it. Only going to grow in usage that is for sure.

The Google Places Pages “a webpage for every place in the world, organizing all the relevant information about it.” Present interesting possibilities as well as the potential repercussions which you mentioned in a different manner.

Yellow Pages has been really useful, but I think getting listed at Google is more important nowadays. Everyone uses Google to search for almost anything.

The yellow pages are becoming obsolete. As the internet is becoming more and more powerful, it’s also becoming the data source for just about everything. Getting your business listed in Google Local is definately the first place you should be getting listed.

Even if you business is only online and location really doesn’t matter I would still list it under the city your are residing in. It may not drive huge amounts of traffic to your site but extra traffic is extra traffic and the effort to list your business is minimal.

Hey, you are absolutely right! Yellow pages are definitely the way of the past. And the greatest advantage of Google over the yellow pages: It’s free! Not to mention you will probably get way more exposure.

The disadvantage that I personally am aware of is that sometimes you will end up on the third page of the local listings, and no one ever gets to you.
