Video Resumes: Is the new fad already dying?

Posted by kdoud10

I watched the video on Fox News’ website of the CEO of Webimax, who was interviewed on the morning news. He mentioned video resumes like they were a new, great way to get noticed by employers.

Adam suggested I do some research on these high-tech resumes (and try to answer the 10 questions he listed a few blogs ago: http://pixelheadonline.com/blog/2010/03/17/use-linkedin-facebook-and-video-resume/).

After breezing through some articles, blogs, and videos, I’m not so sure about them. For one thing, do employers really want to sit through an amateur video starring you?

I guess anything you can do as a job seeker to separate yourself from the crowd is smart. If doing a video resume helps that all the power to you.

Well, giving your resume the old way was very much accepted then and prove to be OK, with video resumes’ its kinda impersonal and as you mentioned, not all employers are comfortable staring at applicants during interviews or even if they are just trying to browse on the potential candidates. I guess, the old way is still the best way to get the attention of your prospective employers.

I vote for the old way. With video resumes’ employers can’t really get a real and good impression of the applicant in my opinion. To get a good and prospective employer it is always the best to meet face to face.

I was think that video is only getting bigger. But with the YouTube and Viacom legal battle I wonder what will happen to YouTube by the end of it.

Video is a great media to get your message across to the public. I think employers would use watch video at a later stage of the recruitment process. Good way to get a feeling for a person.

jobs are tough to come by – I think the video resume would be good but it would be best to follow it up with an actual resume

Video resumes are a great idea but this market is dominated by conservative kind of people. So traditional will still remain the best.

I think with the video resumes, the employer will find it easy to short list the candidates by making quick decisions.

I agree, video resumes are a great idea, if followed with an actual resume.

I don’t like the idea of video resumes. If you’re quite a shy person like me, it doesn’t jump out as something I would want to do. I would prefer to stick to the good old fashioned paper. I’m sure a lot of employers would rather not have to watch videos about yourself too.

A video resume promises to be interesting, unlike the boring piece of document that the old printed resume was. The job applicant shoots himself on video answering to certain selected questions. And every time there’s a career opportunity in sight, the video is made available to the employer.

It sounds great but I do not believe that employers have the time to watch 1,000 videos of about 5 minutes to up to 20 minutes. People will video all kinds of “strange” things. I prefer the old fashioned way. It works.

Video resumes only works best when the employer and the the applicant are miles away apart. If not, then better to do the good old resume thing.

The first two videos were kinda funny! They could possibly work in Marketing? When the third video started, it reminded me of 48 Hours – and I was about to hear something bad about Trent.I agree – skip the video resume, or you could end up on “career advice – what not to do!” :)

I am not sure that I as an employer would want to sit down and watch a video resume. Maybe it is the wave of the future and I am totally missing it.

Each day, our modern way of living including technology is getting more exciting and surprising. And this video resume is one of those things. Who knows? After 5 or 4 or 3 years, this type of resume will be used and will be recommended for good to all marketing companies.

Nothing seems to be rising faster than unemployment these days, so “The Video Resume” is very much in. “Business Resume” in this era is one of the most much in topic for employers or recruiters.

In theory, I can completely understand the appeal of video resumes as a way to present yourself in a new and innovative way of separating yourself from the crowd. That being said, I think that this is a case where there are many ways of doing them incorrectly and only a few ways of doing them right.

Personally, I don’t want my limited technical video abilities to transmit the message of being unprofessional or less-equipped to handle the job than others. I also think it’s imperative to avoid the temptation of trying to do anything too “cute,” since that can really rub potential employers the wrong way.

I saw that as well. I am glad they are fading away. Video resumes reminds me of an 80′s dating video. Not everyone is good in front of a camera either. While it enables you to add personality to what is normally a bland thing. I think the Traditional resume is a better idea.
