Checking My Statistics | 10 Stats I Check

Posted by Pixelhead

Do you love checking out your stats? I check numerous website statistics throughout the day, week and month. Without a doubt,  I waste a lot of time checking out all the free stats tools that are avialable to me.

Inspite of having the ability to waste a lot of your time, monitoring your websites marketing statistics can help you to determine both the efficacy of what you are doing and  what online activities you need to engage in that will give you the best results.  For example, I check out my stats on one of my other blogs and noticed that one of my posts gets a lot more traffic than others. Why? Checking the post I realized that it has tags on it with locations added to some of the keyword tags, so it is found by people who are looking for that keyword phrase with a particular location. Tip:When applicable, add relavant locations to your keyword tags.

I am not an expert on statistical analysis, but I do check them out and try to determine what causes spikes, or what causes one site to get more traffic than another. Even if you are a statistical analysis dummie, as I am, I would suggest that you take a look at your stats.

10  stats that I check include:

  1. Google analytics – This is the stats website that I try not to go onto too frequently, as I find I can loose a lot of time checking out all the cool info that Google analytics has to offer. But for a website owner, blog or non-blog, I would say it is a must that you have a Google Analytics account for analyzing your traffic and you make it part of your website marketing regime.
  2. WordPress.com Stats any time I log in to any of my WordPress blogs I check the stats. I definetly check this more frequently than Google Analytics. Seeing the page views decline encourages me to post more frequently.
  3. My Flickr stats lets me see what pictures have been viewed the most, and where the traffic came.
  4. Google Adsense – I like to check out the stats on our Adsense account and see which of our sites are bringing the most change. Its funny but you would think that the site with the most traffic would bring in the most dinero, but this is not usually the case.
  5. Ranking reports – I do monthly ranking reports for both my clients and for many of our sites. It is always fun to see the ranking going up..but on the flip side if a site, especially a client site takes a dive in the SERPs it can really be quite stressful. Keeping track of your Keyword ranking stats, lets you know which of your targeted keywords you need to focus on.
  6. Mybloglog Stats- I don’t check this one out nearly as often as I used to, maybe that has to do with the purchase of Mybloglog by Yahoo, but anyway the stats are still pretty cool.  To see the stats, a community must have a certain number of visitors,( 10 or 20) and then you can see where your visitors came from, what pages were viewed, and what links they clicked on.
  7. bit.ly – I have been using Bit.ly as my default link shorting service, but may be changing to Stumbleupons shortner services. I like seeing the number of times a tweeted link has been clicked on, and it also gives me the total number a link has been clicked on and what my number is of that total.
  8. TwitterCounter.com shows you some cool Twitter stats and shows you some nifty graphs of all your Twitter activity. I know this is only one of the many groovy sites for checking out Twitter Stats. Whats your favorite Twitter Stats site?
  9. Facebook Stats – I noticed emails coming in recently from Facebook about the acitivity on my profile and pages, I am sure I will be keeping an eye on this one.
  10. Feedburner stats – I use Feedburner for all my feeds.  I don’t check these stats frequently, and as I just mentioned on Constant Contacts blog post about Email List Growth, I pretty much don’t pay much attention to my email list or feed list. Yea, I know the money is the list..its just not been on my mind.

What are Your Stats?

What stats do you check out and how has checking your stats helped you? Got any free cool stats tools I should check out?

I probably waste an hour a day using most of these tools. They are helpful but not when I’m checking my adsense account every five minutes. I should realy limit myself to analyzing data once a day instead of fifty times.

For someone still new to it all, stats are exciting and scary to me. Ya! 125% increase, Oh no -32% decrease, what did I do? I am still figuring out WP and CCS, how to change font size, color, style. I am not sure what I am supposed to do with the stats information, and a couple sites, if I remember from google analytics say N/A so that isn’t really good, is it?!? And bit.ly I am not a fan of, what are they hiding??

I try to check only Google Analytics once a day. Adsense once a week and Amazon Associates (my biggest earner) once a day.

I think you could be checking too many stats…

Nice list of stats that you check, why do you check feedburner and twittercounter every day though?

I am always checking my stats, sometimes I think I spend more time looking at my stats then I actually do working. My top two are Google Analytics and Google Adsense currently.

I’m curious to about number five on your list though. I haven’t heard of this one yet and have been using a similar program. What is the website for “Ranking Reports”? I’m going to try going and see if it is better than the checker I am using now.

You are right. We should add all the traffic to come up with more precise and actual stats. Most of us only rely on Google Analytics and miss the big picture.

I always check the stats of my blog to see how much I can pursue readers to read my blog. The more I have visitors, the more motivated I am to continue what I’m doing.

You should check them nearly every 2-3 days as it should give you a better view on how viewers are coming in to check your blog and if you need to improve next time.

I spend a ton of time in google analytics watching the traffic patterns. But my daily addiction wasn’t on this list. My largest problem is searching google for my site placement as I tweak my target keywords. I am in there daily checking to see if google has crawled my site or if another page has been cached yet. Anyone else have this addiction?

Google Analytics is the one that we just can not get away from, it is an awesome free service. As for the rest, it depends on what the site is all about. Rankings is a must for customer sites. What software do you use to generate them though?

I check Google analytics, Clicktale, Ranking reports, and Facebook stats.

Other than that you could fall into the trap of analysis paralysis and overanalyzing.

What about Google Analytics? Alexa and Yahoo Site Explorer? In addition, I use many free tools to find your google SERP for that day to see if it has gone up or down, it helps a lot with SEO and SEM.

I only use Google Analytics and my c-panel website stats. Also, I run a weekly ranking check and that’s it. I wonder how do you find the time to check for all those stats? :)

I didn’t realize that bit.ly offered these types of statistics, mostly because I don’t use URL shorteners very often. I will have to go check them out. Thanks for the tips!

Some stats are also really handy, I’ve been using whos.amung.us for months now, and when I noticed a spike in the number of people on at one time, I did a few quick checks to make sure my server could handle the load of traffic.

I just prefer Google Analytics for this purpose & you can directly link it with your website. It constantly monitors the traffic on your website. But I will surely try one or two which are suggested by you.

There is two things that every webmaster checks daily: Google Analytics and Adsense. I don’t need any other statistics. You gain all information from these two.

Yes, i check them all the time. And what I find most time consuming is trying to compare the stats between different tools. Personally I use getclicky which I think is by far the best stats in the market. You can see the stats for my logo designsite using getclicky.

I’m finding myself reading more and more of your content everyday and this is one of the coolest posts I’ve read until now. For me, I still consider myself not working hard on reviewing stats because I don’t do it regularly as I’m supposed to which makes me think that I’m not working in the best way possible because reviewing the stats as you’ve mentioned above is definitely one of the most important tasks that any webmaster should do.

For me, I depend completely on the Awstats that comes pre-installed in my web hosting account control panel. I find it really useful. Bit.ly is useful too, but I hate that the link stats cannot be made private.. I mean anyone can see the statistics of my links. Correct?

My opinion is one has to check the statistics every second day…because if you check it everyday than there is not going to be a any drastic changes in the results…in fact check it every 3rd day….but then again it depends upon the services you are providing to client

I use and love AWStats. Nice and visual and come in handy if you have any Kurdish and Uzbekistani speakers as they language support is huge LOL.

I really dislike the fact that Godaddy has disabled as default the stats feature as this lost me a good week or 2 before I realized. Nuts.
