Using LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook To Find a Job

Posted by kdoud10

At my first PBN networking event (mentioned in my Networking blog), I briefly spoke to Kristen Kane, from Kane Partners, about an event she was holding at NBC10 studios about using social media to find jobs. She told me where to sign-up online and it was free!

Last night, I drove to the studios of The 10 Show in Bala Cynwyd for Kristen’s presentation called, “Jobs on Social Media.” Anchor and consumer reporter Tracy Davidson was there to greet the guests as they arrived for the event. She encouraged each of us to send her an email when we get a job (not if- when!). We sat in the studio while Kristen explained the benefits of LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook–if you use them correctly.  I have an account on all three of these sites, but until now I did not know how to use them for my job search

Which social media site is the most helpful for job searching?

LinkedIn and Twitter seem like the most promising social media sites if you’re looking for inside information about job openings.  I wrote down everything that caught my attention during Kristen’s presentation, and you can read about it in my blog post titled, ”Using Social Media to Find a Job.”

The importance of having a clear and effective resume:

At the conclusion of the evening, I had the chance to meet with a consultant from Kane Partners named Jessica and she reviewed my resume. Jessica gave me some helpful tips about formatting and she encouraged me to be as descriptive as possible in the bullet points under each job or internship–if anything is too general, it could be misunderstood by an HR representative or anyone else glancing over the resume.  Kane Partners offers resume reviews or redos if you make an appointment.

Have you made any meaningful connections on LinkedIn, Twitter or Facebook?

Fortunately I’m self employed, but there was an interesting story on the news awhile back about how a guy lost his job and within a couple days had landed a new job through his Facebook networking. Good reason to build a large network I guess.

Well all of these social networks can find you a job by either networking with companies or friends that can offer you an opportunity for a job opening. That said, I believe that Facebook and Linkedin are the best. Facebook is the best of both worlds as you can find friends in certain job fields that might interest you and look at pages of business with job postings. I’ve one more tip to add – use status updates frequently. Updating your status with the current job hunt status should keep your network informed and could help surface either some helpful tips or open job positions from friends. And, don’t just do this on LinkedIn – expand the scope of your hunt with other sites like Twitter.

In this job market people need to be ontop of trends and how to get yourself out there better. I found it really difficult to even get an interview as I can sell myself better than my resume can. I agree that social media is becoming a way to search for a job, but in my experience it is best to talk to your friends and mentors about looking around and asking people they think I would fit with if any positions are available or if they do let them know. I have always found my jobs threw networking.

I would suggest that everyone exercise caution in how to use social media in your job search. Remember, unless you’re careful, anyone can see your requests for job leads. Unfortunately, that includes your current employer, vendors and partners! :-)

Depending on your field, your social networking presence and online presence can directly impact your outcome. Its not unheard of for employers to scan your online profile and have it make or even break your hire if you have some scandalous content online.

I found this blog when I was looking for information to convince my niece who is entering college this fall to use Linked In. Not only is LI a great place to start making professional connections for internships but also for future employment… And, since GenXer’s are the principle users they identify and understand the value of LI more than Facebook or Twitter.

There are many more advantages other than finding job. A social networking site, as name says, these websites are not just simple websites.

These sites help you find huge stuff, knowledge, let you know how your niche and how much competitors you have.

Selling and getting jobs through these portals is quite easy other than submitting your resume in any job providing portal.

Now, when you join such websites, you can get in contact with any person and from any field. This can help in getting a job through a referral or even change your interest and might change your life completely..

But for LinkedIn, I never heard about it before. This is the first time. Thank you Pixelhead.

@enterpreneur market – Twitter might not be that good in finding any kind of job or selling your stuff or services but Facebook and LinkedIn are the best sources for getting your work done.

Actually over Twitter, spammers are always active and the recent tweets are not easy to read..And you will be tired reading each of the Tweets.

The other websites like FB and LinkedIn, are good sources for getting job. As LinkedIn is a community for professional people, thus increasing your network has huge probability of getting you job or business work..

This is just the way how you tackle with these networking websites and how much time you dedicated yourself in their working and doing some research.

It is sure that you will get results for your efforts but don’t think instantly.

My friend who works as graphics designer is depending on Facebook to get design jobs. He’s self employed of course, and it’s working great for him. So, it’s not always that you need to find a job at a firm, you can get jobs from your contacts if you know how to use Facebook correctly. About LinkedIn and Twitter, I’m not sure though. I’ve never heard of anyone who managed to get jobs out of them.

It isn’t the goal of social networks sites get a job for anybody in a directly way.

They give you the tools to interact with people who are in the same field as you, to connect with them and their companies, to share and help each other. This is what we are doing now.

You can meet them and they can meet you. If they have need to hire someone to provide the services you give, then you will have helped to find a job.

All social sites are different, with different objectives, with tools focusing on different areas, some will be more useful than others in this issues.
