Gowalla & FourSquare not Gowalla Vs FourSquare

Posted by Pixelhead

Last week I started using the GeoLocation Based Social Media site Gowalla to check in while out and about and I like its features that allow me to update not only my Gowalla profile, but also Facebook places, Twitter,  and my Tumblr. I also like the feature of being able to post pictures to my profile and add the pics to the spot that I am visiting as well as posting to my Twitter and Facebook profiles if I desire.

Gowalla and FourSquare

Gowalla and FourSquare

Gowalla and FourSquare are not the only players in the GeoLocation Based Social Media game, but they are the two major players. FourSquare being the bigger of the two, but Gowalla, which was established in 2007,  is the older of the two.

Who Uses GeoLocation Social Media sites?

Users of these GeoLocation social services tend to be tech savy, young people who have disposable income.  If I had a business that relied upon foot traffic, I would strive to get these users of both Gowalla and FourSquare into my establishment.

For more info on using GeoBased Location Social Media for Business check out the following SlideShare presentations:(I will be doing a post on this subject in the near future)

  1. GeoBased Location Social Media for Brands
  2. Proof that GeoLocation Marketing Can Succeed

Gowalla VS FourSquare Features

I am not going to go into any more detail in this post. I encourage you to check out both GeoLocation Social Media sites and compare the two.  I myself, will be keeping an eye on both, and will be looking for ways that I can use them to enable my local Search clients to drive foot traffic to their businesses.

Are You Using FourSquare and/or Gowalla?

Thanks for posting this. I’m a little behind on these services and this kind of kicks me in the pants to get cracking on catching up on them.

I was using foursquare for a little bit but I kept forgetting to check in to places. I haven’t tried facebook places but have seen others and it looks pretty cool. How do you like tumbler?

I’ve been using Foursquare for some time now, and aside from being able to find any business I might be looking for, getting deals or specials from local businesses and appealing to my obsessive/compulsive side, there really isn’t much else that I see to these types of services.

They ARE fun though!

By the way, both services allow updates to post to Twitter and Facebook.

These two geo-based location services is great in terms of searching for friends and or a city but could be very vital to a business. I can see business using this to reach out to people about a promotion to nearby customers and using a points system to reward them. This seems like a great idea that will only get better with time.

Paul, Tumbler seems a bit wonky..I installed it on my personal feed site, and have noticed that it is down frequently(currently down), but I like the idea. If I can get the bugs worked out, it might be pretty cool.

These social media platforms are essential for retail and restaurant type businesses. Another up and coming site is called scavngr.com. It is adding a new dynamic of gaming to the mix. My friend is using it for his icecream store, it seems to be working really well!

Geo based services has been around for quite some time now and undoubtedly Foursquare was at the forefront of this GPS based game, way ahead than the other competitors, until Facebook jumped in with their enormous user-base.

I use both Gowalla and Foursquare now, and I have done so for a really long time. I started using Gowalla first, and it was cool and felt like a new thing (they gave you stickers!). But then Foursquare popped up, and I started using that to. Right now, members of Foursquare are much more active, they leave useful tips and reviews, there’s the sometimes prestigious title “mayor”, there are some good deals and so on. But now, there is also Facebook Places. And friends who have never even thought of using location based services are now using FB Places! Obviously I like the development we see here but sometimes I feel like I have to choose…

I’ll check out Gowalla and Foursquare because I’m not familiar with them. I enjoy blogging on WordPress and Tumbler but I haven’t really scoped out some of the other social media tools that people are using. Perhaps I’m just not young enough with enough disposable income. ;-)

I remember reading an article in Wired some time ago about Gowalla and Foursquare as startups – they were both two completely original ideas that happened at the same time. I think they compete but healthily because there isn’t really anybody else in the check-in industry (except Facebook who’s attempt seemed something of a flash in the pan). Good luck to them both I say!

i just recently tried out Foursquare and it is fantastic, I love the interface as its very simple to navigate around and the results are there. I know now that Foursquare is going to dominate over Gowalla.

I think both Gowalla and Foursquare offer a unique take on geolocation social media. While I think they are both great tools, there is really only room for one in my life. With all the apps with geolocating properties, such as, Yelp and Facebook,

I love the fact that Gowalla let’s you check into many of your favorite social networks like Facebook and Twitter. On the other hand I think it is really smart of Foursquare to integrate specials for businesses. It’s a great tool for businesses to gain local interest.

I’m really worried about Google’s new search results favoring Geo locations. I just started a new web based business which is global. Google only shows the results for Australia. I wonder how this service you mention could help? Also do you private SEO work for companies?

Using any geolocation services is a fantastic opportunity but you should really think it through and not waste any advertising dollars. There are savvy people that will give you a whole bunch of BS since many people are ignorant of what is really going on since it is so new and techy.

Good post

Foursquare is one of the best incentive based marketing tools out there. Why people have started using facebook places is beyond us! Check in with foursquare, get rewarded by the business…or

Check-in with facebook, don’t get any rewards and announce that you aren’t home to every random on your FB list…

As a designer I can mention that the Gowalla logo looks more professional than FourSquare one.. It reminds me one of these ice-cream guises, but still looks very good.

btw, when you will decide to get a professional logo instead of your head, I would recommend you one great Florida logo design company.

I thought Gowalla started really strong – great deisgn and interface, however foursquare has overtaken with its marketing and user uptake. Facebook places looks a big competitor in the future when they undoubtedly bring in more features.

Get involved with the likes of Gowalla & Foursquare. Currently working with someone who checked in at the same location. Geo location apps have huge potential for business. Suspend any scepticism and give it a go.

I have always thought that foursquare would be the future of social dynamic networking, meaning you network was dynamic and dependent on where you curretnly were at that moment in time.
