Building Homes for Poor Families of Guatemala

Posted by Pixelhead

Since my last blog post back in 2008 about the Guatemalan organization, FromHousestoHomes.org that makes houses for poor families of Guatemala, I  signed up to go to Guatemala this summer (2011) with the non-profit, to pitch in and build a cinder block houses.

From July 28th to August 7th, a group of 5 from my church, which includes my friend Dave who was in the video on the older post, and his two oldest kids along with my step-daughter and I, will be building  a cinder block house for a family that previously had  a corn stalk house.Guatemalan Corn Stalk House

Corn stalk houses vs Cinder Block Houses

Corn stalk houses are not very secure and can be easily destroyed by the tropical weather. The cinder block houses can not be easily destroyed, and have a tin roof that keeps out mother nature.
The corn stalk houses also are easily broken into by animals and other unwanted guests. The cinder block houses have doors and windows that can be secured. Additionally, each house is equipped with bunk beds, a stove, and some shelves.

FromHousestoHomes Cinder Block HouseThe cinder block houses we are building are not very luxurious compared to our homes in the States, but compared to the corn stalk houses, they are a huge improvement.

Fund-raising for Guatemala

My daughter and I need to raise $3777.00 for the trip, so we are ramping up my fund-raising efforts.  I would like you the reader to to donate $10 usd to help me with our trip.  For your donation, not only will I be grateful, but I will add you and your site url to the donors page that I will have on this site as well as All-Travel-sites.com Guatemala Donation page.

In addition to donating, I also have some advertising specials available which will result in up to 100% of the proceeds going to the trip. Check out the advertising for Guatemala post for info about the advertising options. If you are interested in some other advertising that is not included, or if you have suggestions, please let me know in a comment.

Additionally, until July 15th, all directory submission review fees will be applied to the trip 100%.  This includes submissions to the following directories:

Will you donate and help poor families in Guatemala?

UPDATE: I deleted the Paypal button after we got a donation several months later. However, if you would like to donate, please feel free to visit the Fromhousestohomes.org site and donate.

Everyone deserves a home and poor people deserve them the most, they probably saw their loved ones die on the streets because of hunger..or thirst or bad living conditions.. They deserve a home!

Best of luck! I wish more people in this world were as eager as you are to help those in less than desirable conditions. We can easily take our lives for granted, until we actually experience what it might be like if we were born or live elsewhere in this world.

Good on ya mate! May you achieve your worthy goals!

Thanks a lot Wayne, both for the comment and the donation. Before I go, I better get my body in shape. I was out working in the yard for about 15 minutes today and I was sweating buckets, and it was just about 80 degrees out..a far cry from the tropical July/August weather we will be working in…I am hoping I won’t be having a heart attack.
I have a lot of work to do to get to my goals, but I just started…thanks for starting me off.

You better get your body in shape for you to accomplish your goal. I am really happy knowing people who have a kind heart to help others to build a home without asking for any return.

Sometimes we take for granted what we have and keep desiring more! It’s important to realize how lucky we are and to help others in need. Goo luck with your trip! I’m sure you’ll accomplish great things!

Those corn stalk houses are everywhere south of the border and is difficult for anyone to rebuild their house into these cinder block style. Life is short for some of these people and the fact the you are helping with a couple of friends and your daughter is a testament of how there is great people can become to help others.

When I see pictures on real estate web sites it seems all houses have yards encircled with cinder block walls. I grew up in the north where every back yard was an extension to everyone elses back yard you could be gardening and talk to neighbors 3 houses down so when my husband and I moved here 20 years ago we were surprised by all the fences as well…..I assumed that they were to protect the swimming pools as there are pools in almost every back yard.

I think you are very cool to do this thing. Housing is such an important issue, especially in the developing world and with more and more of the world’s poor being displaced and the swelling numbers of migrants and refugees the housing difficulty only grows. I think you might be interested in this youtube video which demonstrates how a house constructed from old industrial pallets has been designed for building reliable temp/long term housing in emergency situations. I understand that the house can be built in a day. Here it is: http://youtu.be/4Z7WI2v1Mh8
All the best to you!

House is one of our basic needs in-order to live in this world. It will be a great help to those people living in Guatemala. I hope everything will leads into it’s sweet success. And maybe soon you will also reach those places who also needs a program like this.

one my friend went to Guatemala. for this purpose she learnt spanish. and when her parents told her they wanted her to stay at home, find good job, earn money etc., she answered: “i can’t live that way. although i don’t have money and live on offerings from others, i can share some happiness with those who need it.” real sacrifice. i’m glad that there are people like she is and like you are who cares for the poor and those who need help

What a fabulous and generous thing to do. I cannot believe that in the 21st century, people are still living like this through no fault of their own. It is truly awful. I know how tough it is fundraising, I am doing a trek myself in China and have to raise £3000. I will use your directories next week when I am doing some work for my site to support your cause.

Well done and best wishes, Sonya

Many people in developed nations have little idea of the amount of total poverty out there. It’s crazy. There are millions upon millions of people who have almost nothing and little chance to change their situation. Good on you for caring and raising awareness.

Housing in poor and war-torn areas (not to mention degraded urban environments mushc closer to home) is one of the fundamental issues that has to be addressed if we want to make any claim to be a civilized society. Of course, the housing problem per se needs addressing and this project is a great step forawrd; but we shouldn’t forget that the housing need exemplified here also serves to point to a many, much deeper background problems such as warfare, food inequality (between producers and consumers) and the systems that we have in place to respond effectively and rapidly to foreseable and unforeseable environmental disasters.

Just visited the website fromhousestohomes.org, and appreciate their effort working towards their aims to strengthen community harmony in highland Guatemala by building lasting, healthy homes, improving access to health care and education, and inspiring participation between the poor and civil society. Also great to share that they are not just doing it for name sake, and seriousness shows by their effort to provide cinder block houses that is more secured, and the fact that each house is equipped with bunk beds, stove, shelves. For power supply I would suggest to use solar powers that have low operational cost and have long life. What you say folks.
