7 Reasons to Use WordPress as Your CMS

Posted by Pixelhead

I was doing a Mexican Restaurant Review on thegrubhound, for the Mexican Restaurant Mattito’s. Upon doing a ctrl+U shortcut to check out the code of their site, I discovered that the vibrant site is using WordPress as its CMS.

The Amazing WordPress CMS

I have been seeing more and more sites that are using WordPress for their Content Management System(CMS).  At our SEO Company,  Baldydog.com, we don’t normally build websites, but we refer potential clients to our select group of Web Designers like Newconceptsonline.com who designed the current Baldydog.com site or Liquid Interactive, a company that specializes in B to B sites for fortune 500 types of clients.

However, as a service to the local business community and many friends, I do occasionally build a site using WordPress as the CMS. These are usually small Mom and Pop types of sites that don’t have a huge budget, for a designer or a premium website. A few of these are the Limerick Barber.com, Cdsplace.com, Dierolfsupply.com, and EasyDesigns.
Several of these have static home pages, which are homepages that are not blogs.

How Do You Make a Static Home Page

Depending upon the Theme, you are using, you might be able to make a static(permanent) home page differently like EasyDesigns,  which was made with a premium theme(not giving a link because I would not recommend or use the theme again).  WordPress does however give you an easy way to make any page you chose to be a static home page.

Visit the previous link to get detailed directions on setting any page to be a static home page.

How Do I Design a Home Page

To let you know, I am not a designer. Baldydog.com does have an in-house graphic designer, who does our basic work, and as I mentioned before, we have partnered with web designers who we refer to for more elaborate designs. Unless you are a programer, and would like to slowly define your website design like Wayne, my suggestions as a non-designer, is to start with a good theme, and go from there. For many of the sites I have been building lately,  I have been using the free Mystique Theme by DigitalNature that was recommended to me by my wife, the owner of Fatladysingz.com.

Mystique is an easy to use theme that allows for a multitude of adjustments that can be made, some easy, and some a little more tricky,  which involve adding some code to the template such as these 40+ Mystque Theme modifications. Using any of these modifications as well as the many options available on the Mystique user panel, the web designs you can make with Mystique are unlimited. Mystique can be found in the WordPress themes directory.

I probably will not be creating any sites that look half way as nice as Mattito’s  since my design abilities are so limited. But using WordPress as your CMS, allows you to create sites that can compete with large company websites .

7 Reasons to Use WordPress As Your CMS

What Do You Think?

Do you know of any good business sites that utilize WordPress as the CMS? What do you think about using WordPress as a CMS?

WordPress is an impressive package altogether. It can be pretty much anything you need it to be. A single page sales site, a blog, a site, a full-blown community hub.

Thanks for throwing a bit of linkage my way!

BTW, did you get my email on that link directory submission?

Relating it to plugins, WP is the best there is. I’ve long switched from opensource to WP because it supports SEO by a long mile compared to other CMS platforms. Thanks for the tips, very useful :)

I’ve been using wordpress for well, only several weeks but it is a lifesaver. I have always wanted to make a website but I only knew basic html which in this day in age isn’t good enough. Well somehow I stumbled across wordpress and it has been a lifesaver. I’ve used it for several websites and even set up two for friends.

I have gone back and forth with others about wordpress and suggested not to use for a period of time. However, after getting used to it and looking at if for CSS and the plugins it has many useful features. The main one being the additional plugins which out weigh everything I used to say about wordpress.

You’re completely right Pixelhead, using wordpress as a CMS has been very helpful. I find wordpress very user friendly and working with the Content Management System(CMS) can be a great experience. The 7 reasons you pointed hold so much truth and I’m feeling glad to have read them because I missed noticing some of the reasons.

WordPress is GREAT and is probably the best service of its kind. Its never been so easy to create a nice looking website via one of their templates, and they make the task of customizing the layout very user-friendly. If you are a bit more advanced and have some CSS know-how, you can endlessly tweak things without a whole lot of programming or design skill.
The thing that WP really excels at though is PLUGINS. None of the other services can even touch WordPress when it comes to Plugins, particularly SEO-related ones.

Its not a surprise to me that more and more websites are adopting wordpress as their content managing system. I have been using wordpress since version 2.5, and its only gotten better and better, and its no surprise to me that over 50 million people are using it. You mention about wordpress being SEO friendly, you bet it is! One of the things that amazes me about it is how fast Google is able to crawl and have new posts already published to their search engine. I mean literally within less than 60 seconds of me publishing a post, the content will already be on Google. Thats just unreal!

I have been using WP now for over two years for my own blog site. I remember the first time I used it, it was like a duck to water. It’s so intuitive to use, unlike some CMS systems I have used in the past, and the plug-ins are easy to integrate.

You are right about it being SEO-friendly. My blog got into the rankings within a matter of weeks. Google loves it, and the more unique and fresh content you write on WordPress, it gets even better.

It is so good and straightforward to use, we have used a WP based site for our new business site, designing the front end ourselves, which is fantastic. We get the bespoke design and branding we want, and the easy CMS backend of WordPress.

Thanks for your article.
Best wishes, Sonya

WordPress is not only meant to create Blogs? Indeed, it is a great online Content Management System with a lot of customization, plug-ins and themes. It is possible to create many different WordPress Websites quite easily and the look and feel, functionality and usability are typically very good compared to other solutions. WordPress is free and know to be one of the most powerful and yet easy to use publishing applications available. WordPress does however give you an easy way to make any page you chose to be a static home page.

Can we really call wordpress a CMS?

I have to agree to the fact that few solutions can beat wordpress when it comes to price (free) and simplicity (all the way from setup to configuration and use).

But when comparing WP with CMS (or solutions normally called CMS) we see that there are quite a lot of differences.

* WP is much easier to use!
* WP is much easier to manage when it comes to added functionality (plugins)
* WP is in many cases easier to handle when it comes to themes and looks

Is it possible to do everything a full blown CMS can do with a normal WP installation, I’d say no, but then, many owners of the CMS systems never use the majority of their CMS bling.

One system I know quite well is epi server (created in sweden) and it requires some heavy duty interest, knowledge and work to use well.

So, would I chose epi server (high quality CMS) or WP?

I’d go with WP any day of the week until I have a company so big it could handle the overhead costs epi server causes.

I am using wordpress for the last 3 years and I am very satisfied!! I like the most enormous number of themes and plugins, so you can change the look of the site very quickly. The best thing is that it can be used by people who know nothing about programming or design. This CMS issued a kind of democracy on the internet, because now virtually everyone can make a blog.

WordPress is good not even for sites that regularly update their content (so they must have some kind of CMS) but also for static sites because it is currently easiest way to build a web site if you don’t have any experience as web designer or programmer. It is also recommended for more complex sites trough the use of numerous plugins that can satisfy almost any demand that web site can have. And last but not least SEO aspect of WordPress sites are very good in compared to other type of sites (pure html, dynamic sites etc…).

When I started blogging some years ago I used Blogger. I then wanted more, and moved on to WordPress. Personally I think it’s the best there is – user friendly, versatile, regular updates, great plugins etc.

Pixelhead,

Love the blog.

We use WordPress.com for our main site, and though it has limited functionality, it works really well. The other sites we host use wordpress.org and that works great as well.

I just dunno why anyone wouldn’t use a template-based CMS anymore…

For me, wordpress indeed is the way to go as far as CMS goes, its very user friendly and has thousands of plugins to choose from to enhance whatever features you would like to have on your blog. Also, wordpress has a lot of beautiful themes that are more easy to edit to adapt your personal preference.

We have been using WordPress as our CMS at The List Growers since 2009. When you combine WordPress with the Blogger High SEO plugin, writing high quality SO optimized blog posts is easy.

I like using WordPress for business websites. I have used it many times.

One thing that some businesses want is the ability to update the site on their own. When you build a static HTML site, it is much more difficult for them to make minor changes.

With WordPress you just need to teach an office girl or someone else how to log in. From there they can figure it out if they are somewhat computer savvy.

We recently migrated to WordPress and are very impressed with what it offers. In particular the quick learning curve and the flexibility to customise it. For small businesses such as ours being easy to learn is crucial, so we can concentrate on our business activities in the ergonomics industry. The amount of plug ins out there is also a winner for WordPress.

I think wordpress is the best choice for a cms. I do have a question… What would the benefit be of using a static page as the homepage for wordpress? I tried this method before, but posts ranked higher than the homepage! I wonder if this is because posts can be tracked back but pages can’t. Is it worth the effort of using a static page as a homepage if you post frequently?

@Carl Reid, I know a lot of businesses like to have a static home page because it looks more like a regular website home page. If the blog is not being updated regularly, in my opinion, it would be better to have a static home page.

Also, you should use WordPress because it has a wide range of support just like extended plugins, theme support and whenever you upgrade your site, it’s just one click away. Incredible, isn’t it?

Yes wordpress is best CMS according to mee too. But we should not forget that if we have a fixed number of pages for our websites (generally companies, restuarant or owners of shops websites), it can be better to use direct html without any php or asp codes. Because these script codes increase the load time of a page.

WordPress is indeed a great CMS. That’s why it is called Magic CMS. With lots of development in design and plugin lately it is ofcourse one of the best cms and probably beating Joomla and others. Using it since early 2006 and it never disappointed me.
