Guatemala Mission Trip

Posted by Pixelhead

We have been back from our Guatemala Mission Trip for several weeks now, so I better do a brief synopsis of our trip. (not as brief as I intended) I am doing a more detailed series on the trip on All-travel-sites.com.  You can click on each picture below to see the full online version. Additionally, you can go down to the bottom of the page and visit the Fromhousestohomes.org Facebook Fan page to see all of my Guatemala Mission trip pics.

Volcan Agua

Volcan Agua seen from the Antigua Market

Overall, it was a great trip…I am blessed to have gone.  Guatemala, from what I saw is a very beautiful, but poor country. Antigua, is an old city, with cobble stoned streets and lots of ruins for tourists to tour threw. We actually went through the ruins of  one old church on our first full day.

We arrived in Guatemala on Thursday the 28th of July in the early afternoon. Our work week with Fromhousestohomes.org (FHTH)began on the following Monday.  On Friday, we climbed Volcan Pacaya, one of Guatemala’s active volcanoes….well worth the trip. The next day we went to Lake Atitlan, which is the largest and deepest lake in Guatemala, and is also a must see for any one touring Guatemala. Sunday we went to a bi-lingual church for our Sunday service. Other than buying occasional hand crafted goods from the locals, this was the extent of our vacationing.

FromHousestoHomes.org Mission Trip

While we were in Guatemala, history was made. For the first time ever, Guatemala had a team in the World Cup and on Saturday night, they scored the first goal ever by a Guatemalan team, and beat Croatia 1:0. That night, there were fireworks all across Guatemala.

Tips for Traveling to Guatemala

Additonal blog posts about my Guatemala Mission Trip can be read on all travel sites. The first post I did about my trip was Pre-Mission Trip Activities

You can see all my photos from the trip on the FHTH Facebook page.

Final thoughts about Guatemala

Guatemala is a beautiful but poor country that really should not be missed in your travels.  As I have seen on other web sites, it is known as the land of eternal spring. Not once did it get so hot that I thought I would die. Even during our hardest labor, the temp was not much higher than 85 degrees Fahrenheit.  Its a country that has a lot to do, a lot to explore.

Things I would like to do on my next trip to Guatemala

Thanks for posting your travel and mission to Guatemala. Your efforts of making other lives comfortable is viral. I felt the same way too. People your kind are needed for people like them. Thumbs up to you!

This is also the virtue in my heart when I started a charity for people like them. You can visit it here: http://sacredlove.com/giving-forward

Feel free to spread the word about my charity work too.

Thanks.

I believe you had real fun building that in Guatemala. I’ve been in Congo, not the same country but similar situation and i had some fun because i can live without all my “city stuff”.

You are quite brave to journey in an unknown country and, also, it’s very generous of you to give your time and knowledge to others. I bet you’ve gained wonderful stories to tell.

Great to read about Guatemala, i have visited that region myself and was blown away. Would also recommend Inca Ruins, and the work you have been doing there is very wonderful. Inspiring.

Wow, excellent story. Thanks for the share. I have a cousin who runs an orphanage in El Salvador and went to help him build. Just like Guatemala, El Salvador is beautiful, but very poor as well.

That’s really good news that you were blessed to go and participate in building a better, stronger house, in 5 days!
And you got to tour also, but of course your primary goal was helping to improve the lives of other people, and that is an example everyone should follow to help make this world a better place.

Great shots, it looks like you and your daughter had a great and productive trip. How cool was it to be able to interact and play with the local families and children. I will definitely check out your full post at all travel sites.com. It must have been so rewarding to be able to help out.

Hope your page is getting a lot of visitors on this “Labor Day” weekend, consider:

* A lot of people who have a job have the day off of work on Monday “Labor Day”, but at least 9.1% of people are unemployed according to the government, everyone knows it could be more than twice that.

* You used most of your trip not for a vacation but for doing the actual hard work of building a better, stronger house for those in need, blessed should you be.

A lot more people need to follow your very good example of giving kindness to others.

The story about your travels to Gautemala is very inspiring and refreshing, and it’s a sharp contrast to the greedy you-know-whats that were applauding Apple Corp AAPL for barely giving any charity. Those fools are deeply misguided and should learn from you, if they can ever stop thinking about only themselves.

That list looks pretty accurate, especially about not drinking the tap. It seems like a beautiful place though indeed. Do they really rob you while you climb the volcano without a guide?

I’d always heard people say that visitors to Mexico and Central America shouldn’t drink water from the local source under any circumstances, but I just thought they were exaggerating…

I laughed IRL at this “Don’t climb any volcanoes by yourself unless you want to get robbed.” Really now, all by yourself? I can’t imagine myself climbing a volcano alone and in a strange country. :D Then again I know a lot of people are really that adventurous. Anyway, drinking water from the tap is really a no-no for me anywhere I go. Who knows where the water is coming from. Bottled water always.

Building a house from start to finish in 5 days is quite an accomplishment. It provides shelter and helps the community become inspired to create more. What this mission has done is to make a permanent and positive in the area that was visited, and one that will not be forgotten for a long period of time.

It is heart-warming to read this post. I am glad to have visited this blog and truly admire what your group is doing.
