BagsOnTheRun: Shop with Reusable Shopping Bags

This is a guest post for Bagsontherun.com.

I love shopping, strolling in the mall and just buying whatever I want. Not only me but most of people  really love to do that .However at the end of every shopping spree is the bunch of plastic bags that are left. It is very hard to eliminate these really; the Earth just can’t keep it anymore. Did you know that the average US family uses approximately 1,000 plastic bags per year! That number astonished me, and that’s why I love using Reusable shopping Bags!

I’m very passionate about using reusable bags for all my shopping needs whenever I go shopping. It’s not only a cost effective way to do my shopping but it also helps save the planet from the tragedy of wasted plastic bags blowing in the wind, clogging landfills and waterways and harming wildlife that ingests or gets entangled in the filmy stuff. It is about time that every shopper have his/her own reusable shopping bag. My latest find on the internet is a place called BagsontheRun a company that sells Reusable bags at great prices.

BagsOnTheRun offers basic, simple & stylish reusable bags which includes Grocery Bags, Shopping Bags, Customized Bags with company Logos for a very reasonable price, with a ten-pack going for between $16 and about $20. The bags are made of polypropylene, making them very strong, chemical resistant and 100% recyclable.

Bags on the Run come in a variety of colors and styles, from plain colors to “Going Green” logos. Out of the selection,
the Navy “G” bag is probably the cutest in my opinion, although knowing me; I would be inclined to go for the plain black.

You can’t beat the price on these and they are especially perfect for grocery shopping. I have a set of similar bags and they are the first thing I reach for when I need an easy tote. Also check out their fundraising and corporate page, where you can order custom bags for your organization.

Anybody looking to buy bags for personal use, to give as gifts, or companies not only buying for retail use, but to give away at trade shows, company functions, holidays, etc. can get them here.

Bacchus Press: Green Printing is a Responsible Job

This is a guest post by Alex Jacob.

I and Sam have worked in marketing and advertising for a number of years and we used to print a lot of materials. We printed brochures, fliers, newsletters, direct mail, and many other documents. Then of course we out-sourced some printing jobs as well, like stationary and business cards. I used to go through 100 business cards a week on occasions. It amazes me now how wasteful it all was. We were challenged by our employers to find ways to cut spending but were never challenged to green our office. I should email them and see if things have changed!Green Printing Logo

Printing is one such process that produces harmful wastes leading to environmental pollution. The use of petroleum inks, varnishes, laminates and adhesives leads to the production of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The release of VOCs in the atmosphere has adverse environmental effects. This not only pollutes the air but also leads to respiratory ailments.

To save the environment, publishing houses should print green i.e. the printing process/ technology should be environment-friendly.
Green printing is a responsible and specialized job and thus it is offered by only a handful of printing presses like Bacchus Press. Such type of printing houses source the paper from well managed forests that comply with strict environmental standards. The printing process is planned carefully to achieve optimum output by minimal usage of energy. The papers are sourced only from FSC (Forest stewardship companies) certified companies. Green printers comply with all the environment friendly standards offering optimum production at minimal environmental damage.

If you are looking for San Francisco Certified printer for green printing, then Bacchus Press is just a hop, skip and a jump from almost anywhere in the Bay Area – making it easy to color proof and conduct press checks. They help you create high quality business cards, postcards, direct mails campaigns and other print products/services, and make it easy for you to be kind to the environment while still delivering the highest quality printing possible.

Canvas Shopping Bags for December’s Environment

This months featured site is a local company I discovered one day while out doing errands. Mybarebags.com is a site that sells reusable canvas shopping bags. reusable shopping bagThe issue of plastic shopping bags has been covered in previous posts. Plastic bags are something that I believe we need to learn to live without, and adopting a mentality of reusing instead of a disposable mentality is a really good step in the direction of drastically reducing plastic bag use.

I have actually bought and started using the reusable bags that you see at the grocery store. However, according to the owner of Mybarebags.com, Joyce Weand, these bags are made out of “non-woven polypropylene which is an oil-based product (more oil dependency…)” and the bags are only good for so many uses, and will not biodegrade in our lifetime.

Canvas shopping  bags like the ones sold by Mybarebags.com are made out of cotton and are 100% biodegradable.

Neil also has some advice about saving the the automobile industry. Check out these posts as well as any of  Neil’s other Huffington Post articles.

While we are on the subject of the auto industry bailout, check out the post Auto Bailout-Green Economy Opportunity.

A $19,000 electric car similar to the smart car is to be released in the US in 2009. This electric car is only to be a low speed vehicle(LSV) so nothing for those of you with a lead foot. Links in this article then lead me to several other electric car articles:

October Environment Post

From Treehugger, 30 Different Ways to Put a Roof Over Your Head…with all the layoffs and the way the economy is people are going to be needing this type of housing…a better class of Hoovervilles?

Speaking of shelter, I came across this site which sells Earth Shelter Technologies…these look like some pretty sweet
Earth friendly homes.

Next, a somewhat sarcastic web page, The Most dangerous Species in the Mediterranean, really reminds me of the Plastic Ocean article again.

DailyTech has a post about “60 Minutes” Catching a Tech Firm Red Handed by exporting tech garbage to China…this article really makes me think about all the computers and cell phones that I have had within the last decade…I wonder were they all are now? Sadly, it also makes me realize that my spending habits do affect others.

What is the Carbon Footprint of Your Favorite Wine?

I was sent a message from Kim to check out the Mixx thread about the post Wine and The Ecosystem on Nature.org. Check out the post to find some great articles about the environmental concerns facing the wine industry. This post Liberty School Cabreminded me of the August environmental post which had a reference to a Treehugger article about boxed wines which according to the article, is more environmentally friendly because the materials used for boxed wines are so much lighter than bottles. I am not exactly sure how many different wines are available in the boxed form, but I am guessing we should be seeing a greater variety as the industry gains respectability. Maybe Gary over at Wine Library TV will do a boxed wine video to let us know if any quality boxed wines are available.

If boxed wine isn’t something you are willing to try, try buying wines that are made locally instead of buying the imports which must be transported over a long distances. For a few more tip on buying more environmentally friendly wines, check out he article “What’s your wines carbon footprint?”

How does your favorite wine stack up?

Other Environmental Info

Kim also has a post that poses the old question Am I my brothers keeper?  With the brother being the Earth.

Wow, I just found out about William Yuan, a twelve year old inventor who invented a new type of solar cell that absorbs 500 times the amount of energy current cells absorb. Wow…that is some kid.

From the http://www.onehundredmonths.org/ newsletter, came this creative video Wake Up, “Freak Out - then Get a Grip” , which I found to be a bit depressing, however its ending has a hopeful message.

Wake Up, Freak Out - then Get a Grip from Leo Murray on Vimeo.

I am putting a link to a video by the BBC ‘Earth: The Climate Wars’ which I have not yet watched, but intend to when I get a moment.

Environmental pages From Stumbleupon:

An article about the uses of Hemp…I always new it was a groovy product, but who new how truly useful it could be.

How about you, got any environmental news to share?
