“No Follow” is Done

Posted by Pixelhead

This “No Follow” tag post is just a quick little post to tell all visitors who leave comments, that those comment links will now not utilize the “No Follow” tag. I did not use the Do follow widget, I just went into the template and changed all “No Follow” tags to “follow” tags which may or may not work for other templates.
Randa Clay's Do Follow Badge I was on Laketrees blog and came across her “I Follow” post, which gave credit to Randa Clay Design for the U Comment, I follow badge. Thanks to all the other bloggers who use the “I Follow” badge.

Here is a list of some blogs that I have found in addition to the two above and Pixelheadonline, that do not utilize the “no Follow” tag and are also great resources. If you would like to be added, please leave a comment with the url of your “No Follow” or “Do Follow” Post.Randa Clay's Pink Ifollow Logo

Update: I just came across a huge list of blogs that do not use the No Follow attribute on Courtney Tuttle’s Blogs That Follow post.

Update 11/1/2007: I did install and activate the DoFollow Plugin thanks to being reminded by Clive over at Miazma.com, which is a nice looking blog that also does not use the “No Follow” tag by the way.

dofollow is defnitely a nice way to reward the people that participate in the discussions :)

I’d be interested to know if anyone found any downsides to the dofollow thing. lemme know if you find any. So far i think it’s great, and it does a great job in enticing people to leave a comment and join in the discussions.

The Do-Follow plugin seems to work really well. Thanks for the mention.

This is a great idea. I have seen so many benefits and I have been able to network with great bloggers. What benefits have you seen so far?

It is a win win for everyone as far as I can tell.
Comments are increasing, conversations are up. Link love is being passed around.
Spam was a problem, but since I activated the spam filters it has been way down.

As long as you don’t get spammed like crazy, the risks are probably pretty minimal.

Bryan,
I have not had too much trouble with getting spammed, especially since I installed the the wordpress spam filter.

I use Akismet and Peter’s Custom Anti-Spam. To be fair, I have not had enough volume of comments to know if they will continue to hold up. To date, they have been very good, but we shall see.

I never heard of Peter’s Custom Anti-Spam, what does that do?

Hi I’ve put my ‘Do Follow’ blog post link in my name’s link above as I note (via my Firefox developers plugin) that links in posts remain ‘No Follow’ was that intentional on your part?

Hey Clive, thanks for letting me know. I actually had been meaning to fix that problem.
I had installed the DoFollow Plugin, but had forgotten to activate it…oops…thanks for letting me know.

Generally I also moderate links in the comments to include only links that are relevant.

No follow is a bunch of rubbish. The spamming bots have no idea whether your page is or isn’t using the tag, so you get spammed either way. Secondly, not all the search engines even use the tag making it even more pathetic.

How much time do you have to commit to comment moderation if you decide to use follow links (sounded easier to say than “not using not follow”!).

Any more or less than if you don’t use the plugin?

If you have a lot of comments for a particular post, you might end up with hundreds of external links. This has been known to dilute the sites page rank, and cause it to loose favor with Google.

I also removed the nofollow from my blog. It seems to atrtract more visitors…

I just installed a plugin. Maybe is not the same but I hope it will work fine. I was getting a lot of spam already so the plugin plus Akismet will help me to manage comments.
Thanks for sharing!

I do not think that “no follow” ever reduced comment spam. I think taking it off is a great way to encourage participation and reward those who are spending time add to add value to the website. I think that if you dislike a comment enough to make it “no follow,” why not just delete the link from the website?

I agree with you Tim, but I do think larger blogs that have huge amounts of traffic and have huge PR do benefit from having “NO Follow” tags. I know if I had the traffic that Problogger has, I would more than likely use a No follow tag or at least put a widget in place that removes the nofollow after so many comments.
