BlogDesk Wordpress Editor

Posted by Pixelhead

BlogDesk ScreenshotI just published Make Money with Viddler, my first post using the free Wordpress blog editor Blog Desk. The post, Make Money with Viddler was actually rewritten several times. The first draft was started several weeks ago, and had been sitting in my dashboard editor waiting to be finished. Looking at it today, I thought “lets get this puppy done and published”.

Well I had done a considerable amount of editing, and clicked “save and continue editing”, after which I went and made lunch. Coming back from lunch, I found out that it had not been saved, but I had actually been logged out of the editor.

Earlier in the day, I actually had been checking out Karthik’s 12 Wordpress Editors post, which I had commented on some time ago. Since reading it, I had been meaning to give some of the editors mentioned in the post a whirl. So since BlogDesk was the first one on his list, I thought what the heck.

After downloading the program and installing on my desktop, I had to then add the PixelHeadonline login info by going to File>Manage Blogs>New. After putting in my info BlogDesk then uploaded all the categories on the blog.

After writing, I then clicked a little green arrow in the tool bar, and the post was published.

BlogDesk Pluses

First, I like the fact that it is easy to use because of its similarity to the actual wordpress editor. Second, I like the Tag feature. I have never used tags on my post, but with this I guess I will be using them. Third, and this is the primary reason that I like it, is that it saves the posts on my desk top, no more clicking save, or having my progress disappear like it has done so many times with Wordpress’s Default editor.

Several Problems

My initial impression is that it is very similar to the wordpress editor, but there are a few differences. One, I linked up a couple of words, but then wanted to unlink them but there was no unlink button available. I actually had to go into the html view to edit it out.

Loading Pictures

I also did not like the photo editing button, as the option to add a pic from my Flickr account was not an option. When you click the Insert Image button, unless you click on the arrow next to the button and choose “external link” it immediately goes to the files on the desk top. Maybe I am abnormal, in that I use Flickr…maybe its just me.

Then when you do click the “External link” option, a box comes up with a browse box, and there is really no where designated to put the external link. I however pasted it into the box next to the browse button and that seemed to work fine.

I also had a problem with the second post I published using BlogDesk, which was Photoshop tip:Using Guidelines to Crop post. There were two pictures in the post, but only one of the two pictures showed up in the published post.

Final Opinion

It seems to be a fine editor, and maybe I just need to get used to it, but I think I am going to test drive a few more Wordpress editors before I settle in.

What Editor Do You Use?

So what editor do you use. Got any recommendations for me?

The making Money part of the post was about the advertising options available on Viddler. You can make money by making videos with Viddler and then when someone clicks on an add you get credit. It is essentially a PPC program.

Blogdesk seems to be more of an entry level editor.. though I would surely try it out.

Jalj…I’ll use it for a while since it is so easy to use.
Vincent, I have used the default editor for ever, but the last time I lost my work was the last straw…I really hate when that happens.
There are a couple of others on the list I want to try, just have to make time.

I used Blogger for so long before switching to WP, I still write my articles on that blog, publish, then copy/paste over to my WP site and touch it up so it’s not a duplicate. I just find their interface so simple and easy to use, and it is always auto saving. I know, I’m weird.

I downloaded, and actually paid for a Mac blog editor called MarsEdit. There are many, many things that I like about it, compared to the default wordpress editor. However, the one thing that’s missing is wordpress tags (which I do use). So, about 75% of the time I end up writing my posts on wordpress anyway … since I was having to go in and edit every post to add tags.

Todd, I am having a hard time using the other editors, just because I am in the habit of using the default editor.

I am actually having a bit of trouble with Blogdesk at the moment. It won’t let me access any saved posts I had been working on or save any posts that I may be currently working on.

Try Windows Live Writer - personally, I found it rather good.

I am going to have to do something, as Blog Desk is really annoying me. Not being able to get at ongoing posts is really not good.
