Environmental News for May 2008

Posted by Pixelhead

I just got a Greenpeace newsletter that told me about a whaling scandal that could prove to be good news for the campaign to stop whaling. According to the Greenpeace article Stolen whale meat scandal rocks Japan, whale meat was being hidden in crew quarters and shipped back home as “cardboard” or “Salted Food Stuffs”, and then sold on the black market. Check out the Greenpeace articles for details and to add your letter to the Japanese Government.

A cool idea.  eBooks - Another Way to go Green!  I never thought of ebooks as being a green product, but if you read an ebook instead of a real book, it does reduce paper usage.

Did you help Stumbleupon to plant some trees?

As part of the Stumbleupon program I made the post Hey George, Stumble and Plant a Tree about it and I also joined Friends of The Forest which is one of the program partners.

I joined http://www.wecansolveit.org. Get 20 friends to sign up and you can get a free cotton t-shirt.

Lifestraw is a personal water filtration device that can be carried with a person very easily. Water born disease kills nearly 6000 people a day due to drinking unclean drinking water. Water filtration at the individual level.

Eva White, one of the top commentators for April 08,  has a post an interesting post, Biofuels. Salvation of the world?

I got an email newsletter from Rebecca Young of Care2.com and in the newsletter, I was asked to sign a petition to Ban Deadly Pesticides that Kill Wildlife. I was taken to the site which is a site that has a bunch of petitions you can sign. I actually signed 3 or 4 petitions before I had to get back to work. Stop by the site and sign some petitions to encourage your political officials to act responsibly.

I was looking at asphalt alternatives in order to put in a new driveway, and I heard about a plastic grid system that is made out of 100% recycled plastic. After Googling Asphalt Alternatives, I came across EcoGrid. So you put down the grid and cover it with gravel or stone and the stone is kept in place by the grid. Sounds pretty cool.

I signed another petition to Create a New Electric Car Classification. Check it out…and sign the petition. Did you know the Government limits the speed of LSV(low speed Vehicles) to 25mph. A new classification is being requested to increase the speeds to 35-40 mph. At this speed, these electric vehicles would become more practical.

Kim, aka Spostare Duro sent me a Facebook email for the Stop Climate Change App. Its a pretty cool little app, that actually donates money to The Nature Conservancy for doing stuff like sending invites to your Facebook friends and playing games. If you have a bit of spare time, stop by and add the App and earn some money for The Nature Conservancy.

Got any environment news you want to share?

It angers me that there still is whale meat being sold in Japan. This is a horrible practice and it makes me very upset - i’m happy that it was uncovered. Nice post!

I think that is the problem, no matter how you ban, as long as there is market, people will still kill and sold in black market… and I know the profit is huge.

I’m with you on this one to hopefully stop the whaling. Simply beautiful creatures that deserve much better, heck if we leave them alone they’ll out live us. Anywho, I’ve also joined the Friends of the Forest campaign. Seems like a well run cause and hopefully we can all make a difference!

I planted a garden. I have also stumbled for the trees! Just saving the world one post at a time Pixel? Good to see that people do care. My moms husband has purchased an electric Vespa sort of thing to ride to work. lol I just hope that we aren’t to late. I loved the documentary by Al Gore and saw on the news that some of the clips used were CGI actually taken from other movies. It was very disappointing!

This whole issue has been in the press for the last few months in Australia. I believe as long as there is a market one way or another whales will be killed and the meat sold whether legally or on the black market. I think the key to this whole issue is to educate the people so they do not want to eat whale.

Yes, e-books do help mother nature in not wasting paper, and I believe so do blogs. The internet is such a huge necessity in this age. If the internet didn’t exist, where would we store all that information? Could all the paper in the world store the world wide web? I wonder.

Every little bit helps. He used to run an organically grown plant nursery. We closed it because people could care less here. Price was what determined there buying decisions.

I can’t possibly understand why anyone would want to eat a whale? We watched Star Trek the other day in the episode where they had to go back in time to earth and get a whale because an alien needed it to stop attacking them but all the whales were extinct in the future…while i’m not sure of the probability of that actually happening, it is nice to do whatever you can to help :) You never know how what we do today effects the future.

Ridiculous. I’m not a vegetarian and pro “eat animals” but please only those who are not endangered… I hope one day in the future most humans wake up and see what the world is really about. Tiger penis and whale meat won’t make their life any better.

I am shocked to hear about the scandal. How much can a man be cruel to the animals. The culprits should be punished hard.

I hate to be pessimistic but this will not end the whaling industry. Anyone who considers it OK to kill whales will not be appalled by this “scandal”.

As long as there is greed and hunger in the world, people will find a way to abuse the system. Unfortunate but true. Until we can solve more of the worlds basic needs shortages, scandals like this will continue. Like it or not, we are a population of carnivores.

It’s awesome that web 2.0 is useful not just for web socialization or marketing but helping the environment as well. If we could plant or save a tree for every stumble, digg or delicious then we’re well on our way to a better environment.

Information on the internet is provided for everything. If we are in need of some information then we can have a look online and we may find the information we need. Internet is the biggest source of information.

A common misconception is that “paperless” is environmentally beneficial. When you order paper, you are ordering for new trees to be planted as well. When you use an eBook reader, you are using batteries that contain acid and other molecular compositions that can be extremely harmful to the environment.

The internet and electronic media has definitely change the way you receive and create information - in my idea it is the greatest invention of the 20th to 21st century. Just imagine the world without wikipedia and google - we’d still be dusting off heavy encyclopedias and spending hours in the library for something that can be found on the internet in literally seconds.

E-books to save the environment is a novel idea — i think a simple but brilliant one. So much of information that we use in day to day business never makes it to paper — and it just makes sense that e-books be maximized so that the environment is helped.

Everytime this topic comes up it makes my heart ache. Whaling is horrifically sad. I hate all the dolphin killings as well…what amazing creatures that are sentenced to death because of ignorance.
