Wired Electric Car Article

Posted by Pixelhead

I just started reading the cover story on this month Wired about the Future of the Electric Car. It’s a pretty interesting article from what I have read thus far. The story is about Shai Agassi and his Audacious Plan to Put Electric Cars on the Road.

Check it out and let me know what you think.

I will be off line until Friday night, due to going on a Men’s retreat.

Well that was certainly an interesting read though I think the whole idea is a long way off, not because of the technology, but to convince and oil driven world that oil is no longer the way.

People say money makes the world go round but really it is oil that drives the money - without oil everything will change in my opinion.

It will be great when it happens though. Should have happened years ago.

Well, the future of electric seems dim to me, I am not sure if we have an electric charger unit instead of Gas pumps? look weired to me. But this idea is innovative enough to catch everyone’s eyeballs.

Thanks!

Simply audacious! They gave quite a bit of description as to his physical characteristics that threw me off a bit. Then I realized the article was 10 pages long!!!

I guess if you have a plan to get the world off oil, it won’t be short!

We’ll see… I guess that in 10-20 years it’ll be there, when they’ll solve the “battery” problems (too heavy, not enough power, etc…). And I’m curious about what will happen to country driven by oil !

Have you seen the Chevy VOLT? I haven’t done much research on it, but from what I hear it’s pretty cool.

For me, so far, the best electric car is Fisker Karma, google it, really nice design! This guy used to work for the BMW, I think he designed BMW Z8.

To use electric cars, world economy has to take a big hit. In some articles I read before, experts estimate that 20 years minimum is needed to convert all that is necessary.

Just try to imagine how many industries will be influenced by this. It’s not only about oil refineries and gas pumps. There is lot more then that. Not to mention the first step that needs to be made, conquering the lobby that won’t allow the birth of the electric car.

I am not much into automobiles, but I am intrigued by your comment that you are off on a Men’s retreat. What is that all about? Will you be willing to share it with us?

The future cars will be mostly using the environmental friendly concept, which are reuse the sea water or the nitrogen to become the main fuels…

@Lourdes: I agree, the Fisker Karma is gorgeous. Wikipedia puts it at around US$ 80,000 - too rich for me, but I don’t think it’s unreasonable!

interesting article. i do like the fact that he’s separating the battery from the car, which will hopefully allow other car manufacturers to get into the game eventually, and allow upgrades to the batteries in a convenient manner. and i think it’s smart to focus on countries like israel and denmark, and states like hawaii. good read. :) let’s see where it goes.

i would absolutely love to see electric cars on the road. I doubt though in the next 1 to 2 years they can get a big surplus of them out there. I think with todays technology its very possible. Imagine a H2 being electric lol.

it about time people start thinking environmentally. i hope people realize the importance to save our planet from all the man made pollution we inflict. this so called electric car is a definite alternative in lessening pollution

Nice article!!! I googled this car, found it starting from 75,000$… I wouldn’t be expected to ride into this car anytime soon. lol
I like the fact that they r focusing on particular countries!

Great post, and about the fact an electric car to prevail in the future is good due to global warming, but it has the probability of making a success 25/100 in ma view point..

Electric cars are very close to being ready. Within the next 12 months, I will buy a Green Vehicles Triac or an Aptera Typ1. They’ll both be available for purchase within a few months. Then in 2 years I’ll buy a Chevy Volt.

I can’t make gasoline, but I can make electricity. And when the panels on my roof are paid for in 20 years, its all free. Its just like buying a house with a mortgage. By then everyone else will be paying $10 or more for a gallon of gas.

Electric cars aren’t really that ‘green’ considering how much oil is used in the production of the electricity. Solar and wind power is the way to go.

I just read that Nissan builds test models of electric car. It is said that the electric vehicle, set for sale in 2010, carried a 300 kilogram (660 pounds) lithium-ion battery and still zipped around a Nissan Motor Co. test course, accelerating more quickly than comparable gas-engine cars. Electric car is not just less air pollution, but also less noise pollution. Hopefully the price will be reasonable.

The Aptera looks like the best choice for the near future, you can actually reserve one now for $500, and at $27,000, it’s running a lot cheaper than most of the competition. There is however the drawback that they look like a rolling ipod.

Then again, I bet some people like that!

Every car maker has an electric alternative to its gas-engine cars but I think that the problem is that people are too much accustomed to gas-engine cars and they don’t want changes.
And, everyone heard that gossips about government involvement in pact with gas-engine motor makers, didn’t he? ;o)

I agree that electric cars are not very green. It takes alot of natural resources to make the electricity. Solar seems the best to me.

Electricts car are ok when the electricity is produced from wind or solar panels. Eventually when it come from atomic energy. But when it came from coal like in my country then it’s as bad as gasoline :(

In India there is a company called REVA that did put up small two seater electric cars for sale. Unfortunately it did not do too well last decade and the company stopped production. Maybe if that car was launched today it would have more takers.

I like the way he thinks of things, not just cleaning up a little like some of the others were doing to help the environment, but thinking about changing big things! Great read.

The lightningcarcompany have an interesting site they are in the process of developing the same technology. They claim their car will be able to travel up to 200 miles from a 10 minute charge. Although electric cars aren’t yet a green solution they are a step in the right direction, both in terms of global warming and escalating petrol prices. It will be interesting to see what happens if and when Hawaii and Israel start trialing the technology.

I think the most interesting part in all of this electric car debate is the fact that all of a sudden the huge companies are pulling old patents and technology they’ve had in storage for quite some time and they’re putting them to use. I’m really interested in what Chevy is doing with the Volt. Of course, the Tesla Roadster is another fantastic electric car design that’s bound to take off in the next year or two.

Ultimately, I think there isn’t so much one magic bullet so much as a combination of a lot of different approaches until the best or most economical one is found. Algae Biodiesel, Wind Power, Solar Power, Electric Cars, Fuel Cell Cars, Hydrogen power, all of them are to varying degrees better than what we have now by themselves, but if we uses a bit of each where appropriate, I think the world will be better off.

Well there has to be something that replaces oil. The whole world economy is falling at the wayside as oil controls everything. Its a start, lets see what will happen, the more demand the more monies in the industry and the more money the more people will be testing new ideas. Maybe someone can figure out a way to have the batteries last longer, I mean look at how much has changed is such a small period. Digg the post.

I’ve been researching electric cars a little. Despite my cynicism about these companies, I thought it would be a fun project. Here’s the kicker: Lithium Ion batteries (the new hotness) have a power density 1/20th of gasoline, even adjusting for the poor efficiency of gasoline motors. If 10 gallons of gasoline carries you 300 miles, you need a theoretical 1200lbs of LiIon batteries for the same range.

Electric cars would be a very good idea but it’s just convincing all the road users that they will be better than a petrol car. Since oil prices seem to be rising all the time we probably won’t have a choice but as everyone is saying, it’s making the batteries last long enough to drive at least 300 or 400 miles without needing to recharge.

Gas-powered vehicles will soon make way to it’s alternatives. Solar and Hydrogen are making big pushes in advancement from my understanding and I, for one, cannot wait for the day I can say bubye to the gas stations.
