Link Building Tip - Deep Linking

Posted by Pixelhead

This weeks link building post is about getting links to your sites deep pages.

Link Building Video Review:

Build links to the deep pages so that when people use your keywords to search for your site, both your home page and sub-page show up in the SERPs(Search Engine Results Page) for your target keyword phrase.

Where can I get deep links?

For blogs and sites with blogs, use the url of the sub-page in the url field when making comments on Do Follow blogs. For both sites with blogs and sites with out blogs, there are many directories that accept deep links. Here is a link to DirectoryCritic’s DeepLinks category of directories that accept deep links. Do you build links to your deep pages?

By deep pages you mean pages other than the home page?

Exactly Paul. I was also reading an SEOBook article, that said you should try to focus on more than just a few of the interior pages. For example if your Real Estate Resources page got a ton of traffic, you might be tempted to build a ton of links to it. The article I was reading suggested that you do take advantage of the traffic, but also try to get some links to other pages too.

Oh, thanks for letting me know about the template issue earlier…

It makes sense if you focus only on the home page the other pages will not generate as many links as they can.

Pulling your latest blog post up as a link when you post on someone’s blog is always a great option.

This really does do this for you. But I agree, just use your deeper pages (should they be relevant?).

I try to deep link where possible - I find most directories only allow for top level submission so I use blogs and articles to try and target inner pages.

The issue I hit a lot at the moment is that linking to inner pages when blog commenting I get an error message saying “you are posting too quickly” even if I haven’t posted before.

I think this is some kind of spam protection that kind of backfires for me.

The worst thing about this is that after the error message, I go back to the comment and my whole comment has gone! So I am wary about trying to deep link in this manner now without copying to clipboard first.

Does anyone else have this issue or is it just my deep link URLs are particularly long?

JBO, I have run across this a few times as well. If you are writing a good long comment, saving it first might not be a bad idea. If I run into this situation, many times I will try to find another way to contact the owner to let them know about the problem.

I think it’s to do with the quite popular Akismet plugin (if that is the spelling)

It took a while to work out what was going wrong. Unfortunately the bloggers I did contact about it didn’t really know how to resolve it so I have taken a lot to using the root URL.

There are an increasing number of useful directories accepting deeplinks - here’s a good one: sonicsyn -
But blogsroll links from blogs are good, as are links from posts and comments - all good.

About the video, it’s an interesting method of delivering a message. Would it get less indexed by Google because there is no text to parse? Just curious. Interesting post. One of my sites gets a huge 80% bounce rate and I was told to look up deep linking or intersite linking to improve. Hopefully it’ll improve the average stay time of 30 seconds.

Duri,
The review is the way to get the info from the video to be parsed. I probably should have done a better job transcribing what was said. When I was at the Podcamp in Philly several weekends ago, one of the methods for optimizing video I learned was to transcribe the content of the video in a review somewhere on your blog post. Not only does it help with the serps, but if someone is deaf, they can read what was said in the video.

Nice info on the Deep Links. I always look at it this way… Deep links improves the ranks of interior pages, but on a well structured site also send link juice back to the homepage. So by optimizing internal pages, it will also send some juice back home. Especially for large sites that are not fully indexed, deep links to interior pages is a major help. ~ Bill

Nice tips. I really haven’t put much though into deep linking, but I can see the benefit now. I try to link to older blog posts from newer posts when applicable in my blogs, hoping that will help drive some influence down the line in my sites, but that might not be enough

I agree that deep linking should play an imprtant part in your link building strategy, it is also worth noting that a page created with an infomative article or blog post helps as a page to link to and gives less chance of the link being dropped.

Thanks for the directory for deep links.

I primarily use blog comments and articles to deep link. For instance, your post is relevant to one I did on dofollow backlinking. I provide a list of dofollow directories and blogs on that page.

So I put anchor text for it in the name box and it’s url in the Web page box. That creates a link to that particular page of my blog - a deep link.

Warmly,

Linda P. Morton

I use this practice all the time. I know how important deep linking is and can vouch that it works. Good of you though to help other people understand. I’m not sure why, but I wasn’t able to access the video in your post (maybe it is a problem at my end).

Nice post on the deep links and the strategy.

The best thing with deep links is that they will help your posts and those posts will get some power to your home page. So you win on two battlefields with pointing links to your posts.

Of course you would have to be careful with deep linking, if your website is designed so that the homepage is the “all-to” page but a deeper page is getting ranked higher/more traffic then you may miss out on some conversion. Then again, you could just optimize the pages that get ranked high.

I had no idea that links on a SERP that have a sublink are much more likely to get clicked, that’s really good info to know!

I’m definitely going to apply that to my site design scheme.

Aye yai yai…As if getting links to your homepage isn’t enough, you have to perform linking for each of your core posts as well. Sigh…so much to do, so little time.

I knew there was a reason why I’ve subscribed to your posts. Good stuff, more work for me however, but it’s worth it.

Yea, just a bit. Since the deep pages have more content and are more closely related to the selected keywords, the amount of link building should be a lot less than the home page.

Ah, some great insight (as we have all come to expect from you, of course).

It’s too often that people focus on their outer/home pages for linking without giving any attention to the (easier to build links to) deep pages.

I understand the basics of deep linking, but would it not still be better to have more links to your main page rather than a few links to the main page and a few links to the deeper sub page?

Nice post on deep linking. I don’t understand how that makes you show up twice on google though. Also what are corn stoves? lol.

Beztar, a Corn Stove is a home heating unit that uses shelled dried corn as the fuel. They function much like a wood pellet stove. Corn however, burns more efficiently than wood.

Solinkable, yes,you want to have more links pointing to your home page than sub pages, but if you can get your subpages to rank it will help your overall page rank, and if you can get the subpage and homepage to show up in the serps together at number 1 and 2, you will be golden.
