Poverty Bites

Posted by Pixelhead

Poverty is something which I really don’t know a thing about. I have the priviledge of living in a country that has one of the highest standards of living of any country. At periods in my life, I had very little money, but I still had the resources of those around me which enabled me to maintain a somewhat comfortable lifestyle.

In spite of living in one of the richest nations on Earth, as the post “Mommy are we Poverty?” illustrates, poverty still exists here in the USA.

Below is a little video I made for the Blog Action Day post.

How can you help fight poverty?

Well these are just a few suggestions for fighting poverty. As many other people believe, I also believe that poverty is something that we can prevent. With all the knowledge and wealth in this world, people do not need to die of hunger. Everyone deserves to live in a clean, safe environment that allows them to flourish.

So what about you, what do you do to fight poverty?

You’d be surprised how just kindness from someone can encourage someone to feel as if they are worthy of the help. Many persons in poverty are abused simply because of their financial status.

Getting those who are in a position to help the most, businesses, media, etc, just do not care. Like I wrote in “Mommy, are we poverty?” The Katies of the world become an afterthought instead of a protected one. We are a people of plenty. But we lack desire to nurture life.

Talking social change. Walking social change. Without the action piece, we will eventually destroy each other.

Another great post that I can relate to as I live in South Africa.

One of the things I believe in doing is enabling someone to better themselves. Helping them find a job so that they can fend for themselves.

I don’t give money to everyone who asks, I give where I trust. A lot of people just turn around and buy alcohol and drugs. That’s not helping at all.

In my opinion, respect is a major player in helping someone get to a position where they can support themselves and their families. Respect someone as a person and they will find it much easier to climb out of the hole that they are in.

Most people in poverty don’t have debt and make little income. That’s already half of the puzzle to financial success…

Respect!

In the richer nations we can take our comfortable lives for granted, and a little help can go a long way. I think the main issue here is a lack of seeing what is going on outside out own lives.

The sweat shop thing is a great example. Before this has recently been highlighted I wouldn’t have even thought where or how this cheap clothing was made - wouldn’t have even given it a thought.

Since having my eyes opened to it - I would certainly think twice about buying it.

It is amazing how some simple things can help make a difference. It doesn’t need a few people doing something big, it takes a lot of people just doing something!

And as kiva.org will show it really does not take much money at all to help someone help themself. Great post Adam!

Kim, its sad that the Katies of the world suffer in silence, due to no one having a clue. Wal-mart where her fictitious mom worked should have known, and should have made sure that Child care was afforded to this example of an under paid single mother.

Tertius, I could not agree with you more about the issue of respect.

JBO, It does seem to be a problem which we must be vigilant to increase our awareness of companies that sell sweatshop goods. Here are a couple of sites that maybe of use in this endeavor:
1. CoopAmerica Sweatshop Resources
2.Sweatshop.org
3.The National Mobilization Against Sweatshops

This is an interesting post. We definitely have to fight poverty and i agree with what you have said. Those are good ways. There are many people who might not be as fortunate as us.

it’s good of you to sponsor kids, and it’s great that you highlight kiva.

i love the idea of kiva. :) am currently unable to contribute so i merely put up its banner on my blog, and wrote a post on it.

i also turn to sites like freerice, the hunger site, and goodsearch, as ways to help alleviate poverty online, with no cost to me, and in ways which are quite easy (posted their banners as well).

it’s great that you also participated in blog action day. :)
