Comments for Everyone, Links for Blogs!

I have been getting a ton of comments of late, and have a Commenting policy of only giving links to sites that have blogs. If the comment is really good, and the site does not have a blog, occasionally, I have been known to remove the link and place it at then end of the comment. If you don’t have a link to your comment signature, when I visit your site, and I will, in order to get a link from Pixelheadonline, you need to have a blog associated with your site, and linked to from the front page. So I generally look for the word “blog” or “weblog” on the front page.

Using blogs for SEO purposes is something that I am not entirely against, but I don’t want to encourage sites without blogs to come and add a little sentence and expect to receive a link to their site with a keyword rich link. If a site owner that does not have a blog, is visiting this blog or another blog, then she or he probably understands the importance of link building, but does not understand what a blog can do for their site. I believe that every site out there should have a blog.

Do you Have a Blog?

Tasting The Ecstasy of a Blogosphere Newcomer

When Adam invited me to guest post, I think I was intimidated as this is my first time guest-posting. I guess that makes me a virgin. ;-)

He and I speak infrequently, but we spend a lot of time in the same environments. I’ve observed his personality and mindset by way of Twitter, Stumbleupon, Facebook, this blog, and other places online. He always takes time out from his professional interests, to address issues concerning our environment and things he believes in. I see him as someone trustworthy, which is sometimes difficult to find in the blogosphere. I feel I’m in good hands here. ;-)

Where to begin? Hmm..

Well, I’m Kimberly Bock. Most people know me as SpostareDuro, which is Italian for “Move hard”. I operate 2 blogs. “Learning SEO Basics” and “Yicrosoft Directory Girl”.

Learning SEO Basics (about page) began as an experiment..a ‘tester’. Before 7 months ago, I had never even heard of SEO. A year prior to that, I did not know what a blog was either. I knew how to search Google, play virtual games, and download music though! haha I spent too many years with my head in the wrong places and needed direction. That’s yet another post!

A friend of mine that works for MicroStrategy as a database marketer (Raymond Borhan) thought I’d like SEO and gave me a popular book entitled, “Search Engine Optimization For Dummies” by Peter Kent. This was enough to make me want more. I thought, “Wow, even a nobody like me can have a website that draws thousands upon thousands of visitors if I learn SEO!” So, I Googled to find more resources to help me learn, since there were no offline schools for it. What I came across, was Kalena Jordan’s “Search Engine College“. I enrolled, passed SEO101 and 201 with flying colors, purchased a domain of my own in October & have begun to expand and flourish in just a short period of time. Page rank does not hold the weight it once had, but it is still regarded as beneficial for link building strategies, as quality sites are likely to use this as a tool in deciding to link to your site. Learning SEO Basics has a PR4. Not too shabby for starters.

My sites motto is ‘as I learn, I pass it on’. It has grown into more of a resource site, as I have an appreciation for microblogging. This offers a platform of appreciation for those who have quality posts, from the A-lister to fellow newbies. It also provides a means for others to gain further education if they too are learning SEO and related interests. (social media, etc) I’ve had a surprising degree of success in networking sites such as Sphinn and Stumbleupon. Either people love to love me or love to hate me. Not usually in-between. hmm..Maybe because I speak my mind and encourage others to have a mind of their own as well?

The bulk of my the education that I’ve acquired online has come from places such as Sphinn, Mixx, Stumbleupon, Search Engine Watch and hundreds of fellow bloggers. Like Adam..(haha..I’m schmoozing, can ya tell?)

Some of my favorite spots include SEO Book (Aaron Wall), AimClear Blog (Marty Weintraub), The Other Blokes Blog (Barry Welford), Huamah - Trail of the Fire Horse (David Harry), SEO Design Solutions (Jeffrey Smith), SEO 2.0 (Tad or onreact), SEO By The Sea (Bill Slawski) and of course, My Online World (Adam ‘Pixelheadonline’)

Yicrosoft Directory Girl (about page) began as a contest entry for SEONoobs, now known as ebuz’d. Entrants were to see who could establish best rank using a term that had not previously been found in the SERPS (not once!). They chose “yicrosoft directory”. Long story short, I had a real love for social media so I designed a site that would address everything that you guys write! I love finding new things, referencing you, and discussing or otherwise have fun and learn. I also use it to express the main facets of my personality..good bad or indifferent. I’m not always politically correct or express popular opinion. I’d rather talk truth than bologna.

So far, blogging has connected me to an entire galaxy of people that I would not have otherwise met. Like you. :-)

Fortunately, YDG PR went from 0 to 6 with in two short months. I’m very lucky.

I love learning and experiencing new things, participating in green promotion a fresh brewed cup of Seattles Best coffee or Peets brew (talking coffee..I don’t do alcohol.), and real friends as opposed to hoopla friendships. ;-)

Well, I hope to meet all of you at my house! Never feel intimidated there. It’s just as much your house as it is mine!

Life is short. Don’t forget that hand helping hand is always best in life and career!

Life is short. Until later, have fun living, learning and loving.

Thanks for having me Adam!

Google Vs Technorati

The other day I noticed that the Incoming Links notification was being delivered by Google Blog Search instead of Technorati. I went onto the Wordpress forum and found that the change to Google was made with Wordpress 2.31, however there is a pluggin that will change it back to Technorati. In the forum, there is a mix of those who like Google vs Technorati. With Technorati, I had noticed for awhile that my incoming links were rather spammy at times only showing a few scrapper sites that had stolen my content. That in itself is another blog post. Freakin Scrappers.

Since Google has been delivering the results I have not been seeing any of the crap, but I have not been seeing any of the good either. Back several weeks ago I had made a video about why I blog for a group vlogging mashup Darren Rowse, the Problogger was working on. The link to Darren’s mashup finally showed up today in my incoming links stream, but then I went back a little later to check it out again, and the link is no where to be seen.

Sure Google is huge and will not have down time like Technorati, but all those Google data centers that Google uses to compile its results seem to provide some pretty terrible results for the incoming links stream. I will be installing the pluggin ASAP. If you have linked to me since I upgraded, and I did not receive a notification, I am really sorry if I did not respond. Please let me know if I have missed any one.

Has anyone else noticed a difference? What is your opinion? Which do you like better Google or Technorati for supplying your incoming links notification?

Spam Filter Working Overtime

Askimet is a great spam filter, but at times it does too good of a job. I have had a number of people email me telling me that their comments have gone into the spam file. Usually, I try to go through the spam folder to see if any good comments have been caught. However, this week I am on vacation, and the amount of time I am online is drastically reduced.

Tuesday night I checked the spam folder and well over spam 3000 comments had been caught by the filter. I checked about 10 pages, and there was only one comment that could be considered to be a good comment. The rest of the comments were deleted.

Yesterday, I did check several times throughout the day, and there were no good comments caught by the spam filter. This morning, after our breakfast trip to Palm Beach, I checked the Spam folder, and well over 1500 spam comments have been caught. Sorry to say, but I am not going to be going through all those comments on my vacation.

Spam Filter Caught Your Comments?

If you have made a comment, and it was not published, but feel it was a good comment, I am sorry, and hope you will comment again.

  1. Don’t leave comments with excessive links, as anything over two links is filtered.
  2. Make sure your comment relates to the post.

How do you handle spam comments? Do you have commenting guidelines?

The Age Of Conversation Bum Rush (For A Very Good Cause)

John from Freelance Folder sent a shout on Digg my way and then I added FreshPeel on Twitter this morning, who then asked me to pass the info on about the book sale to as many people as I could. So I not only Dugg, Stumbled,Tweeted, and commented, but I am also posting a little post about the sale of the “The Age Of Conversation Bum Rush”. According to John’s Digg submission,

We are launching The Age of Conversation up the Amazon charts. The book “brings together over 100 of the world’s leading marketers, writers, thinkers and creative innovators in a ground-breaking and unusual publication.” All of the proceeds generated from book sales and referrals will be donated to Variety, The Children’s Charity.

Initially, I had heard about the book when Valeria Maltoni the Conversation Agent was talking about it with Joe our Tech Support from MCBSConsulting.com at the BlogPhiladelphia Unconference.  It sounds like a really great book that I will have to get ASAP.
