The last post in this series on Social Bookmarks was Social Bookmarking with Delicious, where in I introduced the series and highlighted the post with a video about Delicious, which you should watch if you have not done so. This long over due social bookmarking video goes over my opinion about Delicious and suggests a few other social bookmarking sites that would be better used for the general purpose of link building.
Is Delicious Good for Link Building?
My advice, don’t use Delicious as a means of getting direct one way links since all Delicious links are currently no-follow. However, if you concentrate on creating a site that is truly helpful or entertaining, then visitors will gladly bookmark your website in Delicious as well as any of the other bookmarking sites that your visitors use. If you get a ton of Delicious bookmarks within a short period, your page will go to the home page, which will result in more people visiting your site. The thing that is important about Delicious, is that it is a bookmarking site, which means if they do bookmark you, they are doing so because they intend on revisiting.
Link Building with Social Bookmarking
Using Social bookmarking sites for link building is and can be done very easily. There are services such as those offered by WLmarketing that will create profiles on numerous social bookmarking sites. There are also services, such as Social Submitter, that allow you to easily post a link to many bookmarking sites at once. I myself have only tried one of the mass submission services one time, and did receive questionable results. Many of the links that are built with these tools have little if any link juice. When submitted like this, unless you take the time to develop your profile on each of these sites, the traffic return will be minimal if any.
A Few Other Social Bookmarking Sites
Digg- Who has not heard of Digg, if you have not, here are some Digg posts for your to read. Links are good links, and if you get to the front page of Digg, expect a ton of traffic…make sure your host can handle the traffic load.
Stumbleupon-links are either redirects or nofollow, so there is no juice here. But again Stumbleupon can give you a lot of traffic. Here are some Stumbleupon posts if you need more info.
Mixx- Within the last month I started using Mixx on a regular basis. With a little regular Mixxing my Karma is already over 400…woot. I have not done any reviews of Mixx yet, but at least one of these is forthcoming. Link juice is questionable for mixx since many of the links are redirects. However, it does as I said before have a very positive community. I also like the ability to create community portals that closely resemble your website.
Solinkable – I just started using Solinkable after one of the site owners left a comment here. Since that time I have come to really like the ease of using Solinkable. Its “Promoted/Queued Links system follows the Digg system, but Gravity follows that of Reddit.” meaning you can vote on stories that others submit and your friends can do the same. Its a pretty new site, however the thing that I like about it that the links are all direct, and blog links that are added show up as trackbacks. Since it is such a young site, I would sign up and add Solinkable to your Bookmarks toolbar. Visit the Solinkable blog and sign up to receive updates of developments as the happen.
Social bookmarks are just another source of potential links. As Wayne said in his post about Social Submitter, use common sense when using social bookmarks. When link building in general, remember to use variety, so over doing it with the bookmarks could potentially hurt you.
I am still on vacation in OBX, and will be posting on the Social Bookmarking series starting next week. When I started working on the intial post Social Bookmarks post, I found this video from CommonCraft.com…love their videos…the first one I remember watching is the Twitter video.
This video is a good one for Social Bookmarking, more precisely it seems to be a good video for Delicious, which just turned 5 and has over 5.3 million users and over 180 million web pages added..
With 5.3 million users, if you could manage to get a page listed and voted enough, your site could show up in the delicious search results and get a really nice traffic boost.
Until next week, watch the social bookmarking video and let me know your thoughts.
Do you use delicious? If so, add me, anton_donkus, to your delicious network, and I will do the same. Leave your delicious profile url in your comment. And if you wouldn’t mind, would you bookmark the Link Building Category page…I want to see how much traffic it will bring to the page…thanks
This will be the first in a series of posts about using Social Bookmarking sites for Link Building. Social Bookmarks you ask, what the heck are Social Bookmarks?
Googling “Social Bookmarks”, the first entry in the SERPS is the beloved Wikipedia, which says:
In a social bookmarking system, users save links to web pages that they want to remember and/or share. These bookmarks are usually public, and can be saved privately, shared only with specified people or groups, shared only inside certain networks, or another combination of public and private domains. The allowed people can usually view these bookmarks chronologically, by category or tags, or via a search engine.
Most social bookmark services encourage users to organize their bookmarks with informal tags instead of the traditional browser-based system of folders, although some services feature categories/folders or a combination of folders and tags. They also enable viewing bookmarks associated with a chosen tag, and include information about the number of users who have bookmarked them. Some social bookmarking services also draw inferences from the relationship of tags to create clusters of tags or bookmarks.
Many social bookmarking services provide web feeds for their lists of bookmarks, including lists organized by tags. This allows subscribers to become aware of new bookmarks as they are saved, shared, and tagged by other users.
As these services have matured and grown more popular, they have added extra features such as ratings and comments on bookmarks, the ability to import and export bookmarks from browsers, emailing of bookmarks, web annotation, and groups or other social network features.[1]
Next is AddThis.com, the providers of the AddThisButton …I use and love it…I suggest you do as well.
Closely behind these is the long standing bookmarking site, del.icio.us. To tell the truth, I have not utilized del.icio.us nearly enough, and have not done any review posts of delicious. I do however have bookmarks there…Here are My Delicious Bookmarks.
The rest of this page in the SERP’s for “Social Bookmarks” includes sites like Addthis that generate social bookmark buttons or sites that will enable you to submit your site to any number of Social Bookmarking sites in a short period of time. I don’t suggest doing this…just seems a bit spammy…but hey if it rocks your boat, check em out.
This little post is intended to be the first introductory post to a series I am intending to do on reviewing various Social Bookmarking sites.
In the category of Social Bookmarking I am including sites like Digg, Stumbleupon, Mixx, Sphinn and the like. Future posts in this series will include reviews of various social bookmarking sites…probably not Digg or Stumbleupon, since I have already written about those sites already. I intend for this series to be a learning opportunity for both you and me, because usually, as I do these posts, as I write and do a bit of research, I learn about the subject. The next thing this does, is it usually serves to increase my network in those various Social bookmark sites.
My invitation to you.
Do you have a favorite Social Bookmarking site you like to use? Do a post about the site, and share the link here.
