What are Twitter Lists?

If you have not been on your Twitter account lately, you should be aware of Twitter Lists, which is the new feature that Twitter just released last week. This is the feature that allows the Twitter user to create groups.

Lists enable the user to group users according to any variable that they choose. Some Examples:

Geographic locations(Philly Bloggers)

Occupations (Web Developers)

Family(My family and friends Twitter accounts)

Work(business contacts)

Hobbies(mountain biking)

The uses are limitless.

Lists can be both public and private. You don’t need to follow someone to add them to a list. Adding profiles to a private list does not let them know that they are on the list, but adding a profile to a public allows the profile to see that they are included on a list. Twitter takes the word privacy serious.

When would I want to use a private list?

keep track of my competition.

Using Twitter for research that you may want to keep private.

Keep all your amorous profiles secret.

Keep your family profiles secret.

If you are ghost Tweeting, you can create a list of the profiles that you tweet on to have easy access to the stats.

In short, Twitter Lists are here, stop in and check them out.

Some Other Twitter List Tips:

Got an idea for a list, then create your list and then add profiles.

Check Out the Twitter Blog post announcing the Twitter List Feature.

Check out my first blog post on Twitter Lists on Socialtivity.net.

If you get added to a list, follow the list.

When you are added to a list, your Tweets will show up on the Twitter list stream.

If someone adds you to a cool list, not a list of “jerks”, then you might want to consider not only following the list, but also consider following the person.

If you go to http://twitter.com/goodies/widgets you can get widgets that allow you to show lists as well as the standard Twitter stuff.

If you would like to be added to the Pixelhead_Peeps list, leave a related comment below, and include your Twitter profile in the comment.

So what do you think of Twitter Lists?

Automatic Twitter updating whether it is adding followers automatically, adding tweets automatically, or getting followers automatically is a a growing industry. It also may very well be the downfall of Twitter if the Twitter team does not establish some sort of control over the automation of Twitter. Much like FFA(Free For All) pages of years ago,Twitter is at risk of becoming a spammers playground.

I too am guilty of using automated programs on Twitter. Recently I began experimenting with some services that enable the automation of your Twitter account. Be warned again. Be sure to give your followers some good tweets, not just automated tweets from feeds.

How to Automate Twitter

Below are some sites that I have used with varying degrees of success. Check them out and let me know what you think.

Twitterfeed.com- this enables the posting of feeds to twitter accounts. Free service. Use feeds such as : Blog feeds(yours which will automatically post an update whenever you update your blog, can also use the comments feed) Find other sites that pertain to your keywords and use their feed to update twitter.

Twollow.com- allows you to follow other twitter users based upon keywords. Free account follows up to 5 keywords..paid allows up to 20 keywords.

Tweetlater.com(affiliate link attached)– allows automated posting of tweets to include an automated welcome message to new followers. Another site I discovered teaches how to use Yahoo Pipes to Retweet. I was actually trying to do this the other day when I was on a roadtrip and wanted to use my Travel Blog Twitter account instead of my primary, but I thought it would be great if I could just feed my travel blog twitter feed to my main.

Twitter does not allow the Retweeting of other Twitter Feeds. However, the video below, which was found on this post about Retweeting Automatically, which goes through the process of making it possible to feed one of your twitter accounts the tweets from another Twitter account.

On the subject of automating Twitter, I came across a Twitter Tutorial site that has some video tutorials on the subject. I have watched most of these videos, and have tried out all of the services.

What I Have Been Twup To.

I did implement the free services on the All-Travel-Sites.com Twitter account ( @AllTravelSites ), and have managed to surpass the number of followers I have on my oldest Twitter profile ( @emperoranton ) in just about a month. If I decide to start using the premium services, the gains will even greater. (Watch out Ashton and Opera).

I alod created a Twitter profile for a Pottstown Commercial Property site, which is a friends website I created to sell his warehouse property which he had housed his printing business prior to selling it several years ago. ( @PottstownProp )

What Do You Think?

Got any other Twitter services I should check out?

What is TPO?

TPO or Twitter Profile Optimization, is a term I coined this morning at 3am. I see in the SERP’s(Search Engine Results Pages) there are sites that appear for the phrase, but I will take credit for the TPO and actually defining it.

TPO Could actually be a career much like SMO(Social Media Optimization), which it could be niche career of as well.

TPO Duties

Set up Twitter profiles for companies and individuals to include registering and tweaking the profile page.

Put Twitter widgets on website’s/blogs.

Add Twitter profile to various Twitter services to be sure of optimum Twitter performance.

Actually doing some Tweeting for the clients new Twitter profile.

Educate the client on proper Twitter use.

Establish and/or identify some key niche Twitter contact relationships, such as other web designers if client is a web designer.

Send Client updates.

Be sure client is receiving Twitter updates.

Give client positive feedback in regards to Twitter progress.

Brain storm with client on ways to connect with their potential target Twitter audience.

On going Twitter profile Tweeting and Twitter network maintenance.

TPO Fees

The TPO could operate on a one time fee, an hourly fee, a per tweet fee, a monthly retainer, or an ala carte method of payment.

It could also be just another add-on service to offer marketing customers that could make your marketing services invaluable to your customers.

Since Twitter and other Social Media sites are now mainstreamed, the ability for individuals to make a living at these services is very much a viable and quite lucrative option for entrepreneurs and other business people.

Get Paid $70,000 to Tweet

Do you think I am kidding about the idea of being paid to Tweet? I came across the Mashable post DREAM JOB: $70K to use Twitter and Facebook were a county in Oregon was advertising for a Social Media Coordinator, with a salary of $70,000/yr.

Need a TPO?

If you need a TPO or you need some advice, please feel free to drop a comment, and I will either respond or email you back, or you can check out my previous Twitter posts. Be warned, I am not touting myself as being a TPO expert…I really try not to portray myself as an expert at anything.

You experienced Twitter users…would you be willing to take on the job for $70,000?

Here are several Twitter tips for you.

Twitter tip nuggets:

Do you use the @feature to make friends?

I get tons of people who add me on Twitter, and I would gladly add them as well. However, I get so much email everyday, that when I get a notification that someone has added me, many times I won’t get back to check out the persons profile and add them. If you want me to add you, send a tweet out using @emperoranton. Make sure to say something original, insightful and/or helpful. @EmperorAnton your great, please add me is nice, but if I visit your profile and you have no updates, and are following 2000 other people, I probably will not be following you in return. If you want me to add you, try re-tweeting one of my tweets using the format “rt @EmperorAnton{copy and paste a tweet from my stream}. Use the @feature, and you will surely make lots of friends. But please don’t do it in a spammy sort of way. Sincerity and originality are appreciated greatly.

How do You Search Twitter?

Sure you can use the search feature at the top of the page by clicking the “find people” link, but that will only enable you to search for account users. You can also use the search bar on the side bar, which will give you the same results as search.twitter.com, which is the Twitter search tool I prefer to use. I like having the ability to create a search for any given phrase, and then being able to use the feed for that query for what every purpose you may want.

One last nugget not included in the video.

Check out Twittapp.com which is a great little site that has several sweet Twitter applications that will allow you to get email notifications when someone follows or un-follows you, and also when someone ats you or uses your user name with the at symbol.

How about you?

Do you have any Twitter tips to share?
